Burnett (15-5, 3.63) CENTRAL CASTING: The Chicago Cubs have arrived in Pittsburgh for their third and final series of the season in the Steel City … this three-game set represents the middle stop of Chicago’s 10- day, 10-game, three-city trip that started in Washington (0-4) and ends with three games in Houston starting on Monday. Starting tonight, the Cubs play their next 16 games and 19 of their final 25 contests against National League Central opponents … the club’s lone stretch outside of the division is a six- game, two-city trip through Colorado (September 25-27) and Arizona (September 26-28). The Cubs have dropped their last six games after winning four of eight from August 24-31. SECOND TO NONE: Darwin Barney has gone an N.L. single-season record 122-straight games without an error at second base, surpassing David Eckstein’s mark of 113-consecutive games set with San Diego in 2010 … he is one game shy of equaling Ryne Sandberg’s overall N.L. record 123-game errorless streak – allowing for multiple seasons – that ran from June 21, 1989 through May 17, 1990 … thanks to Ed Hartig. The major league record single-season errorless streak by a second baseman is held by Placido Polanco, who went 141 games without a miscue in 2007 for the Tigers (see chart below on far right … thanks to the Elias Sports Bureau). Barney’s 122-game errorless streak at second base spans 982.1 innings since his only 2012 miscue at second base, April 17 in Miami. 500 CLUB: Starlin Castro is poised to soon gain membership in a very exclusive club as he enters tonight’s game two hits shy of 500 career major league hits at the age of 22 … only 27 players in major league history have reached their 500th career hit before turning 23-years-old, with the only active player being New York’s Alex Rodriguez … Castro turns 23 next March. This elite group of 27 players includes the likes of Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Al Kaline, Mickey Mantle, Jimmie Foxx, Robin Yount, Ty Cobb, Bobby Doerr, Johnny Bench, Orlando Cepeda and Ken Griffey, Jr. among others (thanks to Ed Hartig for his research assistance). WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY?: The Cubs are 4-10 in their last 14 games after managing only a total of four wins in their first 22 games after the trade deadline (July 31-August 22) … prior to the trade deadline, the Cubs went 19-10 in 29 games from June 25-July 30. The Cubs tonight play their 15th game of a stretch that sees the club play 20 games in a row from August 23-September 12 without a day off … the club follows this stretch with a 10-day, 10-game homestand starting September 14.
