Africa, Asia and elsewherearound the world are on displayin a reconstructed 1800s schoolhouse adjacent to the center’stwo-story main building, wherethose made in the U.S. are beingshown.

Included in the school houseexhibit are two nativity scenesmade by a married couple serv-ing as missionaries at the visi-tors' center.

One scene includes a largeflat rock pulled from a streamnear to the visitors' center whileanother is made from woodfound in the area, Sorenson said.

“We have some very creativeand talented people here. Thiscouple wanted to contribute bymaking something for us,” hesaid.

Among the internationalcollection is a nativity scenesecretly carved by a Chineseman in communist China, whereJennie Best, a Latter-day SaintsChurch member and longtimenativity project volunteer fromPerry, said Christianity is forbid-den to be practiced.

A Florida couple that islending it to the nativity exhibitsomehow obtained it, she said.

One foreign-made exceptionis a large nativity scene made inBethlehem, Israel, the birth-place of Jesus Christ.

Made by Merton Bartelmay,an Israeli, the exquisitely andmeticulously carved olive woodnativity scene sits in the lobbyof the center’s main buildingalong with a tall Christmas tree.

“This wood is specialbecause you can't carve olivewood unless it has dried for 14years,” Sorenson said.

Among the donated nativityscenes in the main building is a“Nativity in a Tomb.”

Even though its name doesn'tlend itself to the birth of Christ, the nativity scene by GermanNorbert Kohen was among thosemade by wood carving craftsmenin Oberammergau, Germany, atthe close of World War II.

Built with hinges, it resem-bles a bomb or bullet whenclosed. When opened, a careful-ly carved nativity scene wasfound inside.

American soliders weregiven these unique nativity cre-ations as thanks for sparing thetown from destruction by U.S.bombers, Sorenson said.

Oberammergau could havebeen blown off the face of theearth. It was adjacent to the siteof an underground researchcomplex where Messerschmittjet engines were developed forGerman fighter aircraft.

Also in the building is anativity scene consisting of mid-size modern metal statues, mostof which roughly resemble StarWars villain Darth Vader.

“That's why we called it ourDarth Vader nativity scene,”Sorenson joked.

Started with only a fewdozen nativity scenes, the exhib-it has grown over the years tobecome one of the largest in thecountry, Sorenson said.

About half the nativityscenes have been donated per-manently to the annual nativityproject, including 200 by onewoman.

This year, 320 temporarilyhave been lent to the center, some by local people and othersfrom as far away as Rochester,N.Y., Best said.

“We've become well knownfor what we do. It's one way ofhonoring and worshiping ourSavior Jesus Christ,” Sorensonsaid.

Each year, Latter-day Saintsmissionaries wait until the dayafter Halloween to begin settingup the exhibit, a meticulousproject that usually takes abouttwo months.

The permanently donatednativity scenes are carefullyunpacked from storage boxes asare those personally dropped offat the center to be used in theexhibit. The dismantling of scenesbegins Jan. 6 and usually takestwo or three weeks, Best said.

“When you look over every-thing here — these nativity sets, after things are set up — you seebeauty and love,” Sorenson said.

He added, “There was a lotof love in making these and theyshow the love of Christmas, andthe love He has for us.”

Thanks, Danny Boys I am compelled to write

about the outpouring supportfrom Jeff Wiseman of DannyBoys Restaurant in ChesterTownship.

He is our sponsor for our13U Travel Baseball team, "TheDanny Boys Bandits."

Danny Boys hosted our all-you-can-eat pizza, spaghetti, bread, salad and beverages din-ner on Nov. 16.

In addition to all his regularbusiness, Jeff and his crew sup-plied over 112 people a wonder-ful meal.

Jeff's support of WestGeauga sports goes above andbeyond what we expected.

Our 12 local families ravedabout the fresh food and serviceprovided in the four hours wespent in the restaurant.

I hope you can find thespace to give Danny Boy's a Big"Thank You."

If organizations or teamsneed a place to meet and eat, this is the place to go.

Because we live in a town-ship, there is no city recreationdirector to help organize fieldsor practice facilities.

Support from Danny Boys ishelping us put that in place.

Search for Children WithDisabilities

In accordance with theIndividual’s with DisabilitiesEducation Improvement Act(IDEA) of 2004, The WestGeauga Local School District isparticipating in Child Findefforts to locate, evaluate andidentify all children with dis-abilities, from birth through 21years of age, who may be enti-tled to receive special educationand related aides and services, regardless of their situations.
