METALLURGICAL INDUSTRY IN INDIA

India boasts of one of the largest metallurgical industries in the world, due to its massive iron ore deposits and presence of several iron and steel plants and factories. The Indian iron and steel industry now is more than a century old, beginning with TATA Steel setting up the first integrated steel plant in Jamshedpur in 1907. In the 21st century, the country has emerged as the 4th largest crude steel producer after China, Japan and USA. The steel sector itself contributes nearly two per cent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) and employs over 600,000 people.

THE INDIAN ECONOMY

• World's largest democracy with 1.2 billion people

• India's growth will start to outpace China's within three to five years and hence will become the fastest large economy with 9-10 per cent growth over the next 20-25 years (Morgan Stanley).

• Investor friendly policies and incentive based schemes.

• India's economy will grow fivefold in the next 20 years (McKinsey).

• Large pool of skilled manpower; strong knowledge base with significant English speaking population.

• Huge untapped market potential.

• The urban population of India will double from the 2001 census figure of 290 m to approximately 590 m by 2030 (McKinsey).

• Progressive simplification and rationalization of direct and indirect tax structures, reduction in import tariffs.

• Robust banking and financial institutions.

MAKE IN INDIA

The launch of the flagship campaign 'Make in India' by the Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi in September 2014, aims to give global recognition to the Indian economy and also place India on the world map as a manufacturing hub. This is a major new national program, designed to facilitate investment, foster innovation, enhance skill development, and protect intellectual property and build best-in-class manufacturing infrastructure. India has set itself an ambitious target of increasing the contribution of manufacturing output to 25 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2025, from the current 16 per cent.
