Summary Slide
SAFETY FIRST– HANDLING CHEMICALS
SPLASHES INHALATION INGESTION BURNS
SAFETY FIRST
DO NOT SMOKE IN THE LAB
HANDLING CHEMICALS Hazard Symbols
These substances provide oxygen which allows other materials to burn more fiercely.
Oxidising
Highly flammable
These substances easily catch fire.
HANDLING CHEMICALS
These substances attack and destroy living tissues, including the eyes and skin.
Corrosive
Toxic
These substances can cause death. They may have their effects when swallowed or breathed in, or when absorbed through the skin.
HANDLING CHEMICALS
These substances are not corrosive, but can cause reddening or blistering of the skin. Irritant
Harmful
These substances are similar to toxic substances but are less dangerous.
HANDLING CHEMICALS Oxidising
Concentrated nitric acid, HNO3
Potassium manganate(VII), KMnO4
Potassium dichromate(VI), K2Cr2O7

Manganese(IV) oxide, MnO2
Potassium manganate(VII), KMnO4
HANDLING CHEMICALS
Always wear goggles when working
with chemicals
HANDLING CHEMICALS Always handle chemical with
spatulas or forceps.
HANDLING CHEMICALS Do
– Be tidy and organised
– Support glass equipment with stands
and clamps whenever necessary.
- ie to make sure apparatus is stable
– Keep the apparatus where it belongs
after use.
HANDLING CHEMICALS Do Not
– eat or drink in labs
– leave paper near a Bunsen flame
– point a test-tube towards another
person
– over-tighten bungs or corks
– heat up sealed apparatus
SPLASHES IN ON THE SKIN
Wash for 10 minutes Under gently running
water Until no chemicals
remain
Seek medical advice
SPLASHES IN ON THE SKIN
IF chemical is insoluble Use soap Under running water Until the chemical has
been removed Seek medical advice
SPLASHES IN ON THE SKIN
Remove all
contaminated clothing Taking care not to
spread the chemical
onto anything else Soak the clothes in
water
SPLASHES IN ON THE SKIN
Seek medical advice Take the chemical in a
bag Or in a bottle to the
medical centre
SPLASHES IN THE EYE
Wash for 15 mins Gently running water Use saline eye wash Hold the eye lid open Seek medical advice
INHALATION Remove person to the fresh air If unconscious
– Place in the recovery position
Seek medical advice
INGESTION
If swallowed Rinse mouth Spit out
– Do Not vomit Seek medical advice
BURNS
Wash gently with
water for 10 minutes To cool skin To remove all chemicals Seek medical advice
