Chatter-BarksVolume 38 / Issue 6 www.ocodb.org June 2018
NEXT MEETING MONDAYJune 10, 2019
Ralph Orlando will talk about OCOD’S upcoming Trials also "hints for
doing well at the trial with your dog."
Dear members:
Is it me or did someone turn the heat up outside? Jeeez – I can’t walk to my car and back without needing a shower from all the perspiration. Aren’t we lucky to have a beautiful indoor space for our dog training?
It’s time to prepare for our annual July Obedience Trial. If you haven’t signed up yet to help in some way – please do so right away. It takes a village to hold a trial and we have gained many members and booked several trials for other clubs because of the great impression made by our building and our members.
If you are a newer member – I know what you’re thinking – I’m too new/don’t know enough to help. Not true. In fact, not only can you help, you will learn from watching. There is a job for everyone. The judge and the dog/handler team in the ring are doing the hard stuff.
Another way we earn money for the club is by holding classes and we are in constant need of additional teachers and assistants for Puppy, Basic, and Intermediate classes. We could fill more classes (more $$ for the club) if we had more teachers/assistants. If you have been through a Basic class, you know enough to become an assistant for any of these classes. We will teach you what you need to know, and you will become a better trainer for your own dog. And you can earn club credits that will reduce the price of taking an OCOD class. Please let me know if you are interested.
Finally – a specific job we need to fill. We need someone to oversee the occasional electrical or plumbing work that needs to be attended to. Most of the actual work is done by the landlord but we need a contact for these jobs – preferably someone who lives fairly close to the TC since it will involve occasional trips to the building. If you would be able to do this, please contact me personally at [email protected].

Pat Mozden and Sandy Bailey had the pleasure to meet with the Lions Club of Ormond By the Sea on May 15th at their weekly meeting held Alfie’s Restaurant.
We shared information about the Obedience Club of Daytona, our Military
Working Dog committee and our new Veteran Scholarship program. A few of
the group have previously used our services and had a wonderful experience. They especially loved hearing about our
military program and were surprised such a service existed.

Obedience Club of Daytona General Meeting Minutes May 13, 2019
Meeting was called to order by Pat Mozden at 7:04PM.
Sign in sheet was passed around and is attached to hard copy of minutes. 21 members were present and Susan Winters was our guest.
Wins and brags: were announced and any new ones will be posted in Chatterbarks if you send them to Joan. A round of applause was given to LindaS for the successful Dancing Dogs show last week. There was a full house.
Our program was presented by Kris Davenport after the meeting.
Minutes of the last meeting were emailed and so were not read at the meeting.
Report of the secretary: A single membership for Susan Winters was read.
Report of the Treasurer:
Kathy was absent and no report was read, but is summarized below.
April Income: ~$10.9K (Advanced Classes ~$2.5K and Eye Clinic ~$2.4K)
April Expenses: ~$13.7K (Rent ~$6.2K and Insurance ~$2.1K)
Report of the Board of Directors:
There was no board meeting this month because so many members were absent.
Old Business:
Agility Equipment: Claire made the motion that we purchase ~2.5K worth of new equipment. The list includes additional straps as required by new rules, a 15’ tunnel to replace one that is falling apart from weekly class use, magnetic gates to make ring entry and exit safer and a set of 2 x2 weaves for class use. Seconded by Susan Armstrong. 18 in favor, none opposed. Purchase of new trailer tires to replace the six year old tires is on hold. LindaC mentioned we might talk to David Segal about them.
Membership Chair: Cyndi Mimms, our new membership chair, will be keeping track of the membership roster that includes the cleaning notes. If you are not able to attend one of the scheduled cleaning days, please be sure to email PatM and Cyndi.
MWD: Sandy announced that we have two students who will enroll in upcoming basic classes under our Veterans Scholarship Program. The member price of $50 will be paid out of the OCOD MWD Fund. This scholarship is one way we can reach out to provide dog related support to our local community.
Scent Work Trial: Pat Dean passed around a sign up sheet for stewards for our May 18 and 19 trials. We still need a few more stewards for the Sunday trials. Lunches will be provided to workers, but we need to provide the worker NAMES to the food vendor in order to
(Continued on page 5)
Page 5 Chatter-Barks
have enough lunch for everyone. Stewards who are exhibiting will run first in their class so they will be able to steward for the rest of that level.
New Business:
Liability Release Forms: PatM passed around liability release forms for everyone to sign. The old forms are outdated and not all newer members have signed them. Everyone will be asked to sign a new one as they enter the building for the first time starting tonight. There will be a manila envelope on the front desk and we should each sign a new form and place it back into the envelope. Nina will maintain all forms alphabetically in a notebook so that we can find them in the event we ever need to do so.
Lights Behind Our Building: After much research and discussion with the landlord, it is believed that there should be a light switch inside our unit that controls the lighting behind our building. No one seemed to be aware of this, but if someone finds it, please let PatM know.
Toys: Ralph is selling dog toys made by Brandy – 2 for $10.
Obedience Trial July: Ralph sent a worker sign up sheet around. There will be a couple of new classes offered. Please be sure to read the premium. The new classes are Random Reward and Recall.
Sunshine Committee: PatM announced that we are looking for someone to head up a sunshine committee. If a club member knows of someone who is under the weather, that person would let the committee know so that they can send a card and determine if there is anything club members can do to help out.
Maintenance Type Person: PatM announced we are looking for someone who can be available in the event that our unit needs third party maintenance. This person would need to be able to be at the building to let the worker (electrician/plumber/what not) in and direct that worker to whatever needs to be fixed. This person would also assess any reports to be sure that the problem is something that indeed needs an outside company to fix. Reneé has been doing this and can explain the duties needed.
Meeting was adjourned at 7:0PM.
Kris presented info on the CDSP: http://www.companiondogsportsprogram.com/ This is a good segue into AKC obedience. We will be holding our first trial in September and cluster with CFODC. The Link to the rules: http://www.companiondogsportsprogram.com/index_htm_files/CDSPRulesRegsV6.pdf
Reneé and Kris will teach a class in July or August. IPOC is holding trials on August 3rd and 4th. We will cluster with CFODC September 14 and 15.
Respectfully Submitted,
Chris Franczek

