Enhancing the New VocabularyAs we analyzed and discussed the pre- and post-assessment (attached at the end of this unit) across our eight kindergarten classrooms at Chets Creek, the classes with the most gain were the classes in which the teachers kept the vocabulary words in the forefront of instruction all day long. It took more than simply doing the activities at a specified time each day. It took the teacher reinforcing the words throughout the year, so much so that the children internalized the vocabulary. In the most successful classes, the children used the words in their conversation and made sure that everyone knew when they had used a word! The teacher couldn’t get through a read-aloud without the children identifying a vocabulary word and the teacher always took the time to remind the class of the definition and talk about how that word was used in this new text. In the most successful classes, we also began to see children use the vocabulary word wall in their writing and began to see the words appearing in their written pieces. Therefore, we cannot emphasize enough the activities below in enhancing the vocabulary.

Make sure that the parents of the children know that you are studying vocabulary and what the words are for the week. Encourage them to let you know anytime their child uses one of the words.

Use the vocabulary words each day in your morning message. Make sure to invite the students to circle the word and tell the class what the word means.

Put the words and pictures up in the room as a Vocabulary Word Wall. Consider keep the pictures up so the children can reference the pictures and words. You should begin to see the words appearing in the students’ writing.

Make a class word bank. Use the picture cards with the word written on the back of each card. File the cards alphabetically. Pull words occasionally to use in games or just a quick oral activity as a filler.

Put a small Velcro on each picture card and add the word so students can pull the word off the wall to use in their writing.

Put a tally mark beside each word every time it is used in class. Which word is the most popular? This is also a quick reference for you on which words the children know well and have internalized and which ones they still need to practice.

Keep an ongoing list of vocabulary words that you hear in read-alouds. List the word and the name of the book each time the students identify it. You can also add words/books that the children find in their independent reading and also add the child’s name!

Since this unit comes with pictures, make sure to turn the pictures into cards that you can use. Let the students explain the pictures often and how they relate to the words.

Play games with the words and picture cards during Skills Block. For instance, put five picture cards on a chalk ledge. Say a vocabulary word and choose a child to come identify the picture that matches the word. If the class needs practice, invite the student to make a sentence with the word or explain the picture’s association with the word. This is especially good practice using the pictures/words that the children are not using as often orally or in their writing.

Play games with the cards/words on the wall. Turn off the lights and give a child a flashlight. Give a clue about the word and invite the child to highlight the picture/word with the flashlight. You’ll have every child’s attention!

For a quick filler, hold up two cards and say, “Which card is ___?”

Play Jeopardy with the picture cards. Divide the class into two teams and use an Easy button from Staples. Bring up one person from each team and show a picture card. The first child to hit the button and say the word correctly gets the point. A real favorite!

Use the cards or words for lining up. Give a table of students a clue or show a picture and let them discuss what they think the word is. If they get the word correct, they line up. If not, they get another word until they get one right.

Call vocabulary words “glitter” words or “star” words. Every time a child uses one of the words orally or in his writing, sprinkle him with a little shiny confetti or give him a star sticker.

Have a “TinkerBELL” in the room and ring it every time a vocabulary word is used. Stop everything and make the student a star by telling the class what this smart vocabulary hunter said or wrote.

Encourage students to put a “thumbs up” every time they hear one of their vocabulary words.

Place the words that the class is currently studying for the week on the door outside the room with a note challenging any adult entering the room tp use one of the vocabulary words with the class.

Give each student a special certificate (following) each time he uses a vocabulary word while speaking or writing and keep the certificates on the wall in the room or send them home for parents to see.

Use the vocabulary pictures/ words for phonemic awareness practice by clapping the syllables. Because many of the words are multisyllabic, they make great words to clap. Just hearing the words more often will make them more familiar.

Children love drawing the words. Even when you can’t think of a way to draw the word, the students can! Use the student-drawn illustrations for a bulletin board.

Children also love acting out the word or deciding on a motion for the word. You’ll be amazed at what the children create.

Put up a chart of the children’s names and give a tally mark for each time they say or use a vocabulary word in their writing, report about using seeing or hearing a vocabulary word inside or outside the classroom. Periodically, count up the points and give a prize to the winner.

Showcase the students’ writing as they use vocabulary words. Samples of student writing using vocabulary words makes a GREAT bulletin board to show how vocabulary instruction is being internalized into writing!

