Chemistry 112 Spring Semester 2012

Chemistry 112 is the second course in a two-course sequence in General Chemistry. The object of this course is to introduce you to some of the basic principles of chemistry with an emphasis on the relationships between the microscopic structure and macroscopic properties of matter. We will also illustrate the use of these principles in a wide variety of examples from the life sciences, from engineering and technology, and from everyday life. While it is a continuation of Chemistry 110, using the same text and building on the subject matter of Chemistry 110, it differs from Chemistry 110 in two important respects:

1. There are no required recitation classes. All of the class meetings will be of lecture size and there are only 3 meetings per week.

2. You will find much less carry-over of material from your high school chemistry course in Chem 112 than you did in Chem 110.

The format of Chem 112 places a larger responsibility on you to master the subject material of the course.

General Information CHEM 112 – Spring 2012 ii

TEXTBOOK AND OTHER MATERIALS: 1. Required Textbook: T.L. Brown, H.E. LeMay, B.E. Bursten, and C. J. Murphy, Chemistry, The

Central Science, 11th Edition, Prentice-Hall, 2009. 2. Chem 112 Student Packet (required). Available at the Penn State Bookstore on campus. This

packet has the syllabus, General Course Information, Supplemental Homework Problems and Practice exams.

3. The Chem 112 web site contains a syllabus, links to lecture notes, supplementary reading assignments, and multiple choice homework problems. You will be responsible for printing out these materials as needed. You are strongly advised to bring copies of notes to lecture, so you can listen, think, and ask questions rather than spend all your time copying down what is written on the overheads. In addition to these required materials, sample exams from previous years are also available on the course Web page. Please note that because of changes in the course, old exams may not contain precisely the same collection of materials as this year’s exams.

4. A suitable scientific calculator (one that handles numbers in scientific notation and provides log/antilog functions) is essential. Calculators with text-storage capabilities (such as the TI-81 used

in Math 140) will not be permitted for use on exams and quizzes. 5. Optional Materials: Hill, Student’s Guide to Brown, LeMay & Bursten, and Wilson, Bursten & LeMay,

Solutions to Black Exercises are optional; they are available in the bookstores if you wish to use them.

LECTURES: Chem 112 meets for three lectures each week. You should attend every lecture even if you think you already know the material. You are responsible for all course material and administrative announcements covered in lecture, including problem assignments, syllabus changes, and exam locations. Always read the material covered in a lecture before the lecture. Reading both the textbook and trying problems assigned from the text prior to the lecture is essential.

HOMEWORK: Homework assignments are given in the syllabus. The end of the Chapter homework problems should be done before lecture. The supplemental multiple choice homework problems can be done after lecture. These homework problems will prepare you for the graded on-line quizzes. Doing all assigned problems is essential for success in this course. If you have questions about the homework you can raise them during class or seek help in the Resource Room 211 Whitmore.

WEB BASED SKILL CHECK TESTS and QUIZZES (Detailed Instructions after Schedule):

1. Skill Check Tests. There are 8 Skill Check Tests (SCTs) available on line. Detailed instructions for taking are also posted on the course Web page. You will be allowed to take these tests as many times as you like; however, you must achieve 100% on these tests in order to receive credit. Deadlines for

each of the Skill Check Tests are given on the Web Based instruction page. NOTE: there is an early

deadline for these! You can earn extra credit by getting 100% by the early deadline. If you do not

complete the Skill Check Test by the FINAL deadline of APRIL 25, you will get a zero. There are no make-up opportunities for these.

2. Unit Quizzes. There will be 13 sets of quizzes that you will be expected to do on-line. These on-line quizzes will be graded. Each quiz will have about 5-7 questions. After doing the assigned homework in the syllabus, you should be able to do these problems. You will have a limited number of attempts for each quiz so it is important that you do the assigned homework BEFORE attempting the quizzes. (Note: each quiz will be unique.) Your grade for each quiz will be the highest score of your total attempts. There will be a deadline for each problem set as well. Once the deadline has passed, you will not be able to access the quizzes and there will be no make-up opportunities if you miss the quiz altogether or do not use all of your available submissions.

General Information CHEM 112 – Spring 2012 iii

EXAMINATIONS: There will be three evening examinations during the semester and a comprehensive final examination during the final exam period. The dates and times for the mid-semester exams are fixed; you must work out any conflicts that arise.

