GIANTS VS. BEARS AUGUST 22, 2011

11 FAST FACTS

BEARS CONNECTIONS Bears general manager Jerry Angelo was a regional scout for the Giants from 1982-1986. GIANTS CONNECTIONS Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell was a secondary coach for the Bears in 2005. Offensive line coach Pat Flaherty was Chicago’s tight ends coach from 2001-2003. GIANTS NOTABLES VS. BEARS Dec. 2, 2007 (Giants 21-16, Solder Field): Defensive end Justin Tuck had three tackles, 1.5 sacks for a loss of seven yards, and two quarterback hits. Nov. 12, 2006 (Bears 38-20, Giants Stadium): Running back Brandon Jacobs scored two touchdowns on one-yard (9:55 in first quarter) and eight-yard (3:26 left in the third) rushes. Then-rookie defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka intercepted a pass and returned it for 28 yards. Linebacker Gerris Wilkinson had eight tackles (five solo). Nov. 7, 2004 (Bears 28-21, Giants Stadium): Defensive end Osi Umenyiora had three solo tackles, one sack for 9 yards, and a fumble recovery for 15 yards. NEW FACE The New York Giants welcome a new coach in the 2011 season. After a legendary 14-year career that included both three Super Bowl championships and three Pro Bowls, Larry Izzo, 36, will assist Giants special teams coordinator Tom Quinn. He replaces Thomas McGaughey, who left the Giants this spring to become the special teams coordinator at LSU. PROTECTION IS KEY Eli Manning was not sacked in seven games in the 2010 season. The Giants allowed only 16 sacks all season, including four in the last nine games. That shattered the previous team record in a 16-game schedule, which was 24 in 2002.

ELI DOES IT AGAIN Eli Manning finished the 2010 season with 4,002 passing yards to become the first Giants quarterback with two 4,000-yard seasons. He threw for 4,021 yards in 2009. Kerry Collins (4,073 in 2002) and Phil Simms (4,044 in 1984) are the only other Giants to pass for more than 4,000 yards. DYNAMIC DUO Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck tied for the team lead with 11.5 sacks apiece in 2010, the first time the Giants had two players with at least that many sacks since 2005, when Umenyiora had 14.5 and Michael Strahan finished with 11.5. Umenyiora also led the league with 10 forced fumbles, tying Jason Taylor’s record set in 2006 with Miami. The stat has been kept since 1994.

Head Coaches Tom Coughlin NFL Record: 140-113 (Overall) NFL Head Coach: 15th College: Syracuse

HEAD COACH COMPARISON Tom Coughlin Lovie Smith140-113 Overall Record 66-52 2-2 Career Head-to-Head 2-2 8 Years as Team’s Head Coach 8 15 Years as NFL Head Coach 8 3-4 Coughlin vs. Chicago Smith vs. New York Giants 2-2

Lovie Smith NFL Record: 63-49 (66-52 Overall) NFL Head Coach: 8th year College: Tulsa

Long regarded as one of the NFL’s premier head coaches, Tom Coughlin is one of the most successful in the 86-year history of the Giants. He reached the pinnacle of his profession during the 2007 season when he led the Giants to victory in Super Bowl XLII. The Giants, big underdogs entering the game, scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to defeat the previously undefeated New England Patriots 17-14. Last year, the Giants were 10-6, following marks of 8-8, 12-4, 10-6, 8-8, and 11-5 the previous five seasons. Their six-year streak without a losing record is the Giants’ longest since they had 10 in a row from 1954-63. In 2008, Coughlin led the Giants to the NFC East championship and their twelve victories were their highest total since the 2000 NFC champions won 12 games. The division title was the Giants’ seventh since the 1970 merger. It was the eighth time in franchise history and the sixth time since the 1970 merger that the giants finished a season with at least twelve victories. The Giants advanced to postseason play for the fourth consecutive season, the first time they accomplished that feat in their history. Coughlin also led the Jacksonville Jaguars to four consecutive postseason berths (1996-99) and is one of only three coaches in NFL history to accomplish that feat with two different teams. Under Coughlin, the Giants routinely establish franchise statistical milestones. In 2009, the Giants scored 402 points after scoring 425 in 2008. It is the first time in franchise history that the Giants scored at least 400 points in consecutive seasons. From Sept 20 to Oct 4 in 2009, the Giants won consecutive road games in Dallas, Tampa Bay, and Kansas City. They were just the eighth team of the 108 that have played at least three consecutive road games since 1990 to win every game.

