CHEMICAL FORMULA WRITING & NAMING OF
COMPOUNDS
Write the chemical formula of the ionic compound that would form the elements:
Aluminum and oxygenMg and INa and SIron (II) and oxygenNa and polyatomic carbonate anionCa and polyatomic nitrate anionAluminum and sulfate anion
Write the chemical formula of the ionic compound that would form the elements:
Na and polyatomic carbonate anionCa and polyatomic nitrate anionAluminum and sulfate anion
Acids are an important group of hydrogen-containing compounds.
All BINARY acids or Nonoxyacids (Hydrogen + Nonmetal)
1. Starting with the prefix hydro-2. Adding the root of the anion.3. Adding the suffix –ic.4. Using the word acid as the second name.
Ex. HCl (aq) – hydrochloric acid
Acids are an important group of hydrogen-containing compounds.
OXYACIDS (Hydrogen + Polyatomic ion)
1. Identify the polyatomic ion in the formula.2. Change the suffix to –ous if it ends with an -ite.3. Change the suffix to –ic if it ends in –ate.4. Then, add the word “acid”.
Ex. SO3 - (sulfite) - H2SO3 (aq) = Sulfurous acid SO4 – (sulfate) – H2SO4 (aq) = Sulfuric acid
Write the names or formulas of the following compounds1. HBr2. H2CO3
3. H2SO3
4. H3PO4
5. HI6. Sulfuric acid 7. Acetic acid8. Chlorous acid9. Dichromic acid 10. Nitric acid
