Child Of The Poor/What Child Is This
Performance NotesChild Of The Poor is a Christmas song written to be sung with What Child Is This(GREENSLEEVES). The Cantor or Choir alternates the Verses of Child Of The Poor with the Versesof What Child Is This sung by the Assembly.
This piece develops images of Christ’s birth and presence amid the poor and forgotten, both twomillennia ago and today. Jesus is revealed to us not in glory and majesty but “in the eyes of achild.”
Strong social justice themes and images from Isaiah bring this song to completion.
The accompaniment should be kept simple, letting these two songs proclaim the good news ofChrist among us. Child Of The Poor/What Child Is This would work well during an evening ofcarols, or as a prelude or communion song during the Christmas season.
—S.S.
