Many thanks to Meg Hennessey, Marie Kaiser and Laura Kiedaisch for all their planning and hard work on our 2013 Pedigree book. At our May meeting, we continued our discussion on holding and Obedience Trial and we have decided to go forward with an Obedience Trial in January 2014. Dates and more info will be coming at our July meeting and in future Spot News. The Chicagoland Dalmatian Club extends condolences to Laura Lightholder and family on the death of her mother Germaine ‘Geri’ Lightholder. Geri along with her late husband Joe, joined Chicagoland in 1973 and Geri was a very active member throughout her 40 years of membership. Geri will be remembered fondly and missed by all those that knew her from our Club and from her greater Dalmatian family. Our

thoughts and prayers are with her daughter, Laura and the rest of the Lightholder family.

Our next meeting will be on Saturday, July 13 and we feature our Annual Ice Cream Social. The Club will provide the Ice Cream, and we ask that you bring your favorite topping, syrup or special ingredient to share with all. It’s a fun way to beat the heat of the summer. Mark your calendars and plan on attending. Regards, Tom Kaiser

• Gail Meyers Social Committee Report: Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to Diana and Bob Skibinski on the loss of Diana’s mother.

• From Kris Benoit: It is with a heavy heart I share with the Dalmatian community the passing of Geri Lightholder. Geri, Joe and Laura have been close friends since John and I arrived on the Dal scene more than 25 years ago. They bred and exhibited Dalmatians under the Chaucer prefix since the 70s and Geri was the Breeder Contact person for Chicagoland and DCA for many many years. I'm sure many remember her at the DCA National Trophy table. She always had time for every new comer and old timer alike. She will be sorely missed by many. A wake will be held at the McKenzie Funeral Home, 15618 S. Cicero Ave. Oak Forest, IL 60452 (708) 687-2990. Monday, May 20th 3-9, and service to be held starting at 9:00 AM on Tuesday, May 21st.

CHICAGOLAND DALMATIAN CLUB

May 11, 2013 The regular meeting of the club was opened at 7:05 p.m. by the vice-president, Meg Hennessey. Tom Kaiser, the president, was unable to be present. There were fifteen members in attendance. A quorum was present. There was also a guest attending: Matt Wineland’s mother. Because there had not been a quorum present at the March meeting, the January minutes had not been approved. It was moved and seconded that the minutes of that meeting be approved as printed in the SpotNews; the motion carried. There were no March minutes due to the lack of a quorum. The treasurer, Mike Hennessey, presented his report, indicating that for the first four months of the year income exceeded expenses. This was due primarily to the receipt of dues, trophy donations and “early bird” pedigree book entries. During the period, our annual DCA trophy donation was sent. The report will be filed for audit. The treasurer and Ray Plaza will make arrangements for the audit, as required by club rules. Reports of Committees Fun Match

: Marie Kaiser, the chair, reported that the match, to be held on Saturday, September 14, would be conformation only. Diane Benz and Terry Benz will judge. As we have done before, the club will provide sandwiches and participants will be asked to bring sides and desserts for the supper. We have needed ribbons on hand. Meg Hennessey will file the application.

Ways and Means

: Marie Kaiser reported that the annual ice cream social would be held at the July meeting. The club will supply the ice cream and members are asked to bring toppings and treats.

Pedigree Book

: Marie Kaiser reported that “early bird” entries for the 2013 book have closed. She, Meg Hennessey and Laura Keidaisch will continue to meet to complete the book.

Plaques

: Meg Hennessey reported that only a few plaques have not been distributed; they will be mailed to the recipients.

Website

: Meg Hennessey indicated that the website will be updated.

DCA

: The basket of Chicago/Illinois items contributed by our club brought $115.

2013 Specialty

: Tom Kaiser, chair, sent a report. We have AKC approval for the show, to be held on Friday, June 7, 2013 and Saturday, June 8, 2013 at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton. On Friday, Cynthia Pagurski will judge sweepstakes and Norman Patton will judge conformation; Saturday judges will be Kathy Aycock for sweepstakes and Cheryl Steinmetz for conformation.

Roy Jones is the show superintendent. The premium has been mailed and is also available on the website.

There will be a potluck on Friday evening, with sandwiches, drinks, chips being supplied by CDC and participants encouraged to bring sides and desserts to share. On Saturday, there will be no food provided; water will be provided. Trophy donations have been requested, and many members have contributed. Gas cards will be given for major prizes on both days and pictures given for Best of Winners and Best of Breed; water bottles will be given for class prizes. There will be a 50/50 raffle each day and a raffle of Chicago/Illinois products donated by CDC. There was discussion of the need for storage space for items that the club wishes to have in a single location or leave overnight. We can reserve booth space at the show, perhaps sharing with another group.

It was moved by Gail Meyers and seconded that CDC rent booth space with the Cavalier Club, sharing the cost. Motion carried.

