GOOD APPERANCE & ATTITUDE The opinion formed by the skiing and snowboarding public about their experience at Chicopee Ski Club is, more often than not, based on the impressions made by the lift attendants/operators. The attention, consideration, politeness and friendliness paid to our guests make all the difference. Not only the actions of the lift staff enter into their opinions, but also the appearances of the staff. It is common sense that when the public is handled by a clean cut neatly dressed employees that are carrying themselves with confidence, a good attitude and a pleasant personality that they are going to be more satisfied that when addressed by a dirty, smelly and unhappy lift operator.
LIFT ATTENDANT (ASSIGNED TO LIFT)
Take a broom and shovel to the lift.
Test all stop switches, safety gates and intercoms.
Clean off chairs.
Take off shutters.
Shovel loading and unloading areas
Clean off all signage
This should be completed before the lift opens to the public. Do not load
anyone until the top operator has confirmed they are ready to receive passengers and your supervisor has authorized loading to begin.
While operating the lift you should be listening to strange noises and looking
for cable alignment on the truck assembly, hanging passengers, lowered safety bars, and general horseplay.

LIFT PASSENGER SAFETY
Skiing and snowboard as you all know is a fun, exciting and sometimes an
exhausting sport. For the most part the general public is more focused on their next run down the hill then they are about loading and unloading a lift properly. Whether or not it is because they are not paying attention or they are just tired, people seem to be having more trouble on ski lifts across the country.
Chicopee and you, the operator, are being proactive in reducing and hopefully
eliminating lift problems and injuries by adding additional measure to ensure the safety of all lift passengers. As mandated by the T.S.S.A. the lift unloading signage has changed and their Look, lower, load program has been instituted across Canada.
Preceding this, we have been identifying small children or those who could
have potential problems loading and unloading our lift and pairing them up with other adult passenger and/or staff. The majority of lift related incidents involve small children and beginners. As a lift operator it is your job to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride up the hill for all passengers by doing the following:
1. Ensure that all lifts signs are 100% visible and legible. 2. Ensure that loading and unloading ramps are smooth, level and at the proper
height throughout the day. Make sure that the snow you throw on the ramps are level before the next chair is ready to load/unload.
3. Ensure that every chair is clean and free from snow, ice, or other slippery
substances. 4. Be aware of who is waiting to load the lift:
• Small children and beginners will need help loading. • Passengers will need to be paired up with an adult or an experienced rider
to ensure their safety on the lift. If there is no one to ride the lift with these passengers, employees such as Snow School, Public Relations and the Ski Patrol can be called to assist. If you feel a passenger is not able to safely ride the lift, do not allow them to load until they can be properly assisted.
• When loading children ensure that the passenger that might need a lift onto the chair are positioned on the lift attendant’s side of the chair.
This section is very important as small children or passengers have the highest risk of falling off/out of a ski lift or having a loading / unloading
incident.
Issued on: Nov. 25, 2012 Lift Operators Manual Revised: Nov. 19, 12 Page 16
5. Once a chair has been loaded, look up the line to the next chair and make
sure the passengers have lowered their safety bar. Passengers not lowering their safety bars are to receive one verbal warning from lift operators. Any following infractions must be reported to your supervisor. Passengers that repeatedly do not follow safe lift procedures will have their pass removed by a Supervisor, as their safety on the lift is our responsibility.
6. It is very important that passengers do not have any loose articles of clothing
such as scarves, bandanas, draw-strings, etc. that could become entangled or caught on a chair. The same goes for oversized/bulky clothing, pillows under snowpants, or any other object that would cause loading/unloading problems.
7. Backpacks and other portable items are not allowed up the lifts. These items
could be dropped or get in the way of the safety bar or become caught in the chair. Ski poles or objects that can fit into a pocket are the only objects allowed up the lift by the general public.
8. Do not send dropped or forgotten objects, (poles/skis) up the lift with small
children or beginners, only do so with staff, adults or advanced riders. 9. Notify a Lift Supervisor if any passengers are bouncing, swinging or jumping
off a chair. If some one is bouncing the lift, stop the lift immediately and wait 10 seconds before restarting the lift so that the line will settle. These actions could potentially cause a de-ropement where the cable comes off the sheave wheels and/or the tower. There are NO SECOND CHANCES.
10. All unloading stations are equipped with intercoms to communicate safety
issues to the public. They are to be used when passengers, • are raising their safety bar too early or too late. • are not paying attention or horsing around. • need to clear the unloading area. • need a verbal warning to move, duck or avoid a chair or passenger.
Remember that your stop button is the best way to avoid lift incidents!
11. No one aside from Operations staff are allowed to down-load a lift, (Only one
person per chair). For passengers that need assistance down the hill, call a Lift Supervisor for special arrangements.

