Precipitates in Double Replacement Reactions
Many DR reactions occur in water- that is, in aqueous solution
When dissolved in water, many ionic compounds “dissociate”, or separate, into cations and anions
If the rearrangement of the ions forms a solid it is called a precipitate.
A precipitate is a solid produced during a chemical reaction in a solution.

reaction?Double Replacement
1. Switch Cations2. Find Charges3. Flip & Drop4. for
Precipitate?Na3PO4 + BaCl2 Ba+2 PO4
-3 + Na+1 Cl-1
Barium phosphate is
not soluble so a precipitate
forms
Ba3(PO4)2 (s) + NaCl(aq)
Example
AgNO3 + NaCl AgCl + NaNO3
1. First, we separate the compounds into ions:
Ag1+ + NO31- + Na1+ + Cl1-
2. Next we “switch” the cations3. Last we determine if a precipitate will
form using the solubility chartAgCl + Na1+ + NO3
1-
Note that the AgCl did not ionize, because it is a “precipitate”