Three evening midterm examinations will be held:

Exam 1: Wednesday 2/1 at 6:30 pm

Exam 2: Wednesday 2/29 at 6:30 pm

Exam 3: Wednesday 4/4 at 6:30 pm We will make provisions for conflicts between these evening exams and other scheduled University activities; you must register for such conflicts in class when the request is made. The final exam will be given at the time and place set by the University in its final exam schedule. Do not make plans to leave the University before you know the final exam date for Chem 112. Locations for all exams will be announced in class, and posted on the web; please do not phone or e-mail for exam locations! You should bring to each exam your calculator, some #2 pencils, an eraser, and your student I.D. card. A periodic table and data sheet will be provided with each exam. Be sure you know your correct section number and student I.D. number and that you enter these correctly on your exam answer sheet. TEXT PROGRAMMABLE CALCULATORS (or calculators with any text storage capabilities) WILL NOT BE ALLOWED DURING EXAMS. MAKE-UP EXAM: A student having a legitimate excuse for missing any of the three scheduled midterm exams will be provided with a single make-up opportunity near the end of the semester. This make-up exam will cover the material for all three midterm exams. It is your responsibility to obtain permission from your lecturer to take this exam and to respond to the in-class request to sign up for this exam; this will be made shortly after the third exam.

GRADING: Your course grade will be completely determined by your on-line quiz scores, three mid-semester exam grades and your final exam grade. These will be weighted as follows: Basic Skills 5% 10 points

Unit quizzes 15% 30 points Three evening mid-semester examinations 17% each 34 points each

Final examination (comprehensive) 29% 58 points 100% 200 points The exact course point requirements for each letter grade will be decided at the end of the course. A

typical distribution for this course is as follows:

A/ A- 90% 180 course points B+/ B/ B- 80% 160 course points C+/ C 70% 140 course points D 60% 120 course points

There is no assurance that this distribution will be the same this session; however, you may assume that it will not be greatly different. There is no predetermined grade distribution for this course; if, at the end of the course everyone has a final point grade in the A range, then everyone will earn an A!

CHEMISTRY RESOURCE ROOM: The Department operates a Resource Room, 211 Whitmore Lab, which provides free help to Chemistry 112 students. It will open early in the semester and its hours of operation will be announced in class. The Chem 112 TAs will be available in the Resource Room on a regular basis. You are strongly encouraged to make use of this service as soon as you discover any need for help. Delay may put you too far behind to catch up.

Online Test Instructions CHEM 112 – Spring 2012 xi

WEB BASED COMPUTER SKILL CHECK TESTS INSTRUCTIONS

1. Login to ANGEL (http://cms.psu.edu) using your PSU access account and password. 2. In your profile (initial page in Angel) select the course, e.g., CHEM 112: xxxx. 3. On the Lessons Tab you will find a link to each of the Skill Check Tests. Select the link

for the test you want to take. Then select EXAM (at the bottom of the page) to take the exam. You will leave ANGEL when you do this (be sure to select OK) and enter the testing system.

4. Each time you request a test a different set of questions will be generated. Select your answers with the mouse from the choices given or enter an answer using the correct number of significant figures. Be sure to read and follow directions.

5. If you need a Periodic Table, select the link given after: Check the Periodic Table: a separate window with a Periodic Table will be given so you can toggle between screens. The magnified version of the table (that is slightly larger than the page) is clearer than the initial version that appears.

NOTE: DO NOT use the FORWARD or BACK keys on the browser, rather use the PREVIOUS or NEXT buttons given at the bottom of each question. Using PREVIOUS or NEXT allows you to go back and forth through the test to check or change your answers. If you use the BACK or FORWARD keys, your previous answers may be erased. Other strange things might happen… Sometimes the PREVIOUS and NEXT do not appear at the bottom, or you might be returned to the beginning of the test or to the test selection menu. In any case, you will use up requests doing this and the submission will not count. 6. After answering the questions and you are comfortable with your answers, submit the

test by selecting this option after the last question on the test. Once you have done this, your score will be recorded and sent to University Testing Services (UTS). You can no longer make changes or re-take that particular test. (However you can take another test in the same category if you like, which will generate another test with new questions.)

7. Once you have submitted the test, you will be given your overall score and feedback on the questions.

8. To take another test, select that option at the TOP of the feedback page. If all goes well, you will be returned to the ANGEL log-in page. Follow the procedure from step one to take another test.

If you have problems, please review the information in this handout to see if the problems (and solution) are explained. Please report any other problems you encounter to your CHEM 112 instructor or to Dr. Mary Bojan ([email protected]). Other information you need to know about the Skill Check Tests is on the next few pages.

