1st DISTRICT MEETING – OCTOBER 8, 2019 – CANNINGTON LIONS HALL HOSTED BY CANNINTON LIONESS 

  The mee ng was called to order at 7 p.m. Cannington Lioness President Nancy McIntyre welcomed everyone and turned the mee ng over to DLP Cathy Holden. A er welcoming everyone, DP Lioness Cathy Holden asked everyone to stand for the singing of O’ Canada and a Toast to the Queen. We then held a Moment of Silence in memory of Lions and Lioness who have served, followed by the Lioness Grace.  A er being seated, 1st DVP Lioness Jill Cockerell introduced the Head Table and Dignitaries. We then enjoyed a delicious potluck dinner prepared by the Cannington Lioness. DLP Cathy thanked the Cannington Lioness, and everyone showed their apprecia on by giving a round of applause to the Cannington Lioness.  ROLL CALL The District mee ng resumed at 8 p.m. with roll call. The following a endance: Ajax – 4 Lioness & 2 Guests; Beaverton – 0; Cannington – 10 Lioness; Minden – 5 Lioness, 1 Liaison, & 1 Guest; Newmarket – 4 Lioness; Omemee – 4 Lioness; Pefferlaw – 7 Lioness & 1 Guest; Richvale – 6 Lioness & 1 Liaison.  GUEST SPEAKER Lion J.C. Lagrange PDG and IPDLP Suzanne Best joined forces to have both Lions and Lioness work together on the same project, LCCKF. The eight Lioness Clubs in District A‐16 raised over $15,000, and with District A‐16 Lions Clubs, a total of $47,597.05 was raised for LCCKF. Lion J.C. said it was a lovely year with support from both Lions and Lioness. He thanked IPDLP Suzanne, and said great things happen when Lions and Lioness work together. We are stronger together than separate. PMDAP Lioness Elaine Umphrey accepted the cheque on behalf of LCCKF. Lioness Elaine thanked everyone, and said it was beyond her expecta ons at the renova ons that have been done at Camp Kirk. IPDLP Suzanne Best thanked PMDAP Lioness Elaine Umphrey for her hard work for LCCKF.  MINUTES OF LAST MEETING 1st DVP Lioness Micheline Lush (Ajax) made the mo on to approve the minutes, as distributed, from the Conven on Mee ng, at the Best Western Plus in Oshawa, on April 27, 2019. Mo on seconded by MD”A” President Lioness Judy McLellan (Newmarket). Carried.

CORRESPONDENCE There was no correspondence.  TREASURER’S REPORT PMDAP Lioness Debbie Robinson presented the budget for 2019 – 2020. Lioness Lynne Lester (Pefferlaw) made the mo on to accept the balanced budget for 2019 – 2020. PDLP Fiona Fraser (Newmarket) seconded the mo on. Carried. Lioness Debbie Robinson presented the treasurer’s report. As of September 30, 2019, there was a beginning balance of $3,599.89. There was revenue of $224.65, expenses of $156.40, dona on of $25 from Cannington Lioness to the President’s Project, leaving a balance of $3,693.14. PMDAP Lioness Kelly Moore (Minden) made the mo on to accept the treasurer’s report, seconded by IPDLP Suzanne Best (Minden). Carried.  PRESIDENT’S UPDATE Stouffville Lions donated $200 to the District President’s Project. DLP Cathy gave the cheque to District Treasurer, Lioness Debbie Robinson. DLP Cathy reported she has a ended the following: Minden Lioness Club, Cabinet mee ng in Haliburton, Execu ve mee ng in Cannington, MD”A” mee ng in Markham, Camp Kirk mee ng in Kirkfield, Camp Kirk Pot Luck in Kirkfield, Kirkfield Joint Zone mee ng, and Markham Joint Zone mee ng. Lioness Cathy circulated pamphlets explaining about her District Project, GIFT (Group for the Improvement of Intes nal Func on and Treatment). Cathy’s nephew was born in 2006, with his bowel on the outside of his body. He had to undergo surgeries to correct this. Dr. Paul Wales was able to fix the bowel, and Cathy’s nephew now has what is called a “short gut”. His bowel is horizontal instead of up and down. He is now thirteen years old and doesn’t need more surgery. To raise money for her project, Lioness Cathy will be selling  ckets for the following prizes; a barbecue, a leaf blower, a Pandora bracelet with Lion King charms, an afaghan, and a wall plaque.  VP REPORTS & COMMITTEEE REPORTS 1st DVP Lioness Jill Cockerell reported the following: September 23rd she visited Ajax Lioness; September 24th she a ended Region 33 Joint Zone Advisory mee ng; October 2nd she had her official visit with the Richvale Lioness; October 7th she a ended the Stouffville Lions Club; and will do her official visit next week with Pefferlaw Lioness. (Full report is a ached to the minutes).  PMDAP Lioness Debbie Robinson needs a Lioness club to host Club Officers’ Training.  2nd DVP Lioness Micheline Lush had nothing to report.  Food Bank – Lioness Susan Hodges had PDLP Tina Cawthorne draw the name of the club for the donated food for the Food Bank. There were only three names, and the winning club was Omemee Lioness. Sweatshirts – Lioness Nancy McIntyre reported orders for 5 summer‐weight golf shirts. Two have been paid for, and the money given to the District Treasurer at the Changeover Mee ng last August.  The money for the purchase of one XL hoodie, 1 3XL heavier shirt, and 1 L summer weight shirt was turned in to the District Treasurer at the Changeover Mee ng last August. (Full report is a ached to these minutes). Lioness Nancy sold two Lioness shirts this evening. Get Well/Memoriam – PDLP Glenda Swiderski reported, since July 1, 2019, she has sent one card – a sympathy card to PDLP Lioness Terry Windsor for the loss of her son. LFC (CVC) – Lioness Terry Mason had a canister circula ng this evening. $49 was raised for Dog Guides this evening.

