Speakers
Joel Tickner, Director, Chemicals Policy and Science Initiative, Lowell Center for Sustainable Production
Dr. Joel Tickner is Associate Professor in the Department of Community Health
and Sustainability at the University of Massachusetts Lowell where he also directs
the Chemicals Policy and Science Initiative at the Lowell Center for Sustainable
Production. He directs the Green Chemistry and Commerce Council, a network of 75
firms across sectors dedicated to advancing safer chemistry. He is a leading expert
on chemicals regulation, regulatory science, and application of the alternatives
assessment in science and policy.
Joel has served as an advisor and researcher for several government agencies,
international agencies, non-profit environmental groups companies, and trade
unions both in the U.S. and abroad during the past businesses years. He served
on the EPA’s National Pollution Prevention and Toxics Advisory Committee as
well as the National Academy of Sciences Panel on the Future of Science at the
Environmental Protection Agency. He also directs the undergraduate environmental
health BS program at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He holds a Masters
of Science degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana and a
Doctor of Science Degree from the Department of Work Environment at University
of Massachusetts Lowell and for three years was an Environmental Protection
Agency STAR Fellow.

Tom Lent, Policy Director Healthy Building Network
Tom has 35 years of experience in environmental analysis primarily focused on
healthy and resource efficient building technologies and the health, environmental
and social impact of buildings, materials, and energy. Tom helped coordinate
development of the Pharos Project, the Health Product Declaration, the Green
Guidelines for Health Care (GGHC), LEED™ for Healthcare and the Sustainable
Bioplastic Guidelines and sits on a variety of other standards setting committees for
indoor air quality, green chemistry and healthy building design. Tom has co-authored
a wide range of studies of the comparative health and environmental impact of
building materials and speaks nationally on these topics.
Tom currently is responsible for the development of hazard assessment resources
and rating criteria for the Healthy Building Network’s Pharos Project, an online tool
for assessing the health and environmental impact of building materials, including a
Chemical and Material Library that aggregates authoritative hazard listings for over
20,000 substances. He also coordinates the Health Product Declaration an open
standard format for the communication of content and health hazard information
about building materials. Tom has been honored with the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency Region IX Environmental Award for Outstanding Achievement
and the U.S. Green Building Council National Leadership in Advocacy Award for his
work transforming the building materials market.

Denise Van Valkenburg, Design for the Environment/Sustainability Engineer, Herman Miller, Inc.
Denise Van Valkenburg, PE, LEED AP, is a Design for the Environment/Sustainability
Engineer at Herman Miller, Inc. She works with product development teams assisting
them in the implementation of Herman Miller’s DfE program.
Her experience includes coordinating product certifications, managing Life Cycle
Assessment work, researching less toxic alternatives, environmental compliance,
management systems and many other sustainability initiatives.
Denise currently chairs BIFMA’s e3 Standard’s Human and Ecosystem Health
workgroup. She has been involved with numerous committees involving product and
corporate sustainably including LEED committees, ASTM, BIFMA and NSF.

Clinton Boyd, Technical DirectorMichigan Green Chemistry Clearinghouse
Clinton S. Boyd, PhD is an independent consultant in the field of green chemistry,
sustainability and environmental health. Dr. Boyd is the Technical Director of
the Michigan Green Chemistry Clearinghouse, a project funded by the State of
Michigan. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Aquinas College teaching
modules on green chemistry & chemicals management in the Sustainable Business
Professional Certificate Program and a course on industrial ecology for the School of
Management.
He has a PhD degree in Biochemistry from Rhodes University, South Africa. Dr. Boyd
has worked in academia as a research biochemist studying the pharmacological
and toxicological effects of chemicals and other environmental factors on
neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. His research led him to the conclusion
that health-based outcomes should form the foundation and be the driver for a
sustainable future. Dr. Boyd now applies Design for the Environment, industrial
ecology, industrial biotechnology, life cycle analysis, green (sustainable) chemistry,
and biochemistry to enhance the design, development and use of chemicals,
materials & processes that have reduced impact on human health and ecosystem
health.
Dr. Boyd sits on the Green Chemistry Roundtable that advises the State of Michigan
on its Green Chemistry Support Program and is a member of the Green Technology
Steering Committee of SAE International. Dr. Boyd is a Joint Committee member
for the NSF/GCI 355 “Greener Chemicals and Processes Information” Standard
developed by the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute and NSF
International. He also serves in an advisory capacity for a number
of initiatives addressing green chemistry, chemicals policy,
bioeconomy, environmental health and environmental
justice.

