The Excellent Service Award (EXSA) this year saw the highest number of award recipients!

With close to 2,000 recipients from 41 companies, the ceremony was held on 2 October 2014 at the NTUC Auditorium with Minister Lim Swee gracing the event as our Guest-of-Honour.

This year, also the 20th Anniversary of EXSA, saw two SuperStar winners from the F&B industry. RAS got up close and personal with Amos Ting from The Lo & Behold Group and Mohammad Saiful Bin Kassim from McDonald’s to learn more about their journey of service excellence.

Saiful“Fun is the best element”, says Mohammad Saiful Bin Kassim, the EXSA SuperStar winner this year.Indeed, Saiful, currently a Customer Relations Manager (CRM) with McDonald’s, said that his mission at work is to inject fun and create magical moments for all his customers. “I think all customers deserve a smile when they walk in through the door of the restaurant. Anyway, smiles are free!” said the cheerful lad as he broke into a contagious laughter.Saiful joined McDonald’s at the tender age of 14 and was with the restaurant until his National Service (NS). Upon completion of his NS, his supervisor recruited him back as CRM earlier this year and he is currently taking care of 35 outlets and providing service training to other staff.“I am thankful for the support of my customers. All these are not possible without the empowerment that McDonald’s has given me, which allows me to be able to provide extra services when appropriate,” grinned Saiful as he reminisces about times when he surprised customers with muffins when he knows it is their birthday. A passionate service provider who is not new to EXSA, the titles that the 25-year old received this year will add on to the four EXSA awards that he already has under his belt. “It is really a dream come true for me,” beamed Saiful after receiving his SuperStar award at the ceremony,” I hope that my win can inspire other service providers and together, let’s uplift the service standards of Singapore!”

AmosEntering the service industry at 31, Amos Ting is considered “late” by many. However, that did not deter the EXSA 2014 SuperStar winner from pursuing his passion.“When my guests thank me and appreciate what I have done for them, that is truly something that money is unable to buy,” says the 35-year old who is the Outlet Manager of Overeasy Bar & Diner, owned by The Lo & Behold Group (TLBG).Previously in the Oil & Gas industry for nearly 10 years, Amos took the plunge for a career switch upon the demise of his grandmother. The loss made him realised that he has been spending too much time away from his family in Singapore. He wanted to be home and pursue his passion in the service and hospitality industry.“I am grateful for the chances given by TLBG even though I came with no experience,” said Amos as he shared about the opportunities he was given by the company such as being a part of the team for the start-up of Black Swan and Overeasy.“I foresee myself continuing in this industry. It is not an easy job for certain, but it is definitely one of the most rewarding. And there is always something new to learn! Cuisines, wines, products, ingredients… it keeps me interested continuously,” said Amos with a smile. On the topic of mid-career switch into the service industry, Amos’s advice is to come in with passion and positive attitude, and the rest will fall into place naturally.

An insight to 5SIn March 2014, 30 participants from 10 companies headed to Beijing, China, to learn more about 5S. Involving both existing and potential 5S practitioners in the Singapore F&B industry, the trip is set for the former to learn and benchmark themselves against overseas counterparts and for the latter to discover the benefits that 5S brings to F&B operators. The group visited well-known restaurants in Beijing such as Hai Di Lao Steamboat (海底捞火锅) and Jiang Bian Cheng Wai (江边城外) and observed how 5S has improved the outlets’ productivity.

5S is a structured programme designed to systematically achieve organisational cleanliness and standardisation in a workplace. Using a list of five words starting with ‘S’; Sort, Systematise, Shine, Standardise and Self-Discipline, the programme aims to drive productivity improvement via operational efficiency and space utilisation. RAS is the main training provider for 5S in the F&B industry. F&B outlets that are keen to embark on the 5S programme are eligible for grants from SPRING Singapore. More consumers will be eligible to buy electricity from retailers of their choice

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) has progressively opened the retail electricity market to competition so that more consumers can choose to buy electricity from other electricity retailers at market prices, instead of buying from SP Services (SPS) at the regulated tariff.

Today, a commercial or industrial consumer with an average monthly electricity consumption of at least 4,000 kWh is eligible to become contestable. The threshold will be further lowered to 2,000 kWh from 1 July 2015 to enable more consumers to benefit from retail contestability.

EMA will be organising a seminar on “Helping Businesses to Reduce Electricity Bills” on 6 February 2015. At the seminar, EMA will share tips and best practices with businesses on how to lower their electricity costs. Participants can also interact with electricity retailers to find out more about their price plans and services. If you are interested to attend the seminar, please contact EMA via email: [email protected]

You can also visit the following website for more information on retail contestability: www.mypower.com.sg