Want to Feel Good All Over? Be a Steward!
If you’re suffering from a lack of praise and appreciation, you’ll want to seriously consider signing up to steward at
this summer’s OCOD Obedience Trials, Saturday and Sunday, July 13th 14th.
Every year we hear the same kind of praise from those who judge our trials and those who enter:
“Excellent stewards all weekend.” “Really GREAT stewards.”
“We’re spoiled. These are the best stewards we’ve ever had.”
A number of club members turn up each year to work as stewards. They know—as you will, if you’ve never done it before—that
being a steward gets you a ring-side seat, up close and personal, for all the action. Plus lunch and goodies !
If you’re thinking of preparing your dog for obedience performance, there’s no better way to learn the ways of the ring than to steward.
And no experience is needed. We train!
This year, we’ll have four obedience rings each day. Four judges. Novice, Open, Utility, Rally and a few non-standard classes.
We’ll need table stewards to help the judges keep the paperwork in order, and ring stewards to do things like put out scent articles and gloves, take leashes,
deliver dumbbells, set jump heights, and act as posts for the figure-8 exercises. And the main task: to keep the
rings running smoothly and our judges happy.
So if you’d like to give stewarding a try, or come back for another enjoyable experience, please contact
Trial Chair Ralph Orlando at [email protected] or 386-788-4268. Your help will be Greatly Appreciated!

Ziggy was adopted at age of 4 in 2008 and we had to help him over the Rainbow Bridge on May 2, 2019. He was one of my Dancing Dogs and appeared in a few of our shows, We will miss him dearly and
will be in our hearts forever.Joan Costello, Bob & Theresa Carrigan
Sincere Sympathy to Pat & Jim Mozden,After 16 years of being our precious girl, Ruby left us today. She was my perfect
demo dog at obedience classes, appeared on local TV, and gave us love every day.
Jim and I are heartbroken.
“Therapy Dogs at the Port Orange Library” Sharon McKelvey & Carly, Valerie Vetter & Spirit & Joya and friend were invited as Therapy teams to demonstrate Therapy training at the “How To Festival” at the Port Orange Library on May 4. Event was sponsored by Volusia County Public Library and a fun time was enjoyed by all.