 OLD BUSINESS At the District Conven on last April, PDLP Fiona Fraser put out the challenge for eyeglasses. Lioness June Tsuji (Richvale) took up the challenge with the dona on of 216 pairs of eyeglasses. Great work Lioness June!!!       NEW BUSINESS IPDLP Suzanne Best proxied PMDAP Debbie Robinson to act on her behalf while she is absent. IPMDAP Lioness Karen Jackson reported that every Lioness club in District A‐16 will receive a package from Lioness Rosemary Kennedy. This will give the insurance company a be er idea of the club’s ac vi es and number of members per club. Lion Ray Howle  PDG reported the next District A‐16 Conven on will be held in Peterborough at the Holiday Inn, April 17 – 19, 2020. We will be celebra ng 100 years of Lionism in Canada.   LIONESS LIAISON REPORT Lion Bryan Carey said it is amazing the number of hours Lioness put in each month. He is not sure if he has all the reports that have been sent to him. He is not a computer guy, but he is learning. He has his printer working, his computer working, and he is on “cloud nine”. He is having lots of fun with being Lioness Liaison.  GOVERNOR’S REMARKS Governor Lion Debbie Dawson reported she has a ended four Joint Zone Mee ngs in the last two weeks. She thanked the Lioness who a ended them also. She said, she was once a Lioness, but today she is both a Lioness and a Lion.  She told the members that December 14th is Diabe c Day and to plan to do something that day for diabetes. In 2020 Lionism in Canada will be celebra ng 100 years. Lion Debbie wants Lions to send cards to Lioness, and for Lioness to send cards to Lions.  The aim for LFC project this year is $30,000. November 3, 2019, a celebra on will be held at the Mt. Albert Lions Hall to thank Lion Tom Gordon and his wife, Lion Gillian, for their service. Cabinet of A‐16 voted to support the Lioness in District A‐16. Our many differences make us stronger!   CLUB PROMOTIONS Pefferlaw Lioness – cra  and hobby sale on Oct. 26, 2019 – 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Pefferlaw Lions Hall. Omemee Lioness – cra  and bake sale on Nov. 2, 2019 – 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Corona on Hall. Newmarket Lioness – Pointse a Sale – there will be order forms at the next District Mee ng. Spring Fling – “Teddy Bear Picnic” ‐ March 25, 2020 at the Pefferlaw Lions Hall.  50/50 DRAW/DOOR PRIZES Congratula ons Lioness Janice O’Reilly (Omemee) with the winning  cket for $91.50.  Congratula ons to the winners of the many door prizes!

DLP Cathy Holden reminded clubs to bring their contribu ons for the baskets at “Laugh & Learn” to the District Mee ng in November.   The next District Mee ng will be on November 5, 2019 at Rouge Wood Community Centre.  2nd DVP Lioness Micheline Lush moved the mee ng be adjourned at 8:55 p.m.  Everyone joined in singing the Lioness Song.