If you create other activities that help your class use the vocabulary words, please send them to us. We’d love to include them in this list to share. You can send them [email protected].

Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina

disturb – ordinary – imitate – refreshed – finally – mischievous

SummaryCaps for Sale is a timeless classic, in print for over fifty years. It is a story about a peddler and a group of playful monkeys. The peddler falls asleep and wakes up to find that the monkeys have taken all of his hats. They imitate everything he does and finally when he throws down his hat, they throw down the hats they have taken.

GenreFolktaleHow do you know? A folktale is fiction. Caps for Sale has all of the typical characteristics of fiction: characters (peddler, monkeys); setting (in the country); problem (monkeys take the caps); solution (monkeys imitate peddler and throw down the hats). Caps for Sale has good and bad characters, like the peddler being good and the monkeys being naughty which is characteristic of folktales. It also uses repeating phrases, another folktale feature.

disturbUse in the story In the story the peddler sat under the tree very, very slowly and then leaned back very carefully so as not to disturb the hats of his head. He didn’t want the hats to fall off as he sat down or while he was sleeping. Say the word, disturb.

DefinitionIf you disturb something, you mess it up or upset it. For instance, if you leave your homework on your bed and the dog plays on the bed, you might come back and see that the dog has disturbed your homework. He has messed it up and upset your homework where you left it. If you disturb someone, you upset them. If you disturb a baby while he is sleeping, he might start crying. If you are reading silently at school and someone interrupts over the intercom, it might disturb your reading. The unexpected noise might upset you because it disturbed your thought process while you were reading. Say the word that means to upset, disturb.

Use in different waysLet’s think of things that might disturb us. If what I say would be disturbing to you, say the word, disturb. If it wouldn’t be disturbing to you, don’t say anything at all.

Use in the story In the folktale the peddler was not like an ordinary peddler. He didn’t do things in the usual way. Ordinary peddlers didn’t carry their hats on their head! They carried hats in a pack on their back or in a cart. Say the word, ordinary.

DefinitionOrdinary describes something that is normal, usual or expected. It’s the way it’s always been. It’s common. On an ordinary day we get up, eat breakfast, get dressed and go to school. Say the word that means something that is the same as always, ordinary.

Use in different waysLet’s think about some things that are ordinary. If the thing I say is ordinary, say the word, ordinary. If it’s not ordinary, don’t respond at all.

Draw a picture. Brainstorm a list of ordinary things that happen each day, e.g., mom brings me to school, I read a book at school, I go to recess, etc. Brainstorm another list of things that are not ordinary such as going to Disneyland, going to a water park, eating birthday cake, etc. Give each student a piece of paper and show them how to fold it in half. On one side ask each child to draw a picture of something ordinary and on the other, something that in not ordinary. After completing the pictures, invite students to share with the class.

guess what the monkeys did? They imitated him. They threw down their hats too. Say the word, imitate.

DefinitionYou imitate someone when you do exactly what they do. If your teacher reads Caps for Sale and pretends to get mad just like the peddler by shouting and pretending to throw her hat down, when you read the story you can imitate her by shouting and pretending to throw your hat down. Say the word that means to copy what someone else does, imitate.

Use in different waysLet’s play a game. Develop a rhythm of slapping knees and then clapping, slapping knees and then clapping, over and over again. Use this ditty while you slap and clap in rhythm,

Let’s play imitate just for funI’ll have a turn. Then you’ll have one.

After the ditty, you start by doing some motion such as waving or snapping for 8 beats. The class joins in and copies what you do. Go around the room, say the ditty with motions and then let each child have a turn making up a motion for the class to imitate, substituting their name for the underline. After you play the game, remind the students that they are imitating each other.

Imitate an animal. Invite each child to choose an animal and then encourage the children to imitate that animal with sound and motions. Finally, invite the class to guess what animal they are imitating. For instance, children could imitate

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

by Paul Galdone

meadow – gobble – villain – creak – hooves – wise

SummaryOnce upon a time there were three hungry billy goats who wanted to go over a bridge to eat grass in the meadow. The problem was that in order to get there, they had to cross a bridge where a mean ugly trolled lived. They tricked the troll and got exactly what they wanted.

