Child Travel Consent Additional Information
Some tips to help your child’s trip go smoothly
Notarize the consent letter• For international travel, it is recommended that the consent letter be notarized so that
the signature of the parent/guardian will not be called into question.
Review your airline’s child travel policy • Each airline may have their own policies on requirements for traveling minors.
Review the regulations of any foreign destinations • Some countries have stringent rules that require traveling parties provide additional
documentation to assist in preventing child abductions. Visit travel.state.gov/ or contact the embassy of the foreign country for the most accurate information.
Travel with original or a notarized true copies of any required o�cial documentation • This includes the travel consent and any other documents that may be relevant
such as custody orders or parental death certi�cates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to have the travel consent notarized?It is possible that signing before a witness instead of a notary public will be adequate. However, you should check the current policy of your airlines and/or the countries you are traveling to before taking this approach to avoid any travel di�culties.
Why are there so many requirements for traveling minors?Many countries and airlines have documentation requirements to help �ght child abduction.
What if my child’s last name is di�erent than mine?You should be prepared to prove your relationship to the child by producing government issued certi�cates (e.g. certi�cates of birth, marriage, adoption or change of name). They may be originals or notarized true copies.
Who is considered a legal parent?Anyone who is listed on the child’s birth certi�cate or who has legal guardian status.
Who needs to consent to the travel?It is recommended that any parent, legal guardian, or other authorized person or organization with custody rights, access rights, or parental authority over a child should consent to any travel, especially international travel.