Joseph Rinkevich, Co-founderSciVera LLC
Joe leads product development and customer relationships for SciVera drawing
on over 20 years of professional experience in industry and environmental work.
SciVera provides web-based software and accompanying processional services
to help manufacturers and their suppliers gather product chemical data and
evaluate materials for human and environmental health. SciVera Lens transforms
the efficiency and reliability of critical business processes such as restricted
substance screening and alternatives assessment. SciVera works with leading brands
in a variety of consumer product categories including toys, footwear/apparel,
automotive, and electronics.
Throughout his career, Joe has led successful startups and consulted to senior
executives on how their business can generate lasting value by integrating
environmental and sustainability strategy in all aspects of the enterprise. Without
exception, this work has uncovered the need to empower professionals across many
organizational functions with the reliable, cost-effective resources to make proactive
decisions about product improvement, supplier relationships and product life cycle
development. In addition to having worked with a range of corporations like Dell,
Nike, Walmart, General Motors and DuPont, Joe also supports government and
intergovernmental efforts on environment and sustainability as well as speaking and
teaching at several universities and annual conferences.

Gregory Howard, AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow, Environmental Protection Agency’s Design for the Environment Program
Greg Howard is an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow in EPA’s Design for the
Environment (DfE) program, and Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at
Dickinson College, Pennsylvania. After first studying astronomy and physics, Greg
trained in epidemiology and toxicology at Boston University School of Public Health.
His research focuses on understanding how multiple chemical exposures may act
together to cause adverse health effects — a key concern for communities impacted
by pollution. At DfE, Greg collaborates on EPA’s alternatives assessment for flame
retardants in furniture and on other DfE projects.

Alex Mlsna, Senior R&D Engineer Kimball International
Alex is a Senior R&D Engineer for Kimball International from the Jasper, Indiana
area. He helps to lead the office furniture business units within Kimball for
Sustainable compliance to Regulations and Standards, such as: FSC, CARB, Life
Cycle Assessments, BIFMA e3 level (Sustainability Standard), and State and Federal
regulations for established chemical constituent limits.
Alex is an active member of BIFMA (Business & Institutional Furniture Manufacturers
Association), and is the chairman of its LCA sub-committee and vice-chair for the
Human and Ecosystem Health work group.
Relevant experience and education:
Alex earned his Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Evansville,
and is a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Indiana.
Alex is also the Chairman of the committee working with NSF in development of
Product Category Rules (PCR’s) for office furniture products.

Margaret Whittaker, Managing Director & Chief ToxicologistToxServices LLC
Dr. Whittaker has over 17 years of experience in both the performance and management of
toxicology and human health hazard and risk assessment-related projects. She is currently
the Managing Director and Chief Toxicologist of ToxServices LLC, which she founded in 2003.
Dr. Whittaker serves as the project manager and technical lead of ToxServices projects for
the United States Environmental Protection Agency, international certification organizations,
testing laboratories, and consumer products companies that manufacture and test products
such as cleaning chemicals, fragrance agents, cosmetics, dietary supplements, food additives,
medical devices, pharmaceuticals, drinking water additives, and drinking water system
components. As project manager and technical lead for contracts with these organizations,
Dr. Whittaker has contributed to and/or managed the development of 500 human health risk
assessments, as well as hundreds of product-specific toxicology evaluations.
Dr. Whittaker is a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology who earned a Ph.D. in
Toxicology from The University of Maryland, Baltimore and an M.P.H. in Environmental Health
from The University of Michigan. Dr. Whittaker is a U.K./Eurotox Registered Toxicologist, as
well as a Chartered Biologist and Fellow of the U.K. Society of Biology. Dr. Whittaker has built
her career on a foundation grounded in leadership and adherence to details and timelines.
One of her first career awards (1992) was a United States Coast Guard Commandant’s Award
for Outstanding Civilian Service, where her “alacrity and tenacity” displayed while working on
projects associated with the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 were officially recognized.
In addition to her extensive program management experience, Dr. Whittaker has extensive
technical experience in hazard identification and non-cancer and cancer dose-response
assessment, including quantitative risk assessment (e.g., benchmark dose modeling for both
carcinogens and non-carcinogens). Prior to creating ToxServices, she worked
at two of the country’s leading toxicology and risk assessment consulting
firms (The ENVIRON Corporation and The Weinberg Group).