GenreFairy taleHow do you know? This Norwegian story is usually identified as a fairy tale. Like most fairy tales it has been retold through the generations and has good (the billy goats) and bad (troll) characters. It has a simple plot and an unspecified time and place which means it could take place anywhere at any time. It begins with “once upon a time” and has a “happy ever after” ending which are characteristic of fairy tales. It also uses the number three as in the three billy goats and has repetitive dialogue. What it lacks that most fairy tales have is some sort of magic. Fairy tales are under the umbrella of fiction. This story is easily identified as fiction because it has all the narrative story elements and since the goats talk, we know it can’t be a true story!

Where the Wild Things Are

by Virginia Lee Burton

private – tame – adventure – frighten – rumpus – longing

Summary One night a little boy named Max got into trouble for being too wild. He was sent to bed without his supper. But Max doesn’t care because he goes on an imaginary adventure to where the wild things are. It is there that he becomes king, and he can be as terrible as he chooses. He has a party with the wild things. But Max realizes that he misses his home and returns to his very own room.

GenreFictionHow do you know? Like all fictional pieces, Where the Wild Things Are has elements of a narrative story. There is Max, the main character. The story’s setting is mostly in a place where the wild things live. The problem is that Max realizes that although he likes being able to be wild he misses being home and longs to return. You know that this is fiction because a forest can’t grow in a bedroom! And, of course, Max could not really sail off to a far away place by himself! There isn’t really a place where wild things live, let alone a place where he would be king. Much of this story is told in the illustrations so help the students use the pictures to tell and predict the story as you read it for the first time.

privateUse in the story In the story Max sails away to the place where the wild things live. He sails on a private boat to get there. It is a small boat that was meant just for him to use with his name on it. Max’s boat is private because it belonged to only him. Say the word, private.

Definition When something is private it is personal and not to be shared. You might have a place in your room that is private where you like to be by yourself and not share the space with anyone. Say the word that means to have something that is personal that you don’t want to share, private.

Use in different ways Let’s think about things that are private. When you have something that is private, it means something that is personal that you do not want to share. If I say something that is private, say the word, private. If I say something that is not private, do not respond.

showed their terrible claws as if they were trying to scare Max. Max had to tame them so they would listen to him. That means he had to train them so they would not be so wild. He wanted them to be gentle. Say the word, tame.

Definition When you tame something, you take it from being wild and train it to be gentle. When you get a new puppy that gets into everything, you have to tame that puppy so that it does not tear up things in the house. When you see a parrot sitting on a pirate’s shoulder at the zoo, the bird has been tamed. When you see lions or elephants or bears at the circus doing tricks, they are been tamed. Say the word that means to take something wild and train it to be gentle, tame.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

by Jan Brett

tempting – gruff – enraged – necessary – shrill – terrified

SummaryCome and step inside this wonderful tale set deep in the forest. Once upon a time there lived a family of three bears - a great huge bear, a middle-sized bear and a little, small wee bear. A little girl named Goldilocks was wandering through the forest and stumbled upon their home. She saw no one around and decided to go inside. The three bears soon return home from an adventure only to discover someone had been eating their porridge, sitting in their chairs (oh and don’t forget, breaking one) and sleeping in their beds while they were away. Through investigation they found a little girl inside their home and they were none too happy about it! P.S. -Check out the fantastic drawings done in this book. They tell a complete story of their own.

GenreFairy tale How do you know? A fairy tale is a story that has been retold through the generations. Like most fairy tales this story has a simple plot and an unspecified time and place which means it could take place anywhere at any time. Often in fairy tales the number 3 is significantly used. This story is an example of three playing a significant role -hence the three bears. Also fairy tales usually begin with four little enchanting words “Once upon a time. . .” Guess what, so does this story!

temptingUse in the storyShortly after Goldilocks has peeped through the keyhole and lifted the latch on the three bears’ door, she finds steaming porridge set upon the table. She lifts the lid of the bowl and instantly smells the sweet aroma of roasted nuts, honey and berries. Even though Goldilocks knows this porridge is not hers the scent is so tempting she decides to eat it anyway. Say the word, tempting.