Smith set forth with three stated goals when he was hired as the 13th head coach in Chicago Bears history on January 15, 2004: end the decade of dominance by the Green Bay Packers over the Bears, capture the NFC North Division for Chicago and win the Super Bowl.

Lovie Smith enters his seventh season as the head coach of the Chicago Bears with a regular season coaching record of 63-49 (.777) and is 66-52 overall including the playoffs, one of just 10 current head coaches to reach the 50-win plateau. Smith reached that mark in 88 overall contests, faster than Wade Phillips (92), Jack Del Rio (92), Jeff Fisher (93), Marvin Lewis (102), Bill Belichick (111) and Norv Turner (111). John Fox also did it in 88 games, while Andy Reid (81) and Tom Coughlin (83) got there quicker. Smith has also reached the 50-win milestone in fewer games than legendary NFL coaches Bill Parcells (89), Bill Walsh (91), Chuck Noll (94) and Tom Landry (119).

Smith's 66 wins are third most in franchise history, trailing only Hall of Famers George Halas and Mike Ditka. Included in those 66 wins is an NFC Championship giving the Bears their first Super Bowl appearance in 21 years (2006).

Smith, the 2005 NFL Coach of the Year, has successfully laid Chicago's foundation for success in six seasons on the job by establishing his cornerstone of aggressive defensive play.

THE LAST GAME: PANTHERS 20, GIANTS 10

AUGUST 13, 2011

By Michael Eisen

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Giants’ performance in the opening preseason game elicited a midseason reaction from Tom Coughlin.The head coach didn’t care that he’d conducted only 11 practices since the end of last season, his starters played about a quarter and much of the second half featured players who likely won’t be wearing a Giants uniform a month from now. No, for Coughlin the evening’s salient truth was a 20‐10 defeat to the Carolina Panthers in Bank of America Stadium. Meaningless preseason game? Not to Coughlin.

“It’s a disappointing loss,” Coughlin said. “Anytime you lose it’s disappointing … we would have liked to have seen everybody play better, but it didn’t happen.” Although the players said it was great to play a game after the long, locked‐out offseason, they seemed to lack a spark for much of the evening. The Giants did not score an offensive touchdown, gave up critical big plays on defense and missed three field goal attempts (one a 56‐yarder and the last a 44‐yard try that was blocked and left Lawrence Tynes with a thigh contusion).

“We just didn’t have a lot of energy out there,” said

Ahmad Bradshaw, who rushed for 21 yards on five carries. “I can see where (Coughlin) is coming from. Then again, it is the first game.”     “He just wants to get the best out of us,” cornerback Corey Webster said. “We could have been a little more crisp, could have paid a little more attention to detail. This week, we have to watch the tape, learn from it and get better.”

The Giants’ lone touchdown was scored by linebacker Michael Boley, who returned an interception 56 yards for a touchdown on the game’s first series. The irony is that the Giants led the NFL with 39 takeaways in 2010, but were one of just four teams not to score a defensive touchdown. Tynes’ 37‐yard field goal late in the second quarter was the only other score for the Giants, who were shutout in the second half.

Carolina scored on a pair of touchdown passes – an 18‐yarder from Jimmy Clausen to Greg Olsen in the first quarter and a 35‐yarder from Derek Anderson to Kealoha Pilares in the fourth – and two Olindo Mare field goals. Including Boley’s touchdown, the starting defense played four series in the first quarter and surrendered 90 yards, four first downs and a touchdown on an 18‐yard pass from Clausen to Olsen. The first unit prevented Carolina from converting any of its four third down opportunities in the quarter. The Eli Manning‐led starting offense played the first five series for a total of 18 plays. The unit gained 79 yards, but its possessions ended with Tynes’ slightly short 56‐yard try and four punts.

“We didn't get off to a great start,” said Manning, who completed four of nine passes for 36 yards. “We didn't make any critical mistakes, didn't turn the ball over, so those are positives. But we were never able to get into a great rhythm. We missed a few opportunities and made a couple mental mistakes. Those are the things that kept us from keeping drives alive.”

The Giants do have plenty of positives to take into their next week of practice (they don’t play again until Aug. 22 at home against Chicago). Jason Pierre‐Paul had two sacks. Domenik Hixon, in his first game action since the end of the 2009 season, had team‐high totals of four receptions for 49 yards. Backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels completed 13 of 19 passes, including three for 23 yards to Devin Thomas. Punters Matt Dodge and Steve Weatherford had combined averages of 48.1 yards (gross) and 39.4 yards (net).