GRADING AND STRATEGY SKILL CHECK TESTS

GRADING.

To pass a Skill Check Test you must get all items correct.

You will have as many attempts as you need to pass, however we suggest you never take any more than 4 tests in a 24 hour period.

It is possible to earn extra credit when you complete (get 100%) a Skill Check Test before the Bonus Deadlines given below.

Your Skill Check Test (SCT) grade for the course will be determined using the following formula, where #SCT = number of Skill Check Tests where you earned 100% and BON is the number of Skill Check Tests where you earned 100% by the Bonus Deadline. Skill Check Test Score = # SCT + #BON × 0.25 = total course points earned. The maximum number of course points that can be earned (by getting 100% on all 10 by the bonus deadline) is 12.

NOTE: there are no make-ups associated with these Skill Check Tests; you must earn 100% by the final deadline to get credit. The Skill Check Tests will not be available after the final deadline. You will get credit for as many as you successfully pass. You do not need to pass all eight (8) to get some of the course credit. SUGGESTED STRATEGY.

Take a Skill Check Test once or twice.

If you are not able to pass in two tries, go to the textbook and study the material related to that Skill Check Test. (See the table below for sections in your text where this information can be found.)

After studying the material, try the Skill Check Test again.

If you are still not able to pass, print out a copy of the Skill Check Test with your (incorrect) answers and GET HELP!

When you think you understand, try the Skill Check Test again. Even though you are allowed as many attempts as needed, we do not want you to take these Skill Check Tests dozens of times. If you know the material, you should be able to get 100% in one or two attempts. However, if you do not know the material, you will not learn it by doing the Skill Check Tests repeatedly and we tried to design the Skill Check Test so that you will not get 100% by guessing. Please get help in the Resource Room before you spend a lot of time taking these Skill Check Tests. The table in the course schedule lets you know where in the book you can go to get help in your textbook if you do not know how to do these problems. PRACTICING THE SKILL CHECK TESTS The Skill Check Tests can be used any time to provide practice in the Basic Skill areas that will be covered on the CHEM 112 examinations. Even after you have received 100% on a Skill Check Test you may continue to take the Skill Check Test for more practice and you will not jeopardize your grade, even if you score lower on a subsequent test.

Online Test Instructions CHEM 112 – Spring 2012 xiii

GRADING AND STRATEGY UNIT QUIZZES

GRADING

These quizzes will count for 15% of your Chem 112 grade (30 course points).

You will have access to these quizzes for the days shown on the schedule and you will only be allowed to submit the quiz three times.

Each quiz will be unique. Each test will have 6 to 7 questions and should take about 15 –30 minutes to complete.

Your grade for the quiz will be the highest of your three attempts, even if it is your first attempt.

There will be a total of 13 Unit Quizzes each worth 10 points. These quizzes may only be taken 3 times over the period the tests are available. Your score will be the highest of your three attempts. The quiz points you receive will be equal to the percentage of your highest quiz /10. So if your highest score on a Unit Quiz is 85%, you will earn 85 /10 or 8.5 quiz points.

Your Unit Quiz total will be determined by summing your 13 quiz scores. If you accumulate a total grade of 100 or more on your quizzes you will have the full 30 course points for quizzes added to your final course grade total. A total quiz grade of 80 would result in 0.80 of 30 or 24 points for quizzes in your final total. No extra credit results from accumulating more than 100 quiz points. Since you have the opportunity to earn more quiz points than you need, there will be no make-up quizzes if you are unable to take the quizzes for any reason.

A time limit of 60 minutes has been set for each Unit Quiz. At the end of the 60-minute time limit, the quiz will be automatically submitted if you have not completed and submitted the quiz yourself. If you do not complete the quiz in 60 minutes, you will use up both a request and a submission.

Beginning and End dates for the tests are given in the schedule.

STRATEGY

Completed the homework given in the syllabus PRIOR to taking these quizzes.

Take your first Quiz attempt on the first day the quiz is available. The questions you get wrong will give you an idea of what you still do not understand.

Review homework, notes, etc and get help in the Resource Room (211 Whitmore) or via recitations.

These are QUIZZES: they are NOT your homework. We expect you to be prepared to take them in a single sitting when you log in. Furthermore: there will be no Make-ups, extensions, etc. if you put these off until the last day and are not able to get three attempts completed. NOTE: Each DAY starts and ends at MIDNIGHT. The time of the attempt is the TIME of FINAL submission (not the time you begin the quiz), so if you start the Kinetics quiz at 11:30pm on Jan. 27 but finish and submit the quiz after midnight it will not be accepted. This will only matter if you submit a quiz after the midnight deadline on the completion date.