DefinitionWhen something is tempting we get the feeling that we want this something very badly but often what we want is not something we should have. Sometimes we are able to resist the temptation and other times we give in. Different people think certain things are tempting. For example a piece of chocolate cake with creamy butternut vanilla icing might be very tempting to a person who is on a diet, because when you are on a diet you are not allowed to have sugary foods like cake and candies. Say the word that means a feeling of wanting something very badly that we probably shouldn’t have? tempting

Use in different waysLet’s think of some times when we might feel are tempting. If what I say makes you feel that you want it badly but should not have it, say tempting. If not, you don’t have to say anything at all.

your sister really wants a cookie but only one cookie is left and you want it tempting

you see a pack of delicious gum - mom says no but you still want it tempting

you see a rusty old wagon with a broken handle and a missing wheel no response

Make a Concept Chart. Let’s have some fun and hopefully be a little silly! Create a two column chart. Place the word “tempting” above one column and the words “no way” above the other side. Ask students to turn and talk with a partner in order to choose either an example of something tempting or an example that if asked they would say “no way!”. Invite students to share their answers.

gruffUse in the storyAfter the three bears have returned home they begin to discover strange things in their home. The first strange happening is the great, huge bear notices a spoon sticking straight up in his porridge. He knows that he didn’t leave the spoon there and he says “SOMEBODY HAS BEEN AT MY PORRIDGE!” in his great, rough, gruff voice. Each time the bears speak, the way their voice sounds is described in the book. One of the words used to describe the great, huge bear’s voice is gruff which means that his voice was deep and rough. Say the word, gruff.

DefinitionThe word gruff means to speak in a deep and harsh voice. When someone speaks with a gruff voice it can sound scary. In The Three Billy Goats Gruff the troll had a gruff voice. If the substitute teacher spoke in a gruff voice you might feel frightened. Say the word that means to speak in a low and harsh voice, gruff.

Each time the three bears find their eaten porridge, their dirty and broken chairs and their messy beds, the great, huge bear becomes enraged. He speaks in an angry gruff voice and has an angry expression on his face. He feels upset because someone has obviously come into his home without his permission and is taking and breaking things inside his house. Say the word, enraged.

DefinitionThe word enraged means feeling very angry or furious. shrillUse in the story Earlier in this story we talked about the word gruff and how this word describes the sound of the great, huge bear’s voice. Well, a different word is used to describe the little, small, wee bear’s voice. As Goldilocks is sleeping the bears find her in the bed of the little, small wee bear. When she hears the voices of the great, huge bear and the voice of the middle-sized bear, Goldilocks believes it is only part of her dream. But when she hears the voice of the little, small wee bear she wakes up instantly because the wee bear’s voice is so shrill. Say the word, shrill.

DefinitionWhen a sound is shrill it means the noise is loud and high. Shrill noises often startle a person or hurt their ears. Think of a siren on an ambulance or police car. Can you hear the loud high noise coming from the car? A siren is a very shrill sound. Say the word that means a loud and high sound, shrill.

Quietly whisper to each student a type of sound you want them to make (a large angry dog, heavy footsteps, squealing, car brakes screeching, a bird squawking). Ask the students to pull on their ear if the sound is shrill and to make a funny face if not.

terrifiedUse in the storyWhen Goldilocks awakens to the sound of the little, small wee bear’s voice, she opens her eyes to see one great, huge bear, one middle-sized bear, and one wee bear. Can you imagine how terrified she must have felt? As soon as she saw the bears she rolled out of bed, leaped out the window and ran as fast as her legs would carry her away from the house. You know, those three bears never ever did see her again! Say the word, terrified.

Harry the Dirty Dog

by Gene Zion

clever – dashed – disguise – furiously – lovingly – content

SummaryHarry is a dog that just doesn’t like to take a bath so he hides the scrubbing brush. Then he goes on his own adventure and gets so dirty that his family does not recognize him when he returns home. He begs for a bath so his family will realize that he is really their dog. When they give him a bath they realize that he is their very own, Harry.

GenreFictionHow do you know? Like all fiction stories Harry the Dirty Dog has the elements of a narrative story. It has a main character (Harry), and a setting (the yard and bath). It has a problem (being dirty) and then a solution (taking a bath so that his family will recognize him).

cleverUse in the story Harry was smart and had a plan to help his family figure out that he was home, just dirty. To convince them, Harry did all of his old, clever tricks to help his family recognize him. His clever tricks included a hand stand, rolling over, flipping and playing dead. Say the word, clever.