The Giants started well. On the fourth play from scrimmage, Boley, the weakside linebacker, picked off a Clausen pass intended for DeAngelo Williams and was well ahead of the field on his entire 56‐yard sprint to the end zone. The Giants led, 7‐0, just 2:03 into the game and before their offense had taken a snap.

“I really just dropped into zone coverage,” Boley said. “I saw the whole thing. The quarterback really zoned in on the running back. The ball was thrown and the running back hadn't turned around yet. He threw it in my zone, he really threw it right to me. It was a great way to start the preseason for the defense by putting some points on the board.”

But instead of using Boley’s big play to generate momentum, the Giants fizzled. They did force the Panthers to go three‐and‐out on the ensuing possession – thanks in part to Pierre‐Paul’s nine‐yard sack on third down – but their first offensive series ended when Tynes’ long field attempt fell short.

The Panthers needed only three plays and 58 seconds to travel 54 yards. Clausen connected with Williams for 16 yards, Williams ran for 20 up the middle and Olsen scored when he caught the ball in the end zone despite safety Tyler Sash being in very close proximity. That evened the score at 7‐7 with 7:42 remaining in the first quarter. The Giants never held the ball for more than four plays on any of their next four series.

“We had the interception for the score,” Coughlin said. “It’s the same old thing – you can make something very good happen for our team by scoring again right there and we didn’t do it. It’s disappointing.”

“We got a big interception return from Boley and that should have gotten us going in all three phases of the game,” Bradshaw said. “We just didn’t put it together. It was a very enthusiastic play and it should have had everybody ready to go after that. It just didn’t happen.”

Two field goals by Mare and one by Tynes left the Giants with a 13‐10 halftime deficit. The only score in the second half was Anderson’s touchdown pass to Pilares with

Page 21: Chicago Bears (1-0) vs. New York Giants (0-1)prod.static.giants.clubs.nfl.com/assets/images/Game... · 2011-08-22 · historical information, video highlights, statistics and rosters,

7:15 remaining in the game, a time when third‐stringers from both sides were on the field.

A more significant play might have occurred four minutes earlier, when Tynes’ 44‐yard try to tie the game was blocked by Sean Ware, whose helmet then collided with the kicker’s leg.

“Hopefully, Lawrence will be – they say it’s a thigh contusion and I’m hoping that’s basically what it is,” Coughlin

said. “Hopefully he gets over that as fast as he possibly can and gets back out there.”

In the meantime, the Giants have both the room and

the time to get better. “We’ll improve from this,” Coughlin said. “We’ll definitely improve from this. There are some people who are upset with the way they played and how it looks once they look at the tape. There’s a lot of pride in that room.” They can put it to good use beginning Monday at practice.

AUGUST 13, 2011 – PANTHERS 20, GIANTS 10NOTES, ANECDOTES, AND STATISTICS

By Michael Eisen   CHARLOTTE, N.C. – So this is what the Giants saw in Jason Pierre‐Paul when they drafted the defensive end from South Florida on the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft.   It’s safe to say Jimmy Clausen wishes the Giants had made a different choice. The Carolina quarterback was sacked twice by Pierre‐Paul in the first quarter of the Panthers’ 20‐10 victory over the Giants in a preseason game Saturday night in Bank of America Stadium. Pierre‐Paul, who started at right end, had four tackles (three solo) in his short stint on the field.   “I thought I played pretty good,” Pierre‐Paul said. “I knew what I was supposed to do and I was just out there executing. I came out, and I wasn't nervous. I knew the play calls, and I caught on very well. I just felt good. It felt very good. I knew what I was doing. (The first real contact) felt real good. Just to see where our conditioning was. Probably need to work on a little more running.”   Pierre‐Paul’s performance certainly was one of the few positives Coach Tom Coughlin found in his initial evaluation of the game.   “Jason did a heck of a job,” Coughlin said. “He was very physical. He had the two sacks and just missed on another one. (He) was a penetrator, he was a force. He really enjoyed playing and I thought he gave us a real spark.”   As a rookie, Pierre‐Paul played in all 16 games as a reserve and on special teams and finished the season with 4.5 sacks, the most by a Giants rookie since Cornelius Griffin had 5.0 in 2000. He had two sacks vs. Jacksonville on Nov. 28 and two against Washington the following week to become the first rookie in Giants history with at least two sacks in consecutive games.   Those are impressive achievements for a player with just one year of major college football experience after stops at two junior colleges. Pierre‐Paul’s first NFL season was one of intense learning of both the Giants’ defense and what is required to succeed in the NFL.   “It was a major thing for him,” Coughlin said, “because of the newness of the language, the fact that he hadn’t had a great deal of experience – it was all new to him last year.”   Pierre‐Paul has worked with the first team in training camp. On Monday, Osi Umenyiora, the two‐time Pro Bowler who started every game at right end last season, will reportedly practice for the first time. If so, what does that mean for Pierre‐Paul?