DEADLINES Each Skill Check Tests must be completed by the final deadline given in the CHEM 112

SCHEDULE AND COURSE SYLLABUS to receive credit. You must score 100% on a computer-based Skill Check Test to earn credit for that test. When taking the computer Skill Check Tests, a Periodic Table may be used for all Skill Check Tests and you may use a calculator for Skill Check 7 and 9 (Molecular Formulas & Structure and Concentration & Dilution).

Bonus points can be earned by passing a Skill Check Test by the Bonus Deadlines given in the CHEM 112 SCHEDULE AND COURSE SYLLABUS. It is therefore possible to earn as much as two (2) course points of extra credit by passing Skill Check Tests EARLY! WARNING ABOUT DEADLINES. Review these carefully to avoid problems with deadlines. All deadlines are at midnight on the posted day. DO NOT put these off until the last minute. If you miss submission deadlines or encounter computer problems at the last minute, extensions WILL NOT be given. If you are having problems with your computer that prevents you from taking the Skill Check Tests, try a different computer and/or go to a Pennsylvania State University computer lab. If you still cannot take them from a PSU lab, then report the problem to your instructor. The time of the attempt is the time of submission not the time you begin the Skill Check Test. Example: If you start a Skill Check Test at 11:30 PM on the due date, but finish and submit the test after midnight, it will not be counted. This will only matter if you submit a Skill Check Test after midnight on the completion (or bonus) date.

REVIEWING SCORES

Periodically, grades will be retrieved from the University Testing Services (UTS). Once this has been done, the first occurrence of your highest score will be recorded in ANGEL and will be seen in the Gradebook. Scores will be retrieved immediately after deadlines, but will NOT be retrieved in between, so if you want to check your score, but the most recent results are not shown, use the review option (below) to check BEFORE you e-mail your TA or instructor. NOTE: Once a test has been submitted, it is immediately recorded by UTS. SCORES HAVE NEVER BEEN LOST! Scores given by the review option will eventually be retrieved into ANGEL, after the Bonus and Final Deadlines. Please DO NOT e-mail your instructor or TA to ask why the grade is not showing up in ANGEL. Grades will be retrieved after the Bonus Deadline and again after the Final Deadline. REVIEW OPTION. You will be able to review your scores and complete Skill Check Test and Unit Quiz results by using the Review Option. To access this:

1. Go to http://cbt.uts.psu.edu (This is the UTS login page). This link is also given on the ANGEL Lessons page at the bottom.

2. Enter your user ID (access account ID) and password. 3. Select the course (e.g., CHEM 112)

At this point you will be able to review any or all of the Skill Check Tests or Unit Quizzes you have taken. On the main page of the Computer Based Tests, the Skill Check Tests and Quizzes will be listed but they will have the word REVIEW in the name. For example, the listing will say Skill Check Test Review 1 Chemical Vocabulary. When you select “Take Test” next to one of the choices that includes the word Review, you will NOT get a test; rather, you will receive a listing of the individual submissions and scores earned for that particular Skill Check Test (including the dates and times). In this way, you can “check” your scores at anytime, even if the score is not shown in ANGEL (which only happens after the Bonus and Final Deadlines, when scores are retrieved). If you have Skill Check Tests or Quizzes listed under Review, we also have record of them even if the score is not shown in ANGEL.

NOTE: If you select Take Test on one of the reviews you will not use up a request.

If you select “To take this quiz again click here.” (at the top of the review) you will be returned to the ANGEL log-in page.

COMMON ERROR MESSAGES AND PROBLEMS

(AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT THEM!)

Below is a list of common errors students have encountered while taking the Skill Check Tests. If the error you are having is listed here, you will find the solution on the course website or printed on the next couple of pages.

1. TOO MANY QUESTIONS 2. ANGEL LOGIN TIMED OUT 3. NOT REGISTERED or REGISTERED LATE 4. SCORE IS NOT IN REVIEW 5. CANNOT GET TO COURSE LESSONS PAGE 6. SAME TEST TWICE 7. CANNOT DISPLAY PAGE 8. ACCESS DENIED 9. POP-UP BLOCKERS

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. TOO MANY QUESTIONS

I submitted the Skill Check Test and I found that there were 14 questions and only 7 of those 14 were displayed when I took the Skill Check Test. This happens when you use the Back or Forward buttons on your web browser. It also seems to happen frequently to Safari users. If you have a Macintosh and typically use Safari, you will be wise to download FireFox and use that browser

2. ANGEL LOGIN TIMED OUT

If you attempt to take a Skill Check Test after your ANGEL login has been timed out, you will get the error message below. Login in to ANGEL and try again before reporting a problem.