DefinitionSomeone who is clever is quick, bright and smart. He is good at figuring things out and solving problems. He often can quickly come up with a plan. In The Three Billy Goats Gruff the smallest billy goat is very clever when he says for the troll to wait for his middle-sized brother. His clever plan gets him across the bridge to eat grass in the meadow. Say the word that means to be good at figuring out things and solving problems, clever.

Use in different waysLet’s think about things that are clever. If I say something that is clever, point to your head as you say the word, clever, since clever means that you are a good thinker. If I say something that isn’t clever, do not say anything.

In the story Harry dashed up the stairs because he wanted to take a bath so his family would recognize him. That means that he was rushing up the stairs in a hurry. He was running just as fast as his little dog legs would take him because he couldn’t wait. Say the word, dashed.

DefinitionDashed means that someone is in a hurry and is rushing. They are running fast. You might dash across the street when you see a car coming because you want to hurry across before the car gets to you. Your dad might dash across the intersection when the light turns yellow because he doesn’t want it to turn red. You might dash to answer the phone before it stops ringing. Say the word that means that someone is in a hurry and running fast, dashed.

Use in different waysLet’s think of some things that make us dash. If you would have to move fast to do this, move your arms quickly back and forth as if you are running while you say dashed. If you wouldn’t, do not say anything.

Share another way the word is used. You might be familiar with a race called the 50-yard dash. It is a race with a starting point and an ending point and is usually run on a track. It’s called a dash because it is a short fast run. When the judge says to start, “Get ready. Get set. Go!” everyone starts running in a hurry so they can rush to the end and be the first one across the finish line. That’s the 50-yard dash!

considerate – delighted – devious – horrid – alarmed – hero

SummaryRed Riding Hood is given directions from her mother to go straight to Granny’s house with gifts and not to talk to strangers. After first resisting the temptation to talk to the wolf, who approaches her in the woods, she is finally convinced and carries on a conversation on her walk to Granny’s house. The wolf hurries on ahead to Granny’s house and then pretends to be Granny when Red Riding Hood arrives. He wants to gobble her up too. A hunter passing by hears the commotion and rescues Red Riding Hood and Granny.

GenreFictionHow do you know? Like all fictional pieces, A Pocket for Corduroy has the elements of a narrative story. There is a main character (Corduroy) and a setting (the Laundromat). There is a problem (Corduroy gets lost). There are several events on the way to the solution (Lisa finds Corduroy). You know this is a make believe story because Corduroy has feelings, talks, wears clothes and moves around like he is a human.

When Lisa needed to help her mom fold the laundry, she told Corduroy to sit patiently and wait for her to finish. Corduroy did sit patiently… for a while. He sat quietly and watched, but then he heard the mention of pockets. He got distracted and decided to get up and go look for something to use to make a pocket of his own. When he was no longer sitting he was not being patient. Say the word, patiently.

DefinitionWhen you are patient, you are very calm while you are waiting for something to happen. You don’t complain and you don’t become upset. When you go to the movies and you get there early, you have to be very patient to wait for the movie to start. Say the word that means to wait calmly for something to happen, patiently.

Use in different waysLet’s think about being patient. When we are patient we wait calmly for something to happen. If I say something that says you are patient, say the word, patient. If I say something that means you are not being patient, don’t say anything.

If the teacher asks you a question and you are not sure of the answer, you might hesitate before you answer. You might stop and think for a second because you are unsure. Say the word that means that you wait or pause because you are not feeling sure, hesitate.

She wants to stay and find him but her mother says that they have to go because the Laundromat is closing. Lisa has to choose between two difficult things that she does not want to do. She does not want to stay after closing time and get into trouble but she does not want to leave Corduroy either. She has a problem. What a dilemma! Say the word, dilemma.

you take, the other friend would have his feelings hurt. Say the word that means you are caught between two things, dilemma.

Remember that dilemma means that you are caught between two things. Let’s think about dilemmas in other stories we have read.

What was the peddler’s dilemma in Caps for Sale after he woke up and found out that his hats were gone? He wanted to go back to work so he could make some money but he couldn’t until he found his hats. He wanted to get his hats back. He is caught between two things – going back to work and finding his hats.

What is the troll’s dilemma in The Three Billy Goats Gruff when the first Billy Goat goes across his bridge? The troll wants to gobble up the small Billy Goat but then he finds out that there’s a bigger brother so he lets the smallest goat go so he can eat the middle sized goat. He is caught between two things – eating the small Billy Goat or letting him go so he can eat the bigger goat.