“I don’t know,” he said. “It’s up to the coaches. I’m going out there and (doing) whatever the coaches want. If they want me to be on the second team, I’m going to do it for the team.   “I’d love for Osi to come back. That’s more defensive line pressure.”   *Coughlin said the new‐look offensive line, with center David Baas, has work to do to achieve the communication and consistency the coach craves.   “We had some errors, there isn’t any doubt,” Coughlin said. “One play we checked to a draw and no one blocked the inside backer. We’re fighting our way through some things in terms of communication. We have a new center in there and he has a way to go.”   The linemen are convinced they’ll have the kinks eliminated in a short time.    “In the first one, you really want to communicate,” guard David Diehl said. “You want to get on the same page. It's good to get some short yardage situations. You want to have scoring drives and get some first downs. Unfortunately, we didn't do that (Saturday). We've got a lot to learn, but we've got some good film now to study to really see the things we need to improve on going into next week.”   *Although the result was disappointing, many of the players were thrilled just to be in uniform and playing a game. They missed the on‐field work and interaction with their teammates in the spring because of the lockout.   “It felt great to be back out there,” said linebacker Michael Boley, who scored the Giants’ lone touchdown on an early interception return. “It's been a long offseason. We've been beating up on ourselves for two weeks, so it was actually good to go out and hit someone else and experience the live action.”   “It was good to get back out here and get into a game situation,” Diehl said. “We've been butting heads with our own team for the last couple weeks. Even though you practice hard, and we've had some great practices, you can't ever simulate the speed of the game. It's great to get out here and get the pads hitting, getting some plays in. It's great to get the first game out of the way.”   *The Giants’ starting lineups:   Offense: QB Eli Manning, RB Ahmad Bradshaw, FB Bear Pascoe, WRs Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham, TE Jake Ballard, LT Will Beatty, LG David Diehl, C David Baas, RG Chris Snee and RT Kareem McKenzie.

August 14 On the first preseason game: There are a couple things that do not get recognized in a game such as last night’s game because you didn’t win and the offense wasn’t very good and all of those things are very true. There will be no excuses expressed here either. I thought that for the evening, there were a few good things that ought to be noted. I thought our defense played well for the entire evening. Now we did give up some big play passes and we did end up the night with 100 yards rushing against, but for the most part I still felt we played pretty well. We did not turn the ball over and that has been a major, major theme of ours all throughout the offseason, pounding away with the coaches and so far in the early part of our camp, that has been a major focus. We did have five penalties and two on special teams, two on offense and one on defense so I really didn’t think it was a sloppily played game. August 11 On whether or not training camp has changed: Well we’re using every second that we can. Meetings-wise, jog-through, walk-through-wise, we’re restricted to one practice so we’ve still tried to approach it with a lot of information. Of course we’ll peel back for the game but there have been some changes in the way we approach things but by and large we’ve spent a lot of time in the classroom and hopefully that’ll pay off. August 8 On the consistency of the offensive line: Well that develops over time. When they get to know each other well and they communicate well. I look and see guys like Beatty who have been around here for long enough to be able to communicate with Diehl. Diehl has kind of taken him under his wing in terms of the communication process. The right side is the right side. Snee and McKenzie worked together for quite some time. We’ve got to get David Baas involved in probably being a little bit more vocal and he’s trying to get comfortable and each day he practices more and more and I can see it coming. It’ll be there. It’ll develop. On significance of rule changes: Defenseless player. You better know what you’re doing with a defenseless player. What you can hit, where, who is a defenseless player. The additions of, for example, the running back that’s held up. One of the problems with all that is we didn’t always get a whistle but we’re supposed to get a whistle now. A whistle will stop a lot of that but there are certain situations that the players are unfortunately now, without a lot of football, this preseason is going to have to be a big learning experience, in my opinion, in that regard because there’s semantics that go with the understanding of this and of course different parts of the anatomy involved too. I would say that that’s going to take some adjustment.

