The invitation comes on the heels of the passage of Senate Bill 146 which “designates the third Saturday in March of each year as Cherry Blossom Day in Oregon” Cherry Blossom Day is a tribute to the importance of the cherry industry in Oregon, to the cherry trees in bloom at the Capitol Mall, and to the influence of the Japaneese culture in Oregon. This celebration is in honor of the cherry industry and its importance to the state of Oregon, to the flowering Akebono cherry trees on the Capitol Mall, and it also celebrates the influence and importance of the Japanese culture in Oregon.” She has invited local diplomats from The Dalles to represent Northwest Cherry Festival during the celebration at the Capitol. Ferrioli said, “The 38th Northwest Cherry Festival is one of Oregon’s great community celebrations. It features the crowning of King Bing, Queen Anne and Royal Anne and Andy, a grand parade, live music, cruise-in and activities for the whole family. With a 2017 underway, the Chamber has been involved in a bit of re-structuring of some of our positions in order to more effectively fulfill our mission and better serve our members and community. Accordingly, we are proud to announce that Camille Terry is now our new Director of Events and Communications. She will represent The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce at the Oregon Festival and Events Association (OFEA) convention being held March 6th – 8th in Seaside, Oregon, to bring top notch resources for making our events the best they can be. Congratulations and thank you, Camille, for the outstanding work you do for the Chamber and our community! We are pleased to welcome Trella Boone Coy as the new Office Manager and Visitor Services for our team. We are also currently in the process of hiring a full time Membership Specialist who will work directly with our current members and their needs, as well as the recruitment of new members.

We are fully engaged in planning for our up-coming 38th annual Cherry Festival and excited about the year ahead. We truly consider it a privilege to serve such a great community!

It is looking like spring!A new season is just about upon us. Spring makes me think of a fresh start. The sunshine gives me a sense of renewed energy.I am excited to announce that the Chamber building façade improvement has been approved by the urban renewal board. You will see a new face on the Chamber soon!Since last month’s newsletter, The Dalles has been considered one of the 25 best places to visit in Oregon by VacationIdea. We have also been on TV twice this year. Once on Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmerman and on Frontier Unlimited with Gary Lewis. The Dalles will also be on My Classic Car later this year. I am also excited to share that Senate Bill 146 “designates the third Saturday in March of each year as Cherry Blossom Day.” Ore. Senate Republican Leader Ted Ferrioli, of John Day has invited members of the Legislature and all Oregonians to the 38th Annual Northwest Cherry Festival. In the February newsletter, I told you about the book, The Energy Bus, by Jon Gordon. This month I would like to share with you the book, Essentialism, by Greg McKeown.“Essentialism is more than a time-management strategy or a productivity technique. It is a systematic discipline for discerning what is absolutely essential, then eliminating everything that is not, so we can make the highest possible contribution toward the things that really matter.”“Essentialism isn’t about getting more done in less time. It’s about getting only the right things done”“Have you ever found yourself stretched too thin? Do you simultaneously feel overworked and underutilized? Are you often busy but not productive? Do you feel like your time is constantly being hijacked by other people’s agendas?”“If you answered yes to any of these, the way out is the Way of the Essentialist.”I found this book very enlightening and would suggest that everyone read it.

Have a fabulous month!Cheers, Mindy

national, and global challenges and opportunities in the spirit of the Marshall Plan.” Hoey is one of just more than two dozen “Marshall Memorial Fellows” from around the United States who have been selected for the high profile role. Hoey will soon be meeting with leaders from several European nations during a visit that will stretch over several weeks.

Update from Representative John Huffman“Unbelievably, it is one month down and a little over four to go in the 2017 Oregon Legislative Session. I have had numerous hearings and even a couple of work sessions on my bills. On the House floor this Thursday will be a trio of bills honoring Medal of Honor recipients, and specifically, Bob Maxwell of Bend. Bob is a friend, and he is the oldest living Medal of Honor recipient at 96 years of age. He will be honored Thursday as we pass the House Concurrent Resolutions that are done in his honor and the honor of many other Oregon heroes.I have several bills from my legislative work group on trafficking that continue to make it more difficult and costly for people to abuse children by trafficking them in the sex trade. Of course, there is no shortage of bills that aim to tinker with your business model and take any remaining profit you may have managed to make. I hate sounding partisan, but every one of the anti-business bills are sponsored by people that have never owned or run a business, tried to make a profit or made a payroll. One challenging bill that will have a hearing this week is the “Predictive Scheduling” bill. This bill requires employee schedules to be posted some two weeks in advance, and It also provides a penalty payment to the employee if the schedule is changed. Another bill suggests that non-profits need to pay, or pay more in property taxes. Never mind the purpose of non-profit and charitable services and why they are structured the way they are.”

Trout fishing near The Dalles, Oregon By Gary Lewis

In the days of yesteryear, opening day was on a Saturday, but that is no more, because the Department of Fish & Wildlife simplified the angling regulations last year. Now, most of our favorite waters are open year round. It used to be that folks looked forward to opening day of trout season. Campers rolled in from the big city, stopped in tackle shops for bait and advice, then set up their canvas tents at campgrounds then drove back to town to stay in motels when rainstorms washed them out. It was a great system, but I like this better.Early last April I drove up to The Dalles and stopped in at Taylor Lake where about a dozen anglers plied the waters with Power Bait and worms in hopes of hooking a trophy. I stopped and talked to Stephanie Valencano who had an 18-inch rainbow on a stringer and was trying to get another one.I'd brought a fly rod and I took one look at the water and knew this was not going to work for me. Taylor Lake's visibility was about four inches. I'd need a lot of luck to catch a fish here. I would have done better if I'd brought Power Bait.I drove back to town to Cousin's Restaurant, had a late breakfast with friend, Rodney Smith, and then we drove west to Mayer State Park to fish a tiny 3-acre lake nestled in the Rowena curves of the old highway. It's called Bikini Pond and though I looked around, I couldn't see any bikinis. Maybe later in the year a person could have better luck in this regard. We walked the shore and prospected for hatchery rainbows. I was using a two-fly chironomid rig and when I figured out the right depth, was rewarded with a few grabs and a fish that stuck.A fellow fly-rodder worked some water on the other side and it turned out to be fishing guide Nate Turner, who, on his time off, was stalking carp with his glare glasses and wet flies.A lot of people start thinking about fishing when the buds show on the trees and the deer bite the tops off the tulips. That's when a person starts wondering when trout season is going to open. It's open!Almost all Central Oregon lakes are open year-round and the stream opener is May 22nd. The exceptions are Crane Prairie and Wickiup which open this year (and every year going forward) on April 22nd. In 2017 that's a Saturday! Or pick any Saturday and make it YOUR opening day.Last year, ODFW planted more trophy trout (one pound and bigger) in some waters. Expect that to continue for 2017. And expect holdovers to two and three pounds in these waters. Willow Creek Reservoir (near Heppner) should be fishing well in April and May. Up on Mt. Hood, the action will pick up at Timothy and Trillium lakes in May. Gary Lewis is the publisher of the Fishing Mount Hood Country and Fishing Central Oregon books. The small business of the month program is designed to recognize the dedication, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit displayed by small businesses within The Dalles. The goal of the monthly award is to highlight a small business and give them extra marketing exposure to aid in growing their business. We have asked Centerpointe Community Bank, as our Business of the Year, to select the Business of the Month.

The business will be selected based on overall customer service, their willingness to go above and beyond, and their overall impact in our community.