What is Goldilock’s dilemma when she knocks on the door of the Bears’ house?Should she stay outside because nobody answers the door or should she go in and see what is inside? She is curious. She is caught between two things – knowing that she shouldn’t go in if someone is not home and her curiosity.

tumbledUse in the story Corduroy got in the artist’s laundry bag. Just as the artist put all of his clothes in the dryer and was about to shut the door, Corduroy tumbled out onto the floor. He fell out and rolled around onto the floor. Say the word, tumbled.

DefinitionWhen you tumble, you fall and then roll over and over. Tumbling can be fun if you do it on purpose like if you are taking a gymnastic or cheerleading class. Tumbling is not fun if you tumble off the monkey bars and get hurt. In the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill, Jack falls down and breaks his crown which was not fun because he got hurt. Jill came tumbling after him but I bet she did it just to have fun so he wouldn’t feel so bad. Say the word that means that you roll around and around, tumble.

His overalls were so wet that the artist put them into the dryer. When they dried, the artist put the warm, dry overalls on Corduroy so that he would not be so damp. Say the word, damp.

DefinitionWhen something is damp it is slightly wet. It’s not soaking wet – you can’t wring out any water - but just a little wet. When you wear your tennis shoes after it rains, they get damp from the wetness of the grass and from the puddles. Say the word that means slightly wet, damp.

Instead of remaining sitting, he slid off the chair and went looking for something to make a pocket. Say the word, sidetracked.

DefinitionBeing sidetracked means that someone forgets what they are doing and starts doing something else. They change what they are doing. They start doing one thing and then get distracted or sidetracked and start doing something else. You might be going to the kitchen for a cookie and someone stops to talk to you and before you know it, you forget about the cookie and go out to play. Peter’s Chairby Ezra Jack Keats

fussing – rascal – jealous – arranged – cradle – cooperate

SummaryLike many older brothers and sisters, Peter is jealous of his new baby sister. She is getting all of his stuff. Peter runs away but soon realizes that he really has grown out of his stuff when he realizes that he doesn’t fit in his chair anymore. He learns to accept his new baby sister in the family.

GenreRealistic fictionHow do you know?Peter’s Chair is a fictional story. It has all the characteristics of a narrative such as a main character (Peter), a setting (Peter’s house), a problem (new sister getting all of Peter’s stuff), and a solution (Peter realizes when he can’t fit into his chair that he has grown and that it will be okay for his sister to have all the little baby stuff that he can no longer use). But the story didn’t really happen. The author made up the characters and the story which is why it is fiction. It is realistic because it takes place in modern times in a setting that could be real. Peter is a character who faces a problem within what is possible in real life. Although this story didn’t really happen, the events in the story could have happened and that makes it realistic fiction.

fussingUse in the story Peter peeks into his new sister’s room and his mother is fussing with the cradle. She is straightening the sheets, recovering the baby with the blanket and making sure that everything is just right. Everything is all right, of course, but she can’t help checking to make sure over and over again. Say the word, fussing.

DefinitionIf you are fussing, you are worrying too much about something that is not that important. If you hang up your backpack in the morning and then you go over to it again and again to straighten it out and make sure that it is hanging perfectly even, you are fussing over your backpack. It’s not really important, but you just can’t leave it alone. You are fussing needlessly about your backpack. Say the word that means that someone is worrying about something that he doesn’t need to be concerned about, fussing.

Use in different waysLet’s think of some things where someone might be fussing. If I describe a situation where someone is fussing, say the word fussing. If it doesn’t seem like fussing, say nothing.

Share an alternate definition. You can probably think of another way that you have heard the word fussing used. Some words have several meanings. Just like in our story fussing means that someone is worrying about something that he doesn’t need to be concerned about, but it could also mean having an argument. When you and your brother are arguing with words, your mother might say that you are fussing. When it is bedtime and you don’t want to go to bed, you might be fussing with your mom, begging and arguing with her to let you stay up later. Sometimes a word can have more than one meaning.

DefinitionIf someone is sneaky and teasing when they are playing with you, we could say that he/she is being a rascal. If you hide when your mom says that it is time to go to the park, she might call you a rascal for teasing her. If you set a mouse trap and the mouse steals the cheese without setting off the trap and getting caught, you might call him a rascal.
