Unit 1 Day 1 Rebecca: Hey, Hikari. It’s quitting time! Ready to hit the road? レベッカ：ねえ、ヒカリ。やめる時間よ！出かける準備はできている？

Hikari: Almost! I’ll be ready in a few minutes. I just need to finish this off so I’m all

set for Monday. ヒカリ：あと少し！もう数分で出かけられるわ。月曜日の準備がすべて整うように、これを終わらせてしまいたいの。

Rebecca: No worries. The movie doesn’t start until 8:30, and I already bought the tickets.

Your boyfriend’s still coming, right? レベッカ：大丈夫よ。映画 8時半まで始まらないし、もうチケットも買っておいたわ。ヒカリの彼氏も来るんでしょ？

Hikari: Yeah, but he’s going to meet us at the movie theater. He had some business

over in Yokkaichi, and he won’t be back for another hour or two. ヒカリ：うん、でも彼は映画館で合流する予定なの。四日市で仕事があって、あと 1、2時間は戻らないのよ。

Rebecca: Oh, that’s a shame. There’s this new miso katsu restaurant near here, and I was

hoping the three of us could check it out before the movie. レベッカ：あら、それは残念ね。この近くに新しい味噌カツ屋があるから、映画の前に試しに 3人で行けたらいいなと思っていたのよ。

Jun: Yes. Well, I think so. Ramesh brought me a bagel and coffee earlier. But I don’t

Allan: Indeed it is. You know, I’ve been meaning to ask you, Hide. Your English is

Hidetaka: Fluent? Well, I’ve been studying since I was in high school. But I’ve never

Allan: Seriously? I think you speak really well. You use a lot of sophisticated

Hidetaka: Thanks. Actually, I get a lot of those from movies. I signed up for this

streaming movie service this year, and I’ve been watching English-language movies in the evenings. Whenever I hear something interesting, I write it down.

Mike: Ooh, onsen manju! Thanks. Actually, I’ve tried these before. I used to have a

really good Japanese friend. I would show her all the great things about America, and she would teach me about Japan ... especially about the food!

マイク：ああ、温泉まんじゅうだ！ありがとう。実はこれ、前にも食べたことがあるんだ。以前、とても仲のいい日本人の友だちがいたんだ。僕がアメリカのいいところをすべて彼女に教えてあげて、彼女が僕に日本について教えてくれたものだ…特に食べ物についてね！

Mike: Yeah, years ago. We kept in touch for a while, but I went abroad, she started a

Allan: Actually, I’m still gathering information from our partner institutions, so I haven’t

good. And for history, I’ve just read a great book about the 1918 flu pandemic. Talk about scary stuff! You could try that, but you’ll want to carry hand sanitizer afterwards.

Unit 4 Day 2 Kanon: Oh, “Seattle Animals!” I saw that book on TV. It’s got everything about

Angela: “Safari City!” You guys have been waiting for ages to see this movie, right?

Kanon: That sounds great! Could we turn off the lights? It’ll be just like a movie

Angela: OK. But let’s leave that small one on, so you don’t hurt your eyes. アンジェラ：いいわよ。でも目を悪くしないように、あの小さな灯りはつけておきましょうね。



Unit 5 Day 1 Mr. Chow: So, what are your and Allan’s roles, specifically? チョウ氏：それで、あなたとアランの具体的な役割は何ですか。

Hikari: Our primary task is promoting the graduate studies program. We attend

educational fairs in Japan and abroad, distribute literature, and so on. In a nutshell, raising awareness.

best students spoke up and made lots of mistakes at first, but they improved the quickest. They weren’t worried about making mistakes—they just learned from them and moved on.

Student: Well, my friend spent some time here. He said living in a country with such a

long history was really inspiring. Also, I thought the experience would be beneficial for my career.

Rei: The one on Wednesday night? That seems really interesting. But I saw the

books in the bookstore and it looked kind of hard! How is it? レイ：水曜日の夜の？それはとてもおもしろそうね。でも、本屋さんでその本を見たんだけど、

Unit 7 Day 1 Rebecca: My date’s in two hours, and I have nothing to wear! レベッカ：デートは２時間後で、何も着るものがないよ！

Rebecca: He’s a writer, but his day job is to refinish furniture. I was reading a book at a

cafe last weekend, and he sat down beside me and commented on the title. We really hit it off, and I ended up skipping dinner with my friend just to talk to him longer.

Unit 11 Day 1 Friend: I had a terrible nightmare last night. I was in my apartment, and I heard

something moving on the floor. 友人：昨晩ひどい悪夢を見たんだ。僕は自分のアパートにいて、床で何かが動いているのを聞いたんだよ。 Hikari: Don’t tell me. Was it a rat? ヒカリ：言わないで。ネズミだった？

Friend: No, but it was dark, so I couldn’t see it very well. The sound came closer and

closer. It was really ominous. 友人：ううん。でも暗かったから、あまりよく見えなかったんだ。その音が段々近づいてきてさ。本当に恐ろしかったんだよ。

Hikari: Oh, no. Then what? ヒカリ：ああ、やだ。それでどうしたの？

Friend: I discovered that the noise was coming from a giant snake. Just when it started to

wrap itself around me, I woke up. 友人：その音が、巨大なヘビから聞こえてきていることがわかったんだ。ちょうどそのヘビが僕に巻きつき始めたときに、僕は目を覚ましたんだよ。

Rei: Yes! We had one when Kanon was little. It was a lifesaver, let me tell you! This

one has a noisemaker too. It plays music or soothing sounds to help your baby sleep.

Hikari: The deer around Nara are famously greedy. Some of them are pretty brazen.