Online Test Instructions CHEM 112 – Spring 2012 xvii

3. NOT REGISTERED or REGISTERED LATE

If you are NOT registered for CHEM 112 or have recently added the course, you may get the message above (User ID is not permitted) or the following:

"There are no records for your ID in the University Testing Services registration database. Please contact the course instructor if you are registered for the course."

If you receive either of these messages, wait 24 hours and try again. These errors usually occur due to late registration, or some other changes in your registration. Since UTS gets updates from the University Registrar once a day, the problem usually fixes itself within 24 hours. If you try again one day later and the problem persists, contact your instructor. Be sure to include your PSU student number, your access account ID and your section number. It is also extremely helpful if you copy the error message that you received and indicate which Skill Check Test you are working on.

4. SCORE IS NOT IN REVIEW

Did you use a friend's computer to take the Skill Check Test? Or did you allow one of your friend's to use your computer? Were they still logged in when you accessed the Skill Check Test? If so the Skill Check Test you took will be under their name. We cannot give you credit for a quiz taken under someone else's ID. Please be sure YOU log into ANGEL to access the Skill Check Tests. (It is a good idea to completely close your web browser occasionally and restart it.)

Important Note: Once you log in to Web Access, if you then "log" into ANGEL, you skip the Web Access log-in and go straight into ANGEL. If another person used your computer and logged into Web Access and YOU then go to ANGEL, you will enter the ANGEL profile of the person who originally logged into Web Access. If the other person is in CHEM 112, you will be able to access the Skill Check Tests, but the other student will receive credit.

Even if you do this accidentally, you (and your friend) are still responsible and technically both you and your friend are “cheating”. You WILL NOT receive credit for Skill Check Tests if you or a friend do this no matter what!

Suggestion: If you ever let anyone else use your computer make certain they are logged out. Close out your browser occasionally and especially after letting someone else use our computer. If you EVER take the Skill Check Test on a friend’s computer, make sure you get the Web Access log-in page before you start. Otherwise, your work will be credited to someone else!

5. CANNOT GET TO CHEM 112 LESSONS TAB

If you select CHEM 112 in ANGEL and end up in the Lessons Tab for a completely different course, this is a sign that the cache in your browser is full. Empty your browser cache, close all browser windows (on a Macintosh be sure to exit the browser completely) and then restart your web browser.

Page 18: Chemistry 112 Spring Semester 2012 - Penn State Universitychem.psu.edu/.../courses/syllabi/CHEM_112/112_Sp12_UP-Syllabus.pdf · Chemistry 112 . Spring Semester 2012 . ... comments

Online Test Instructions CHEM 112 – Spring 2012 xviii

6. SAME TEST TWICE

There are two reasons why you might get the same Skill Check Test twice. First you may have used the Back or Forward buttons on your web browser. If this is the case, your submission will not count and you will have used up one (or more) requests (depending on how often you used the Back or Forward button.

The second reason would be that your browser cache is full. To fix this, you must completely close your browser and restart. (On a Macintosh be sure to exit the application as well as closing all of the web browser windows.)

7. CANNOT DISPLAY PAGE

This message occurs when there is a server problem at the time. Students should report such problems directly to ANGEL. To send a report: In ANGEL, click Help in the upper right corner, and then use the ANGEL Help forms.

8. ACCESS DENIED

You have to close down your web browser (or at least close your web browser window that points to ANGEL) and log into ANGEL again. When you take a Skill Check Test, you "leave ANGEL". However, if a separate browser window is open to the Lesson Tab, it appears as though you are still logged in. But when you try to take a Skill Check Test, it will not let you in because technically, you logged out of ANGEL when you accessed the first Skill Check Test. Quirks of the software we cannot get around! Sorry!

9. POP-UP BLOCKERS

NOTE: If you have pop-up blockers enabled on your web browser, you will not be able to take the Skill Check Tests. However, you can enable the CBT window to pop up by either setting your browser to enable pop-ups for the CBT site or by holding down the control key when you make select the link.

In addition, there is a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions page) on the CHEM 112 course website that may be of help if you are having problems.
