Which topics will be addressed at the 3rd Symposium of Sensory Chemistry? The symposium is focused on the analysis of the emotional perception produced by the new tech-nologies. These generate a continuous flow of in-formation that our sensory system processes, and our mind develops a reality in which we move, get emotions and make decisions. It is a significantly different reality from the one we humans have perceived until now, and it is a strategic compo-nent of what we call the “knowledge society”.

Before going further, could you explain what chemistry is and which are its applications on eve-ryday life?Chemistry might be defined as the science that studies matter, both the relationship between composition, structure and derivative properties, as well as its transformation into new substances by the relationship between matter and energy. As chemistry studies matter, it is ubiquitous. That is, we find it everywhere in our everyday life. When we cook (mixing and boiling condiments), when we move (biochemical reactions that produce en-ergy), when we dress (dyeing fixing), when we go to the doctor (clinical analysis)… Life itself is basi-cally an extremely complex chemical process.

Facing this 3rd edition of the Symposium of Sensory Chemistry, do you think it is necessary to hold this kind of specific events? In principle, my answer is positive. However, sen-sory chemistry is present in many other events that are not aware of the potential of the use of chemistry to activate our senses. Sensory chem-istry is dealt with in events about perfumery, food, wine, automobiles or telephones… Not di-rectly, but through the expression of preferenc-es. It is that part that we thought to be intangi-ble: what makes us prefer one product or other because of the colour, odour, taste, texture, as we match its features with our previous sensory experiences.

«Expoquimia contributes to clarify the role of Sensory Chemistry in the industry»Carlos Domínguez Horna has a PhD on Chemistry and is currently a research professor at the Instituto de Microelectrónica de Barcelona, in the Centro Nacional de Microelectrónica (ICM-CNM), part of CSIC. Doctor Domínguez Horma is the president of the third Symposium of Sensory Chemistry, which will be held within Expoquimia 2014.

CARLOS DOMÍNGUEZ, PRESIDENT OF THE THIRD SYMPOSIUM OF SENSORY CHEMISTRY

CHEMICAL NEWS page 3

Which is the situation of the sensory chemistry in our country and in the world? Sensory chemistry is emerging as a speciality within chemistry, although it is already well de-veloped in other sectors, such as enology (based on the sensory profile of wine as a product and makes it its main attribute in front of the consum-er’s preferences) or pharmacology (changing the usually unpleasant tast of medicines).

In the rest of the world, the situation is pretty similar. Sensory chemistry is too diluted within other branches of chemistry, and an effort is needed to clarify the spread of this discipline.

What can Expoquimia provide to the sensory chemistry, and which applications developed in Expoquimia might benefit from this kind of chemistry?Expoquimia is contributing to clarify, by including these symposia within the event, the role of the sensory chemistry in the industry. Through the vis-ibility that it provides for this field, industries in the sensory chemistry sector such as cosmetics, addi-tives, perfumery, painting, etc. can take advantage of a new productive vision and add distinguishing properties to their products. There is also a clear increase of the sensory approach in other sectors, such as health, detergents or automobile, thanks to the progress in sensory chemistry.

Which results do you expect from the Symposium of Sensory Chemistry? First we expect to make public the last progress in emotional perception and the sensorial mecha-nisms that it triggers. These processes are very im-portant in the consumer’s construction of reality, which allows a new and revolutionary perspective on the distinguishing features of a product and its competitiveness.

Secondly, it is crucial, in this moment of con-solidation of the discipline, to connect specialists in different fields in order to join efforts to make possible pluridisciplinari developments. Our ulti-mate goal is to present companies with new sen-sorial possibilities for their products so that they can provide not just more pleasure but also new ways to move consumers.

Becoming a member of ITW and join-ing together further enterprises in Germany we have sharpen our identity with our new Corporative Brand PanReac-AppliChem.

