Stories from Students & SAF program participants used the creative arts to reflect on their experiences, and share stories of outreach, organizing, & their hopes for change. We collaborated with Literacy Through Photography to lead participatory documentary workshops with interns, fellows, youth, and farmworkers in NC and SC, creating maps, photographs & letters to someone no longer in their life.

“Dear Ms. Villareal,It has been a long time since we last saw each other. Well now, many years later I am still here in NC... a few months from graduating high school. I continued to read lots of books the way I would always read in your class except now I read a little less since life has gotten busier.I have shared with a lot of people that you were the teacher that opened up a world for me by teaching me how to read. “Farm labor has always been part of my life. When I was younger, I never quite under-stood why some people did not value the work farmworkers do, and why sometimes farmworkers had to suffer violated rights. The answer is that we do not! Legal, undocumented, H2A visa workers, all of us have rights in this country regardless of our legal status. The key is to know our rights and learn how to stand up for them without fear. I feel like it is my responsibility to advocate for my people. “Well, I dedicate this to my uncles... because they had an accident in Orlando when they were on the way to North Carolina. And truthfully, I was very sad, because I saw them in Florida… I saw them one day, and then… well, they died in an instant, and then I was very sad. I dedicated this to them because it hurt me a lot that they left this world... It hurt all of us… Playing football helps me to not think of them. So I dedicated this saying to them: ‘You are the sadness in my eyes that cry silently because of your goodbye. I look in the mirror and I see your face. I have suffered because of days gone by. Finance ReportFrom September 1, 2015 through August 31, 2016, SAF received $766,888 in support and revenue: 38% from contributions, 46% from foundations, 15% from government, and 1% from sales, fees, & other income. Total expenses for 2015–2016 were $728,320. Program costs accounted for 76% of SAF’s expenses, while 19% went to administrative costs, and 5% to fundraising costs.
