Please bring your posters to Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica, 3121 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago. For more information visit the 2019 March for Life Chicago website at http://www.marchforlife-chicago.org The March for Kids campaign is a “pass through” event that is a no cost event for Councils. It is run much like the ID Drive. Mercy Home will provide the aprons, the cans, and the shamrock pins. The general idea is to get permission from the Pastors of each of our parishes for the Knights to “shake the can” after all Masses one weekend in March. (Actually, any time between late February and early April.) Mercy Home will be supplying a formal request letter to the Pastors to aid us in gaining permission. Fr. Scott Donohue, the CEO, who is also a Knight, will sign the letter. Order forms, a pulpit announcement, and a brochure on the history of Mercy Home have been sent to the District Deputies. They should be forwarding this information to the Grand Knights. One of the issues that Fr. McGivney wanted to address when he founded the Knights was the care of widows and orphans. President’s Message:

Brother Knights and Friends:

I hope everyone had a Blessed and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year with your families and friends

We have a number of events and programs that have recently completed and are underway in the archdiocese. The Chicago Archdiocesan Chapter hosted a dinner for our District Deputies at Gino’s East in Rosemont on November 15. The chapter also hosted a lunch for our District Deputies on December 1, during the Winter Meeting in Normal. Many councils have supplied warm coats to children throughout the archdiocese by their participation in the Coats for Kids program. Several councils have run a Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest.

We will judge the next level of the poster contest competition at our next chapter meeting on Thursday, January 24. Please bring your posters to Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica, 3121 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago.

Officers. In addition, it provides a wonderful venue for the exchange of ideas with your Brother Knights from across Illinois.

I am asking all councils to consider participation in the following two (2) activities:

Wayne Messmer plays

Fr. Damien the

Leper Priest of Molokai

Christ the King Council of the Knights of Columbus will present the one-man play, Damien, on Saturday, March 2 in the church in Lombard. The star of the show is Wayne Messmer, known in Chicago as the renowned singer of the National Anthem at sporting events, but he is also recognized as an author (The Voice of Victory), broadcaster and actor.

The play deals with the life of Father Joseph DeVeuster (Father Damien, the leper priest of Molokai) in Hawaii. Between 1873- 1889, Father Damien dedicated his life to helping the lepers and making their time in seclusion more honorable and meaningful.

He was canonized a Saint in October 11, 2009. The play is very powerful and moving, and Wayne Messmer becomes Father Damien for the audience.

“Mark your calendars now; tickets will first be available after the first week in January 2019. VIP tickets are limited to 100.”

Let’s make plans to welcome some “Very Special People” to Soldier Field for a “Very Special Event”.

JANUARY 31ST

At our Illinois mid-year meeting, District Deputies and State officers were able to gather and discuss issues facing our Order and the Catholic Church. One critical issue discussed was the ever increasing attacks on our Catholic Faith, both physically in areas of the world where Christians are persecuted, and spiritually right here at home in the United States.

Why? Catholic men are not stepping “into the breach” to defend our Faith. Back in the Middle Ages, Knights rallied against attacks on Christianity striving to stop the destruction of their Faith. Currently, while the Knights of Columbus are not taking up sword and shield to defend our Faith, the call to duty is sounding. We as Catholics and men of Faith need to answer that call by equipping ourselves with the arms appropriate for today.

Those arms are Faith in Action (FIA) Programs and Evangelization through new membership.

Faith in Action is our forged weapon of combat for the hidden battle waged against our Catholic Church. Prayerfully implementing FIA programs, allows us to stand up and defend our Church as well as: strengthen the faltering resolve of Catholics, lead others back to the Church, and evangelize new members. By actively evangelizing and recruiting new members into your council, Knights engage head on the issues we face.

You as Knights of Columbus have what it takes to succeed. Through your action and involvement discard tired Council programs that no longer appeal to Catholics today. Excite both existing and new members with Faith in Action Programs. Your District Deputy and Diocesan team will assist you as you determine which FIA programs your council will wield to insure continued Christian presence in our society and culture. Act now! How you respond to this call will determine all of our futures. The Knights of Columbus are the strong right arm of the Church; it is time to exercise that arm.