August 15 On the first preseason game: I thought there were opportunities and we had chances but we just didn’t hit some. A lot of times in games, that is the difference between what’s a good game and what is not, just hitting on those plays and things could have been different. I think you are always going to learn a lot from the first preseason game. Sometimes it is a good wake up call and things we need to improve on. Coaches and players think we know all the answers and we think we know all the stuff but then you get a new defense and new things and you see what you know and what you need to improve. It is a wake up call. On Domenik Hixon: He has been a good player for us in the past and we missed him last year. He is a guy who can play a number of spots and can catch the ball. He is a tough player and it was good to see him back in the action getting some catches and back to his old self. On the tight ends: I thought we blocked very well. Seeing Jake Ballard in the run game gives us a strong guy and held his own in that aspect. They had a few catches. One to Bear Pascoe and we hit Ballard on an inside option route. They did some good things. Again, we didn’t have our whole package in there for them but it would be good to get Travis Beckum back so we can get him back in the action. August 11 On the receivers: I feel great about them, I think our guys are playing great and they have a good feel for what’s going on. We have big play potential with our receivers and it is a matter of finding out what our guys do well. What is going to be our identity and those things can change year in and year out. What is your makeup and what guys do well... Every receiver has a shot and every receiver does something well. It is just a matter of putting them in positions to use their skills to the best of their ability and make sure they are comfortable. That is what we are doing. We are trying guys out to see what combinations and what routes are and what’s going to be our style this year. August 7 On camp: I think everything’s going smoothly. I think the offense, we were doing a lot of good things and guys were getting better. There’s always parts of camp when you have good days or some days when things are a little tougher – inserting new plays where things have got to go. But I think so far, guys are playing fast. We have a number of receivers, we’ve got a good grasp of the offense, rotating a lot of guys in. They’re all making plays and doing good stuff. Tight ends are doing well. I feel well about what we’re doing. We just have to work better and keep working and getting better.

August 15 On Osi Umenyiora: Having the quality of defensive ends we have, all of us make each other better. From a practice standpoint, getting to work with him and learn things on the fly with him being on the field. With him on the football field on Sundays, it makes it very difficult between either one of us. You’ve kind of got to pick and choose. Then you throw JPP in the mix, it really gives us a lot of freedom to do a lot of different things. So yeah, we definitely make each other better. August 11 On reason for confidence: Because I believe in my team. August 10 On Jason Pierre-Paul: Confident. This early in the season, you just feel—you can kind of get the feel of it. He knows what he’s doing a little bit better. He’s more confident from having a year under his belt. He has a kind of a swagger about him before he’s going on the football field, knowing what is expected of him and going and doing it.

August 4 On Brandon Jacobs restructuring his contract; He loves me and I respect him more than anything for doing that. He called me when he did it and he’s like, ‘I want you here.’ Like I said, this is where I wanted to be. On whether this is an upside to sharing carries with Brandon Jacobs: Of course. We kind of take it to that part, just because it keeps us healthy and you last longer in the game. You have to look towards the end of your career too. On goals for the 2011 season: You always want to be better than last year and I just want to make this team a better team as much as I can – running the ball, protecting Eli, or whatever’s on me. On protecting the ball: I’ve worked on just the strength of holding the ball in my hands, everything. Wrist protection, everything.

August 10 On training camp: It’s definitely an adjustment for me. I’m playing a completely different position. The schedule and the way things are run are a lot different than the camps in the past. Each and every rep, it makes it that much more important. To make sure that you continue to make progress from the day before, because you only get a limited number of reps. The good thing is that we have a bunch of film time to catch up the young guys and the new guys who are just getting here and have time to go through corrections and do all of that stuff. The schedule is laid out the way that Coach Coughlin thought was for the best for us. It just makes you feel how important each and every day you come out here is, because you don’t have those two practices. On developing chemistry among the offensive line: It’s going well. David Baas is doing a great job of stepping in and really getting involved in the offense. It’s nice having a veteran coming in who is very familiar with the terminology and the language of things. And also with William [Beatty] stepping in at left tackle, now getting his opportunity to start – these are things that we’re consciously working on because we have to have that cohesion come week one when we play the Redskins. We’re watching extra film, we’re working, we’re making sure that we’re doing a lot of verbal communication to get everything hammered out here throughout practice. We’re looking forward to finally play some live action. Obviously, when you’re using so much communication, our D-linemen have been around our offense for so long that we’re kind of giving them an advantage at times. But we’re going to do whatever we need to do to get things right right now.