George Thompson, President & CEO Chemical Compliance Systems, Inc.
Dr. George Thompson is a toxicologist with 44 years of experience in chemical,
product and process hazard and risk assessments. He has been President and
CEO of Chemical Compliance Systems, Inc. (CCS) for the past 30 years. Under
his leadership, CCS has developed the largest relational chemical and product
databases in the world, and 35 Web-based analytical compliance modules, including
12 systems that utilize the green chemical characteristics stipulated in the NSF/ANSI
355 “Greener Chemicals and Processes Information” national standard.
Dr. Thompson has published 18 books on hazardous chemicals, dozens of peer-
reviewed articles, and thousands of reports for government agencies, academic
institutions, and industrial clients. He and CCS have automated product certifications
against trade association sustainability standards for commercial textiles and
carpets, and anticipate similarly automating compliance with the Global Reporting
Initiative (GRI) sustainability standard in the near future.

Sean Burek, Business Development Specialist GreenWERCS
Sean Burek is a software consultant with experience using automation technology
to assess the potential hazards within a chemical containing product. GreenWERCS
uses a comprehensive database of chemical lists to score a product based on
relative criteria set by the user. The program is designed to adapt to the changing
regulatory environment and incorporate chemical data from any source. This flexible
approach allows for multiple scoring models that vary depending on the types of
lists and chemical information used to assess the product(s).

James Ewell, Program Director GreenBlue’s Material IQTM Database
As a member of the original team that founded GreenBlue, James re-joined the organization as Director of the GreenBlue Chemicals program in September 2011. During his initial time at GreenBlue, James helped establish the Sustainable Packaging Coalition and also co-created the Sustainable Textile Metrics that evolved into the NSF/ANSI 336 Standard for the Assessment of Sustainable Commercial Furnishing Fabrics. In his current role, James oversees the expansion of the GreenBlue Sustainable Materials program by spearheading the development of tools and resources that compliment and leverage the CleanGredients platform and that are necessary for industry to identity and promote safer chemicals in the design and manufacturing of products.
In the intervening years between his time at GreenBlue, James was Director of Consulting at McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, where he developed and implemented criteria for designing and manufacturing sustainable products and improving corporate practices. There he worked with major corporate clients including Herman Miller, Inc., Ford Motor Co., P&G, Seventh Generation, Shaw Industries, Victor Group, Energizer and Replenish, among many other companies from a diversity of industrial sectors. James has also held positions at organizations such as the Piedmont Environmental Council, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the International Center for Development Policy. In addition, James has a long history of advocacy work in social justice and international development issues. James holds an MA in Urban and Environmental Planning from the University of Virginia, as well as a BA in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Mahya G.S. Wood, Associate Toxicologist NSF International
Mahya Wood has been with NSF International in Ann Arbor, Michigan since 2003.
She received her Master’s degree in Natural Resource and Ecosystem Management
from the University of Michigan and her undergraduate degree in Biology from the
University of Illinois. At NSF she served as an analytical chemist specializing in
HPLC analysis for eight years. For the last two years she has served as a toxicologist
with NSF’s Green Chemistry and Sustainability Program performing DfE and
CleanGredients hazard reviews as well as technical reviews for NSF’s sustainability
standards for furniture, carpet, resilient flooring, wall coverings and textiles.
