It has now been a year since Cheshire’s Local Government Re-organisation saw the creation of two unitary authorities, Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester. We are pleased to announce the continuation of our ‘Caring at Home’ courses, which are a series of talks on the different aspects of caring for someone at home. Sessions include guest speakers from Social Services, Age Concern, Alzheimer’s Society, home care agencies, and we also provide advice on benefits and legal issues. They are free of charge and include a light lunch and refreshments.

We will be holding two new courses for Summer 2010 in Knutsford and Nantwich, so if you would like to register your interest in either course, please call the Crewe office on 01270 257331. We can help with transport to the venue if required, and may be able arrange for someone to stay with the person you care for if you can’t leave them alone. We always round the course off with a trip out to a local place of interest. A course programme will be sent out with confirmation of your place.

The venue was the Children’s Adventure Farm

Trust, the purpose of the day was to have fun,

explore new activities, make new friends.

This year’s Young Carers Day, organised by the Cheshire Young Carers Advisory Group, was held on Friday 9th April 2010.

The day was funded by the Carers Grant, The Princess Royal Trust for Carers Explore More Together Fund and money kindly donated by Wilmslow High School through their fundraising activities.

88 Young Carers from across Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester & Warrington all took part in activities including, learning about birds of prey and handling some of the birds, bungee trampolining, arts & crafts, face painting, team games and a bouncy castle.

The day culminated in a barbeque tea for well over 100 people! Staff and volunteers from Cheshire Carers Centre, Warrington Carers Centre, Crossroads Care Cheshire

East and St John Ambulance were on hand to ensure everyone had a great time. This year we were helped along by the glorious weather, meaning that the majority of activities could take place outside.

The day was a great success, special thanks to Wild Wings Birds of Prey, PA Promotions (trampolines), the Play and Activity Officers from Cheshire East Council and all the staff and volunteers who took part.

For more information about Young Carers, please log on to www.youngcarers.net, the award winning

national website for Young Carers.

What is Work Focused Support for Carers?

Work Focused Support for Carers (WFSC) is a voluntary scheme designed to help people who wish to combine paid work with their role caring for someone.

You can choose to take part, and are free to stop taking part, at any time. Even if you don’t feel ready to work now but might like to in the future, you can still take advantage of the support available.

Who is eligible?

Work Focused Support for Carers is available to carers who:

· do not work or work less than 16 hours a week · are aged 18 or over · are not able to get help from any of the other Jobcentre Plus employment support programmes such as New

Deal or Pathways to Work.

Will my benefits be affected?

If you are in receipt of benefits they will not be affected by taking part in WFSC. If you find a job you are interested in, your personal adviser will be able to tell you how your benefits will be affected if you start work and help you apply for any in work benefits or tax credits if appropriate.

What help will Jobcentre Plus give me to find work?

Your adviser can help you with advice on training, finding a job, local childcare and local replacement care. Also, if you start work, your adviser can continue to provide support and advice.

What other support is available?

Jobcentre Plus may be able to help pay for things like replacement care while you attend appointments with the personal adviser, take part in a training course or attend job interviews.

Where should I go for more information?

To find out more about getting into work or training, you can: visit www.direct.gov.uk/carersemployment or arrange an appointment with an adviser at your nearest Jobcentre.

HOLMES CHAPEL AND AREA CHRISTIAN COMMUNICARE. WHO are we? Holmes Chapel Christian Communicare is a Voluntary Service formed over 25 years ago, as a result of a

meeting between members of the 3 Churches and the Health Centre. We now have about 120 members, about

70 of whom are occasional drivers.

WHAT do we do? Over the years, our main activity has become the Car Service where our volunteers drive people who have no other means

of transport to the Health Centre, Hospitals, Dentists etc. We also have a small Home Care Service and run the weekly

Minibus Service.

HOW does the Car Service work? Patients put requests into Reception at the Health Centre. These are collected daily by one of our Organisers, who then

finds drivers who can ‘do the runs’. Our drivers receive a modest mileage allowance to assist with running expenses, and

users are invited to make a donation to cover costs. These voluntary donations are our only source of income. Last year our

drivers carried out approximately 1300 journeys and covered more than 25,000 miles!

The weekly Minibus Service on Thursday mornings brings people from Goostrey and from around Holmes Chapel into the

village centre.

For our Home Care Service we have a number of Volunteers who will visit people who are house-bound or who will sit with

someone to give their Carer the opportunity to go out.

We are always on the lookout for new drivers – so, if you feel you would like to join us, or just for

more information, please contact the secretaries:- Anita & Dennis Eborall on 01477 532407

Cheshire Carers Centre manage the database on behalf of Cheshire East and Cheshire West and Chester council's. Parents and Carers who have a child with a disability are invited to register with the database in order to receive information, advice and support.

Registration is via a simple confidential form. If the child has not got a statement, or a diagnosis it does not matter - the more families who register the better as we use statistical (never personal) information to help shape future services and provision for disabled children. Subject to funding we try to arrange fun days and events for families to enjoy - once registered with us families would be invitied to such events automatically. We also issue a free newsletter to families 3 times a year.

KEEPING CARERS WARM IN CREWE AND NANTWICH

In March, Cheshire Carers Centre helped 50 carers on their way to staying healthy and keeping warm by giving them all a free slow cooker. The Carers of Older People's Project was lucky enough to be given 50 slow cookers by the Crewe and Nantwich Senior's Voice Group who are working in partnership with Cheshire East Council's Health Improvement Team, The Wishing Well Project and Wulvern Housing to promote winter warmth to vulnerable older people aged 60+ living in Crewe or Nantwich.

The cold weather can cause serious health problems in older people and there is a higher risk of catching a a cold or flu in winter. This means it is essential to keep warm, and eating well is a vital part of staying warm and healthy during the winter months. It is important that older people have a least one hot meal every day but due to the credit crunch and rising living costs more and more people are watching their money. Slow cookers are a safe and cost effective way of eating a nutritious hot meal throughout winter. Some of the advantages of using a slow cooker include little preparation is required, they use very little electricity to operate and the cost of running a cooker over 8 hours is only 17p! Crewe and Nantwich Seniors Voice Group's "Crock Pot Project" has been running for 12 months and over 200 cookers have so far been distributed. By teaming up with Cheshire Carers Centre in Crewe, the project has been able to identify carers either over 60 themselves or looking after someone aged over 60 who can now benefit from using a slow cooker. The carers attended an hour workshop on how to use the cooker, delivered by members of the Seniors Voice Group at Beechmere in Crewe , including recipe ideas and a chance to taste some delicious stews all cooked in a slow cooker!
