Tourism Vancouver and Air Canada recently partnered to create a unique ‘Vancouver Specialist Amazing Race Familiarisation’ visit. Fifteen agents were invited to take part from the UK, Germany and Australia. They formed teams to compete in a race and complete a set of challenges in Vancouver, whilst learning about the city at the same time. There was a helicopter tour of Vancouver in store for the winning team.

There were over 500 entries for the educational visit and each agent had to complete the Vancouver Specialist Training and a questionnaire on why they should be selected. A draw of the best entries decided the final fifteen.

SCHEDULE 16

Check In is designed and produced on behalf of Air Canada by Johnston Associates (johnstonassociates.org) and Izio Design (iziodesign.co.uk).

We have enjoyed a great summer and hope to welcome you on board this winter too.

We offer more flights from the UK to Canada than any other airline and this winter there will be up to 63 non-stop flights per week to seven major Canadian cities scheduled from the UK.

Our schedule features four daily non-stop flights to Toronto and daily non-stop services to Montréal, Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver. We will also offer four weekly non-stop services to Halifax and three weekly non-stop services to St. John’s. In fact, our daily non-stop service from London Heathrow to Canada’s capital city, Ottawa is unique to Air Canada – no other airline offers this service.

This all combines to make Air Canada, Canada’s largest

domestic and international airline, serving more than 200 airports on six continents. We are among the 20 largest airlines in the world and in 2015 served more than 41 million customers. We are also the only international network carrier in North America to receive a Four-Star ranking according to independent UK research firm Skytrax.

We are now pleased to offer Premium Economy across all our newly refitted Boeing 777s as well as our Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet. Finally, don’t miss entering our amazing competition to win Air Canada flights and a five-night stay at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler (pages 13-14).

We wish you a very successful winter.

years of innovation

Air Canada celebrates its 80th birthday in 2017. Its roots go back to April 10, 1937, when Trans-Canada Air Lines was incorporated by an Act of Parliament to coordinate air transport across Canada’s broad expanse.

First World War fighter ace Donald MacLaren was hired to set up the TCA pilot-recruiting programme and attracted top pilots, including many who pioneered bush-flying operations in Canada or who flew during the war.

The hazardous Atlantic route was first charted during WW2 and TCA’s first crossing was a 12-hour, 26-minute flight from Montréal to Prestwick, Scotland, on July 22, 1943. An unarmed Lancaster – a military aircraft converted for civilian use – carried three passengers on official government business and 2,600 pounds of mail for soldiers. Slow, lumbering and deafeningly loud, these remarkably reliable machines were part of the Canadian Government’s Trans-Atlantic Air Service and could weather the battering on the hazardous route. Those first trips were uncomfortable for both passengers and crew, but proved an invaluable training ground for the company’s future transatlantic passenger services.

Over the past 80 years innovations introduced by Air Canada include the use of anti skid brakes in 1955 and the first flight recorder, developed by Trans-Canada Air Lines in 1958.

Over the years many famous people have flown with the airline, from Babe Ruth and Bob Hope to

Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and Ronald Reagan. No doubt they would have seriously envied those passengers who have been enjoying a good night’s sleep on the Trans-Atlantic flights to Europe since October 2006, when Air Canada made history by becoming the first North American carrier to introduce lie-flat beds in all Executive Class® cabins across its international fleet.

Canada also celebrates its 150th Anniversary of Confederation in 2017. On December 31, 2016, the countdown begins, with an official ceremony on Parliament Hill and a range of festivities taking place in 19 locations throughout the country.

In 2017 there will be year-long celebrations to mark the anniversary, including more than 40 tall ships sailing Canadian waters with stops in Ontario, Québec and the Maritimes. Celebrate with Canada in 2017, with all major cities within easy reach with Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge. Find out more at canada.pch.gc.ca.