The Five “L’s” and an “S”
Look, Load, and Lower. Lift, Stand, and Leave When getting on a lift, Look:
• Look out for small children. Have at least one adult ride with them. • Look for instructional signs before you prepare to load. • Look and wait for your turn to load. • Look over your shoulder for the approaching chair. • Secure loose hair and clothes; remember that backpacks are not
allowed on the lifts. Load:
• Bend your knees to prepare for the chair. • If riding alone, sit in the middle of the chair. • Hold poles in one hand and remove safety straps.
Lower: • Lower the safety bar as soon as your skis or snowboard leaves the
snow. • Watch for the sign to raise the safety bar. • Keep a close eye on small children who can easily slip out of the lift. • Raise the safety bar only when preparing to unload. • Remain seated. Do not bounce or swing the chair or your hill privilages
will be revoked. • Single riders sit in the middle of the chair.
When getting off the lift, Lift:
• Watch for the sign to raise the safety bar. • Raise the tips of your skis or snowboard when approaching the
unloading ramp. Stand:
• Raise the safety bar only when preparing to unload. • Listen to and obey the lift operators instructions at all times.

Ski and Snowboard Helmet Policy Since the implementation of our Helmet Integration Policy Chicopee has been at the forefront of our industry trying to lead-by-example not only to other ski areas but to the general public as well. Helmets are mandatory and part of Chicopee’s Uniform for all employees, volunteers and visitors who ski or snowboard as part of the duties they are performing. This includes the on-hill employees in Snow School, Racing, Public Relations, Operations, Ski Patrol and any other employee who, as a requirement of their job must ski or snowboard. In addition helmets are now mandatory for use of Chicopee’s Karbon Terrain Park. The Following details of this policy are now in effect:
1. With no current CSA standard for skiing or snowboarding helmets, a helmet specially manufactured for the purposes of skiing or snowboarding must be properly worn by all employees and volunteers when on duty and on their equipment on site. This includes any shift, training, or exercise.
2. While in uniform staff helmets must be a neutral/normal color, (black, blue,
silver, white, etc.) extreme patterns such as camouflage are not acceptable.
3. All staff will be required to wear a helmet while using the hill recreationally, as a condition of their season pass.
4. This policy extends to time spent at other ski areas. If representing or
working for Chicopee and/or in uniform at another ski area, a helmet is required.
5. All visiting Ski Patrol, Guest Trainers/Instructors, Vendors and Contractors
must comply with this policy.
6. If an employee reports for a shift without a properly fitted, certified helmet they will not be permitted on-hill until a helmet is either rented or obtained for their use.
7. Any violations of this policy will result is disciplinary action or termination of
employment.
8. Helmets are mandatory for all participants in any event utilizing a run on Chicopee’s property. (I.e. bordercross, members races, etc.)
Recognizing that helmets can help reduce the risk of serious head injury, they work best in conjunction with appropriate skiing and snowboarding behaviour. The use of helmets is strongly advocated to all general public, equipment renters and especially school groups. Chicopee has a minimum of 500 helmets of various sizes available to rent as well as an onsite retail store where helmets can be purchased.