One of the key factors that define our typical flavour and success is our permanent review of all processes by our experts along the value chain, which optimizes our products and serv-ices to ensure highest quality continuously. Secondly, we are a strong chemical company that joins our Catalonian spirit together with German values to concentrate on that product portfolio and services where we are strong in and where customers can rely on uncondition-ally. And, finally, there is our local footprint. As a mid sized company with a local network of sales specialists and partner in distribution, we are nearby our clients and listen to them care-fully. By understanding customer’s needs in various applications we are able to deliver clear

solutions with success. Our partners in industry, academia and analytics rely on this for so many years now not only in Spain but worldwide.

Panreac has grown from a Spanish company to be part of a U.S. multinational. How has this transition been? With already a number of years growing with Private Equities, Panreac Quimica joined ITW with the fluidity of already well established proc-esses. Strong confidence in Panreac Quimica as a newcomer to the ITW family has been confirmed once again with Applichem GmbH aquisition and formation of ITW Reagents Division. During the transition period, now PanReac-AppliChem, we made tremendous progress in business ap-proach toward being a global player.

Our partners in academia and industries highly appreciate PanReac-AppliChem products in several fields of application such as laboratory chemistry and life sciences as well as excipients. Within our years in the market we have become standard of quality not only by following but ensuring the principal guides of manufactur-ing and delivery in order to meet the highest standards.

As a manufacturer of both products and raw materials, you have first-hand access to the re-ality of national and international market. What is the market situation today?Of course, chemical industry still remains a ma-jor contributor to economy worldwide. Central mega trends such as population growth, water and food scarcity, sustainability, energy use and climate change are still dominating that sector. The social economic recovery in Europe together with the political situation in Eastern Europe leads to more competition for the mar-ket players. Consequently, in fine chemical in-dustry focusing on quality and service will be decisive, along with other developments by highest quality product lines for specialized ap-plication, enhanced traceability of raw materi-als and reliable supply chain to our customers worldwide.

What are the current challenges your company has to deal with? And the future? This year we work intensively on capitalizing our synergies. We realize this as a boost in op-tions and chances that multiply our possibilities in chemistry and life science. By doing this we change our appearance and start with a new corporate identity in the market. Under that umbrella we will be more capable to serve cus-tomer needs in industry, academia and analyti-cal laboratories and deliberate energy for inno-vative products.

What does Panreac expect from Expoquimia 2014?We have participatid in this fair for so many years and our experience has always been good. We value the intimacy of the fair achieved through long years of good relationship of the organiza-tion committee and the Spanish market.

We benefit from the Expoquima exhibition in Barcelona to cultivate our good relationship with our partners. The more the Expoquimia de-velops in the global environment, the more we can fit together with our own global approach.

CHEMICAL NEWS page 8

The aim of the conference is to clar-ify when a product can be labelled ATEX and to explain what this name implies, as well as to convey to users the fundamental aspects of safety,

such as when components must have ignition source preventive measures. The conference aims to show the market the technical advan-tages of offering ATEX equipment, for they are safer, have tighter controls, better materials, and therefore more added value.

LEGAL OBLIGATIONFrom July 2003, companies working in ar-eas with an explosive atmosphere must fol-low European directives in this area to pro-tect employees from explosion hazards. ATEX name comes from the European directive 94/9 (Protection Devices and Systems for Use in Potentially EXplosive ATmospheres). This direc-tive was transposed into Spanish law by the Royal Decree 400/1996. The other effective di-

rective in this field is 99/92 which focuses on the minimum requirements for improving the safety and protection of health of workers at risk from explosive atmospheres.

The conference, presented from the practical aspect of the technique applied to industrial equipment and components, is open to the participation of exhibitors from Expoquimia. A committee has made a selection of the best proposals because the aim is to accommodate a large number of speakers. The estimated dura-tion of each paper presentation will be 15 min-utes. The content will be strictly technical, at-tachments or links are admitted, so commercial proposals have been totally discarded.