P.Z.C. JIM DICEMAN AWARD (Service)

RULES 1. Lioness Clubs will choose one or more of their best activities for consideration. 2. The time frame for having completed these activities will be from April 1st of one year until the following

March 31. Submissions should be made to ALL THREE judges prior to April 1st unless otherwise announced by District Lioness President. (See Directory for judges)

3. Activities are to represent a service provided by the Lioness Club to an individual or individuals within

the community with no profit being realized by the Club. 4. The Lioness Secretary will briefly report on this activity. The report should state the effect that the

activity will have on the individual or individuals for whom the service was performed and whether the service is long term or short term. Submit any newspaper clippings or articles that gave the activity recognition in the community showing the Lioness at work.

5. The judges for this award will be the District A-16 Lion/Lioness Liaison and two (2) Lions to be selected

by him; one Lion from a Lions Club with a Lioness Club and one Lion from a Lions Club without a Lioness Club.

6. An award, along with a keeper plaque will be presented by the District at A-16 Convention. Presenter

will describe the winning service activity.

P.D.G. EARLE PILKEY AWARD (Parade)

RULES 1. A Lioness Club may enter any category, (float, marching unit, etc.) of the District A-16 Convention

Parade. This award will be given to the Lioness Club with the best overall entry. 2. The judging will be done by the judges on the reviewing stand.

DOREEN HILGARTNER FELLOWSHIP PIN

The Ajax Lioness Club is sponsoring an award at the District Level called the DOREEN HILGARTNER FELLOWSHIP PIN to promote fellowship, goodwill and harmony. THIS AWARD MAY BE EARNED MORE THAN ONCE. The criteria for receiving this prestigious pin are as follows; 1. A member of a Lioness Club must make one visitation to each club in the District within a maximum of

any two-year period, ending no later than March 31st. 2. Club visitations consist of one general meeting, per night. District Officers and District Chairpersons on

official visits are not eligible. District meetings or special events may not be used. 3. To show compliance, the card below may be photocopied and distributed to participating members. At

each visitation, the card must be signed and dated by the Club President or representative. 4. When all visits are completed, the Club Secretary will mail the card to the Ajax Club Secretary on behalf

of each participating Lioness. The Ajax Secretary will notify the District Lioness Secretary of the names and clubs of the awardees. Cards must be received by April 1st unless otherwise announced by Ajax Lioness Club, in order to be considered for pin presentation at District A-16 Convention.

ANNE SHEARER PARTICIPATION AWARD (information)

a) There shall be two divisions to this award; one for a Club with a membership of 15 or less, the other for a Club with a membership of 16 or more. Membership will be taken from the July 1st Quarterly Report submitted during the current time span of this contest.

b) The time span of this award shall be from April 1st to March 31st unless otherwise announced by District

Lioness President. c) A copy of this report must be sent to the District Lioness President, 1st and 2nd Vice District Presidents,

Hugs and Mewsings editors, and District Lion/Lioness Liaison no later than the 5th of the month following the month reported.

d) Judging of this award will be completed by the District President and Vice Presidents, with consultation,

during the time span of this contest. e) A plaque along with a keeper plaque will be presented to the winner of each division at our District A-16

Convention. f) SCORING POINTS:

1. ACTIVITY ATTENDANCE –(10 points per member per activity to a maximum of 50 points per activity)

Shall include any of the following: - -any certified Lioness Club inter-club function other than your own. -a new Lioness Club’s Certification Night, Laugh & Learn, District Convention. -participation in a parade representing your Lioness Club or District -Lioness District Meetings & Executive meetings,

-Lioness Training School, LCCKF Board Meetings, or LCCKF Functions -a Lions/Lioness special event, and M.D.’A’ functions 2. INTER-CLUB MEETING ATTENDANCE –(10 points per member per visitation to

a maximum of 50 points per same) The District Lioness President and Vice Presidents are not counted while on their Official Visits.

-at a certified Lioness Club’s regular meeting other than your own; one visit per year per club to count.

3. SPONSORING INTER-CLUB EVENT –one only per year to count 100 pts. examples; District

meeting, Club Officer’s Training – Sharpen Your Skills, Spring Fling, etc. 4. NEW/DROPPED MEMBERS –as per report sheet (DROP –10, NEW +50) No penalty for member dropped due to illness or death. 5. CLUB MEETING ATTENDANCE –100% of active membership at regular meetings will count

100 points; 80% attendance at regular meetings will count 75 points; 70% will count 50 points, less than 70% does not score.

ANNE SHEARER PARTICIPATION AWARD (information) cont’d 6. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT – No financial gain (20 points per member-MAXIMUM 100

POINTS for each event during the month) – members to be involved as Lioness Club members only. and not as members of any other group or organization. There is to be NO financial gain to the club in this category.

