Some of the research we do here

Dr Chris Jones and his group have shown hownormally unreactive aromatic C-H bonds can bemade to react. His group were selected tocontribute an image the front cover of thejournal for the issue that the paper appeared in.

Ongoing research

Dr Rachel Crespo-Otero was awarded£203,000 of UK Research Councilmoney to investigate thecomputational design of organic

single crystals. Light emitting materials suchthese find applications in display technologies, optical communication, data storage, biologicalsensing and solid-state lasers. It is hoped thather groups work will provide a way to predict theproperties of these materials.

Some of the work we do in the local community

Dr Lesley Howell took part inthe annual Festival ofCommunities event in StepneyGreen making slime, experimenting with milk, running paper chromatographyand providing children and theirfamilies the opportunity to gethands on with experiments.

Textbooks, Library & Q-Review

• It is highly recommended for you to have a look at the various different textbooks at the library before you buy any – no point in buying a book that is not made for you (you will never open it!).

• Lecturers may recommend some alternative textbooks through the year.

• Many books are available as e-books or can be obtained 2nd hand for a fraction of the full price.

• Tours of the Mile End Library will be available every 30 minutes from 10:00-17:30 on the hour and half hour; to join a tour go to the Info Point to obtain a ticket.

• Most lectures are available to view (Q-Review) after the completion of the lecture from the module homepage – this is useful if you miss a lecture due to illness or for revision purposes.