Fees this year will match those of the Wheaton Kennel Club. It was pointed out, however, that fees for 2014 will need to be increased because of increases in the fees charged by Roy Jones. Social

It was moved by Diana Skibinski and seconded that CDC make its usual donation for the death of a member, designating the contribution toward a headstone for Helen Siegel. The motion carried.

: Gail Meyers reported that long-time CDC member Helen Siegel died; a request had been made for donations for a headstone for Helen.

A thank you was received from Irene Jinks for the “Edible Arrangement” of delicious fruit that she received following her hip replacement surgery. Unfinished Business Obedience Trial

It was moved by Mike Hennessey and seconded that CDC hold a rally/obedience trial in January, 2014. The motion carried.

: Discussion continued on holding an obedience trial and, possibly, an all-breed conformation match in January. We could do this at For Your K9, where we would rent the building and be in charge of the event. There could be separate rally trials, not tied to obedience. The big question is whether the club wishes to do this and, if so, whether we can supply the necessary number of workers for the trial. Dates suggested were January 18-19, 2014. We would need twelve stewards and extra workers for hospitality, trophies, etc.

It was moved by Mike Hennessey and seconded that this be a two-day event. The motion carried.

It was decided by consensus that there would be a 50/50 raffle each day. Marie Kaiser has tentatively agreed to be show secretary for the event. Meg Hennessey will secure judges, making an attempt to get some new people There being no further business to come before the group, the meeting adjourned at 7:52 p.m. Irene Jinks Secretary

Barn Hunt Is Coming to a Place Near You!

By Brenda Coffield

The exciting new dog sport of Barn Hunt is spreading across the country like wildfire, and our dogs are burning with excitement about another way "to get the rats!" While the sport is for all dogs, our go-to-ground terriers are naturals. Most of us have been going to informal barn hunts for years at dog club events, but Barn Hunt Association founder Robin Nuttall has taken it to a whole new level by developing rules, a sanctioning organization, and a title structure. Her brainchild, Barn Hunt Association LLC, http://barnhunt.com, is an independent organization, but the American Kennel Club has agreed to recognize its titles. Interested event organizers have been holding Fun Tests this past year to flesh out rules and enable organizers to learn the ropes, while affording dogs, handlers, and judges the opportunity to hone their skills. Robin has held Training Clinics and Judges' Seminars throughout the country and at her home base, the Columbia Canine Sports Center in Columbia, MO. Barn Hunt kicks into high gear at the first BHA sanctioned trial in Columbia, MO on April 13-14 where the first titles in the sport are likely to be awarded. In July 2012 I discovered the Barn Hunt Yahoo group, connecting barn hunt enthusiasts as the sport was born. Now almost 400 members strong, the group serves as a clearinghouse for questions and rule interpretations with active oversight and guidance by Robin. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/barnhunt/ The following October Judy and I packed our four border terriers in the car and headed to Columbia, MO for our first experience with a BHA-style Barn Hunt Training Clinic, Judges' Seminar, and Fun Test. We were hooked. The dogs needed NO encouragement to join the fun. The dogs practiced indicating the rat tube with the live rat and distinguishing it from empty tubes and tubes with rat bedding, a critical skill for the successful hunt. In addition to indicating the correct rat tube (or tubes depending on the level), dogs must climb and tunnel, all within the allotted time and at the appropriate skill level for their class, to complete the requisite "elements." Dogs are divided into three height groups: small for 13 inches & under, medium for 13.1-18 inches, and large for over 18 inches.

The people learned and lived the rules, handled their dogs, built courses, and acquired judging and event organizing skills. Course building took place in an enclosed 20' x 20' area, using 25-50 straw bales, boards, and cement blocks.

The rules, http://barnhunt.com/rules/, evolved over the past months, and are now set for the first year of competition. Official titles will be awarded if dogs successfully complete the following requirements at each level:

As word of the new sport percolated throughout the dog world, enthusiasts connected and made plans to bring Barn Hunt to their area and their dogs. From a small organizational meeting at Bublitz's Restaurant in Lomira, WI on March 30, plans for

the first BHA sanctioned Wisconsin Barn Hunt were hatched. To support the effort, the Facebook open group "Great Lakes Barn Hunt" was posted, Great Lakes Barn Hunt LLC

was formed, and the website http://greatlakesbh.com was published, but still under construction. The official announcement for the first Wisconsin Barn Hunt will be made through BHA and in these venues. The premium will be posted to greatlakesbh.com.

Judy and I undertook the task of making the rat tubes and procuring the other equipment and supplies necessary to host an event. We both acquired symptoms of a new condition known as "Rat Tube Elbow."

Our group of Wisconsin event organizers decided to hold the first sanctioned trials at Hawkhill Farm in Union Grove, Wisconsin, and we have identified two other sites for future Barn Hunts. If all goes well, the first event will be held on June 8-9, two trials each day, holding out the possibility of a title from a successful weekend. Stay tuned for the official announcement.