Legitimate service activities of the club (these items should be agreed upon by the membership and recorded in the minutes) These can include:

-Catering for Community Care, - vision screening, -Driving people to appointments -making book bags for local schools, chemo hats, blankets, pillowcases, etc. -participating as Lioness in activities at local senior centres or nursing homes, etc. -If functions with No Financial Gain occur more than once a month, they should be recorded

separately. 7. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT – With Financial Gain (10 points per member-MAXIMUM 50

P.D.L.P. SHIRLEY PILKEY AWARD (TRAVEL)

RULES 1. TRAVEL POINTS (i) One (1) point per Lioness member per kilometre travelled within District A-16

with a minimum of (2) members and a maximum of five (5) members. District Lioness President and Vice Presidents are not eligible while on their official visits.

(ii) If a Lion Liaison accompanies Lioness on a visitation, count an additional twenty-five (25) points, (Zone Advisory Meetings excepted).

(iii) If a Club has a District Officer who will be making Official Visits to other Clubs, twenty-five per

cent (25%) of the Club membership must accompany her in order for this visit to count towards the award.

(iv) In lieu of kilometres travelled, Clubs having two (2) members attend an official Lioness/Lions

function within Multiple District “A” will receive fifty (50) points per Club maximum. Liaison officer does not count if in attendance.

(v) In lieu of kilometres travelled, a Lioness Club who is hosting a District/Zone Advisory Meeting

may claim ten (10) points. Liaison officer does not count if in attendance.

NOTE: Recognized Lioness/Lions functions or activities only will be acknowledged. (i.e. Regular Club Meetings, Charter Nights, Certification Nights, District Meetings, Zone Advisory Meetings, Conventions, Sport and Social events sponsored by Lioness/Lions Clubs.)

CONNIE COULTER- DISTRICT LIONESS OF THE YEAR AWARD

RULES 1. Lioness Clubs will nominate one or more Lioness from their club whom they feel meet the criteria for

this award. 2. The Secretary/President will write a report on how this Lioness has met all the criteria and why they feel

this Lioness is deserving of this award. 3. The time frame of this award is April 1st to March 31st unless otherwise announced by District Lioness President. 4. Criteria: The Lioness must - a) have perfect attendance at club meetings with only two (2) make ups allowed. b) attend 3 out of 4 District meetings.

c) attend all functions sponsored by the District Lioness: Lioness Training School, three out of four District Meetings, Spring Fling, District Anniversary, and any other events hosted by the Lioness District.

d) support her club in all functions. e) show enthusiasm in all aspects of Lionism.

5. The District President is not eligible in her term of office. THE DISTRICT PRESIDENT WILL SUPPLY PROOF OF ATTENDANCE (SIGN IN LISTS) OF ALL DISTRICT FUNCTIONS TO ALL THE JUDGES.

6. MUST BE MAILED TO ALL 3 JUDGES BY APRIL 1. The judges for this award will be the Cannington

Lioness President, the District Lion/Lioness Liaison and the District President. 7 An award with a pin (donated by Cannington Lioness) will be presented at District A-16 Convention.

PDP KATHY YOUNG AWARD (Membership Growth Award)

RULES

This Award will be presented to the Lioness Club having the greatest percentage increase in membership. The time span for this Award would be April 1st to March 31st (based on April 1 Quarterly Report). This award will be judged by the District President. Example: If you had 20 members and brought in 2 more or if you had 15 members and brought in 2 more, the latter would win. An award along with a keeper plaque will be presented at the A-16 Convention.

In memory of Newmarket Lioness Shirley Williams

1. A Club may nominate any Lioness members from their club who meets the criteria.

2. The Secretary and/or President must submit, in writing, a letter outlining how this Lioness has met the criteria and why he/she deserves this award.

3. The time frame for this award shall be from April 1 to March 31, unless otherwise announced by the

District Lioness President.

4. Criteria: a) the nominated Lioness shall show care and concern for the members of their club b) the nominated Lioness shall willingly offer support to the members of their club c) the nominated Lioness shall provide support for their club in their activities d) the nominated Lioness shall demonstrate enthusiasm in all areas of Lionism

5. The District President is not eligible during their term of office.

6. The judges of this award shall be the Newmarket Lioness Club and all nominations must be

submitted no later than March 31.

7. A keeper pin will be presented, by the Newmarket Lioness, at the District A-16 Convention.
