Milestone Masters Degree for PhD Students
• PhD Students can now receive a MS (Chem Eng) degree on their way to the PhD
• Students are eligible a]er comple8ng PhD “milestones” – Details on next slide
• If interested, please contact Rachelle – Ensure that all requirements have been met – Applica8on form must be signed by both the student and the
student’s advisor

Requirements for Milestone Masters
The student has been in the PhD program for a minimum of two full years
The PhD student’s supervisory commiRee has been established
The student has passed the PhD qualifying exam
The student’s PhD Program of Study has been approved by the supervisory commiRee
The student has completed all courses in the PhD Program of Study, totaling at least 30 credit hours, with an average 3.3 GPA or beRer
The student’s PhD research proposal has been successfully defended The student has submiRed at least one first-‐author manuscript, based on
the student’s research and with the student’s advisor as co-‐author, to a peer-‐reviewed journal. Evidence of submission (e.g. confirma8on email from the journal) must be provided at the 8me of degree applica8on. The student’s PhD advisor must cer8fy in wri8ng that the submiRed manuscript is of sufficient quality for publica8on.

If you are a First-‐Year PhD student (started Fall 2014)
• Establish PhD advisor and research area • Finish 15-‐18 credits of coursework – Core courses (average 3.3 GPA or beRer)
• CH EN 6353 – Fluid mechanics • CH EN 6603 – Mul8component mass transfer • CH EN 6553 – Chemical reac8on engineering* • CH EN 6853 – Thermodynamics*
– Graduate seminar – Elec8ve courses
• Take qualifying exam (offered May 2015) • Begin to consider supervisory commiRee members

If you are a Fourth-‐Year (or later) PhD student (started Fall 2011 or earlier)
• Perform second Teaching Assistantship • Submit second peer-‐reviewed ar8cle for publica8on • Submit third peer-‐reviewed ar8cle for publica8on • Present research at 1-‐2 conferences / symposia • Apply for gradua8on • Defend PhD thesis – Can be no sooner than 6 months a]er successful defense of research proposal

Required Forms
• Request for Supervisory Commi8ee. Due to Rachelle by the second year of graduate work.
• Research Proposal Form. Due to Rachelle upon comple8on of the research proposal presenta8on.
• Program of Study Form. Due to Rachelle in the third year of the PhD program.
• GraduaAon ApplicaAon Form. Due to the gradua8on office one semester prior to gradua8on. Students should confer with their research advisor regarding gradua8on date before submiong.
• Final ExaminaAon Form. Due to Rachelle six weeks before the last day of examina8ons during the semester of gradua8on.
• Supervisory Commi8ee Approval Form. Due to Thesis Office a]er successful comple8on of the final exam and approval of the disserta8on by the supervisory commiRee.
• Final Reading Approval Form. To be submiRed to Thesis Office a]er successful comple8on of the final exam and approval of the supervisory commiRee as evidenced by the Supervisory CommiRee Approval Form.
• Final Exam Form. Due to the Academic Advisor a]er the defense has been approved.
• Student Exit Form. Due to the Department Chair upon comple8on of the final exam, and a]er a student has fulfilled housekeeping obliga8ons as evidenced by signature of the advisor and Chemical Engineering staff

4th Floor MEB Student Area Renova8on
• 4th Floor MEB will be completely renovated this year – Improved HVAC – New ceiling, carpet, paint, student desks – New conference room – Schedule Feb–July 2015
• Students will be relocated to INSCC, EGI, Prof labs, other rooms in MEB – Students should be moved out by Feb 6 – Stay tuned…
