• Chemwatch is an online chemical management system database
• The Chemwatch database allows the user to develop and maintain chemical manifests, search manufacturer or Chemwatch MSDS, print labels, obtain emergency response information and determine the hazards posed by the chemical.

Features of the Chemwatch database include:
•Inventory of MSDS •Storage of the manufacturers/suppliers/vendors original MSDS •Chemical Inventory for each Research Group •Generated reports e.g. poisons, Dangerous Goods •Information on chemical labelling and placarding •Classification of chemicals – Hazardous Substance, Dangerous Good, Controlled Substance •Warnings on chemical incompatibilities and where segregation may be required

Accessing Chemwatch
Chemwatch access via MCRI’s Intranet under the ‘Quick Links’ tab.
No login details are required.

Accessing MSDS: Manufacture/Supplier/Vendor
1. Ensure you are in the materials module
2. Click on the ‘Vendors MSDS’ button in the reports panel
3. Type the chemical’s name into the ‘Name’ box
4. Click on the ‘Search’ button
5. Select the first methanol option by clicking on the name
6. From the document list, select the required vendor’s MSDS

Accessing MSDS: Chemwatch GOLD (generic) MSDS
1. Ensure you are in the materials module
2. Click on the ‘GOLD MSDS’ button in the reports panel
3. Type the chemical’s name into the ‘Name’ box”. Click on the ‘Submit’ button
4. Choose the material that matches your search
5. The required MSDS will appear.

Step 4: Click on SEARCH

2.The generic MSDS for methanol
Emergency Response Information
Emergency response information can be located in:•Vendor and GOLD MSDS•Chemwatch
Vendor MSDS often vary in format and emergency response information may be found under varied sections, such as:
•First aid information•Fire fighting measures•Spill response information

Now it’s your turn. Using the link to Chemwatch access the following:
1.The MSDS for methanol with vendor Sigma Aldrich
2.Identify the emergency response information
Hazard Level Information – Chemwatch
The Hazard Level for a chemical can be found in section 2 of any of the GOLD MSDS, the hazard level is the highest number that appears e.g. for methanol it is 3 = high
Activity 3: Hazard Level Information – Chemwatch
Now it’s your turn. Using the link to Chemwatch:
1.Access the GOLD MSDS for nitric acid
2.Identify the Hazard Level
Printing labels for chemicals1. Ensure you are in the materials module
2. Click on the ‘Labels’ button in the reports panel
3. Type the chemical’s name into the ‘Name’ box’
4. Click on the ‘SEARCH’ button and select chemical
5. From the options available, select the appropriate label type and use GHS FORMAT.
6. Click on the ‘print’ icon (note must be printed in colour to comply with regulations)
