We have introduced many measures to protect and enhance the local wildlife on our campuses. Chelmer Valley

Nature ReserveARU is fortunate to be adjacent to this 39 acre site running along the eastern banks of the River Chelmer for approximately 2.5km. The site comprises of unimproved grassland, old hedges, scrub, river-lined woodland, a seasonal pond and the river itself. The pond, known as the Millpond, can be accessed from ARU behind the Michael Ashcroft Garden where you will find an information board and map of the local nature reserve. The reserve is looked after by the Friends of Chelmer Valley Nature Reserve – if you are interested in volunteering with them visit www.chelmsford.gov.uk/friends-chelmer-valley-nature-reserve

Our four key objectives are to:• Increase interaction amongst species on our campuses• Engage our staff and students in biodiversity activities• Strengthen management of our biodiversity activities• Protect Biodiversity Action Plan priority habitats and

species on our campuses

Wildlife sightings We keep a log of all wildlife sightings on campus, our Chelmsford campus sightings include; coots, moorhens, mallards, swans, kingfisher, heron, otter, slowworm, grass snake, foxes, rabbits, canada geese, robins, goldfinches and blue tits.

MillpondThe millpond dates back as far as Elizabethan times. The pond had deteriorated over time but in 2008 it was restored by ARU to encourage habitats for wildlife. It is hoped these habitats will attract white clawed crayfish, great crested newts, reptiles, water voles and foraging bats. The millpond is home to many ducks, swans, moorhens and we have also had reported sightings of a kingfisher.

Wildflower plantingOver the last 50 years Britain has lost around 98% of its wildflower meadows. We are creating pockets of mini wildflower meadows to create new spaces for pollinating insects like bees, bugs and butterflies that rely on this threatened habitat.

LabyrinthThe labyrinth is an ancient image appearing across the world in many countries, cultures and faith contexts. Unlike a maze, it has a single path to the centre and out again, and you can always see where you are going. The narrow path offers a meditative walk; an experience that quietens the mind and may lead to fresh insights. The labyrinth is situated outside the Marconi building, its path is created from letting wildflowers grow up which will also encourage wildlife to the area.

Bug hotelThe bug hotel was the winning idea in a student competition to create a habitat on campus to increase the number of beneficial insects to the area. Some wild invertebrates, such as bumblebees and solitary bees, are declining in numbers in the wider countryside, so by providing a habitat for them we can contribute to their conservation. The bug hotel was constructed using recycled materials sourced from around the Chelmsford campus.
