Tearing Down Walls & Building New Ones
By Rabbi Dr. Jerry Lob
Yom Kippur is in the air. Just a little moretime before we hear that haunting melody ofKol Nidrei, a prayer that involves theannulment of vows, ushering in this holiest ofdays. I once heard from a beloved teacher, that we begin Yom Kippur this way, expressing our understanding of the power ofwords because of the integral role prayer playson this day. We will spend a good part of thenext 25 hours using prayer to ask G-d forforgiveness, together with all the otherrequests we make of Him, regarding ourhopes and dreams for ourselves and lovedones in the coming year. To pour out ourheart to Hashem, we first need toacknowledge, by declaring Kol Nidrei, werecognize that we were not always carefulenough with our speech, in fact, we oftenmisused the power of words. Words matter,a vow creates reality, it has substance, andHalachic ramifications. The words we useaffect others in profound ways. For example,in the way we talk to our children: “It’s sogood to see you.” “I’ve missed you.” “I loveyou.” “We’re so proud of you.” Words whichgently build a child’s budding confidence, words that nourish her soul, conveying thesentiments that she’s understood, accepted, and loved. Yes, words have power. They can create and
build. But they can also devastate and
damage. Words that cut, slicing through afragile soul, such as: “You’re so lazy.” “You’llnever amount to anything.” “All you give meis aggravation.” When said by a parent theseare words which can haunt a personthroughout his life. Our words can build walls, walls that separate
us from the people we care about, thatseparate us from others in our community, and can even separate us from Hashem. InJewish thought we are told that this happensevery time one sins. Each sin forms a brickin a wall, so to speak, a barrier, which dividesus from each other, from Hashem, and fromour very selves. And yet, just as our actions and words build
words, they can also break them down. Theforce of a sincere apology, the dynamic ofgenuine repentance, can make the barriers dis-integrate. Regarding our relationship withothers, this does not necessarily occur rightaway, but over time, with the right words andattitude, demonstrating real regret, it usuallywill happen. “I’m really sorry, what I said toyou is not true. I feel terrible about it,” goesa long way to repairing a relationship. “Pleaseforgive me, I was wrong,” are words that arecapable of initiating the healing process.Regarding our relationship with Hashem, ourTorah promises that T’shuva breaks throughall barriers.
[email protected] CJA 17
In June of 1987 President Reagan challengedPresident Gorbachev at Brandenburg Gate atthe Berlin Wall. This wall separated EastBerlin from West Berlin, communism fromdemocracy and the wall was the symbol of theCold War that existed then between the SovietUnion and the democratic world. Mr. Reaganturned to Mr. Gorbachev, gestured to the wall, and shouted what would be recorded inhistory as the words that officially ended theCold War: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down thiswall.” I have this imagery in my head. Hashem
stands right beside us in the days leading upto Yom Kippur, and especially on YomKippur itself, and whispers to each of us:“Tear down this wall, the wall that separatesus and gets in the way of our closeness.”Hashem asks us to come home, feel theredemption of T’shuva, and jump into Hisarms, the arms of a loving father who wantsnothing more than to hold us and comfort us.
So, Yom Kippur is a time of using words toreduce pain, to bring healing, to reconnectwith all those from whom we’ve growndistant, family, friends, community, the Jewishpeople, and Hashem. Piercing the barriers, tearing down walls. And then, we spend thenext four days building new walls, not walls ofdivision but rather walls of connection. Thewalls of a Succah, walls that don’t separate andisolate, but rather the opposite, walls thatframe a family, make a home, in which we sitwith our families, friends, and community. Wesit there too, with our nation, the entire nationof Israel, past, present, and future, and mostimportantly, we sit in the Succah feeling theembrace of the Presence of Hashem’sShechinah.Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in private practice inChicago, working with adults, adolescents, and fam-ilies, for many years. He lectures and writes extensivelyon topics relating to psychology, relationships, parent-ing, education, and Jewish thought.

SHEMITTAH WINE
Q. Someone in my shul told me that they were inthe kosher aisle of a store and saw a 2008 Caber-net Sauvignon, which is a wine from the shemittahyear. He asked me (a) how shemittah producecould be shipped out of Eretz Yisroel, and (b)whether he could drink the wine if he was sure to notspill or waste any of it.
A. During shemittah there are foods which aredistributed using the Otzar Beis Din system where –basically – a Beis Din represents all of the consumersby collecting the produce from the hefker fields, bringing it to the cities where people live, and givingit out for “free”. The Beis Din is allowed to chargefor their services (delivery, packaging etc.) and theyusually hire the farmer to do that work so he canmake a few dollars during shemittah. Assuming theOtzar Beis Din is done correctly, that is a goodsystem. [For sources and more details on shemittah, see the articles in Sappirim 1, 2, 4 & 8 atwww.sappirim.com.]
Food from the Otzar Beis Din still has kedushasshevi’is such that it cannot be wasted, bought andsold, taken out of Eretz Yisroel, etc. The question iswhat the status of that food is when the time of biurarrives. Usually, as soon as there is no more of agiven fruit (e.g. oranges, apples) in the fields, peoplemust take all of that fruit that they have left in theirhouse and make it available for everyone else. [Theycan also partake in this fruit, if they take a smallamount at a time.] That whole process is called“biur”. Many hold that anything which is part of theOtzar Beis Din “system” does not require a formalbiur because it is already setup in the most efficientmanner for distribution to everyone. That wouldjustify the fact that the wine made with Otzar BeisDin does not have a formal biur.
Is there kedushas shevi’is after biur? There arestrong sources to indicate that after biur the fruit nolonger has any kedushas shevi’is, and those who
certify the wine that the person in your shul saw areaccepting this opinion. Accordingly, once the time ofbiur passes they hold that the wine may be exportedfrom Eretz Yisroel, it can be bought-and-sold, andthe people who buy it do not have to be careful tonot waste it. Others assume that kedushas shevi’isremains even after the time of biur, and therefore allof the above would be forbidden.
In different locations, Chazon Ish presentsdifferent rulings on this matter, but it is noteworthythat wherever Chazon Ish wrote “instructions” forstandard consumers (as opposed to intricate halachicdiscourses) he wrote that one should be machmir onthis question. Accordingly, most hashgochos do notrecommend the sale and use of such wine in chutzla’aretz, and for that reason the wines in question arenot sold at Hungarian or other cRc certified stores.
