PRINCIPAL – Mr. Birnbaum: Thank you to everyone who attended our talent show. The performances were

great and the kids were so excited to perform. I praise God for the wonderful adults who prepared these children to be brave enough to show their skills. Thank you also to all who attended our 90th Anniversary party at the YMCA. Hope you can make it to our Sock Hop this Friday night in the gym. 90th Anniversary Update: Thank you to everyone who attended our 90th Anniversary activities. We had approximately 110 people at each of the events. We were very pleased to have so many attend the History Lesson at City Hall on Friday - February 20. Special thanks to the Gelmers, Lois Nix, Verna Rosebeary, and Howard Nelsen for representing those children who attended services during the first decade when worship was held down town in the

Civic Center. Thanks also to Mr. Nix for bringing the history to life with the story you shared with our 4th, and 6th-8th grade students. Also to Steve Vaughan for explaining to those students (and parents) present that the school holds a special place in the congregation with financial and spiritual support.

Thanks to everyone who attended the fun events at the YMCA. Thank you especially to Barbara Mayer for the GREAT cake at the Y and the kids loved the second cake at the school on Tuesday.

Our next big event is the Relay for Life team that we are forming for Saturday - May 16. Our goal is to raise at least a $1,000 but we also want to witness our walk together with great ATTENDANCE at the event. The event is at the Ambucs Motocross Track from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. You can register or donate online at RelayForLife.org, find our event, sign-up with your information, and then "Join our Team." It costs nothing to join. (We will have $5 luminaries to remember or honor cancer loved ones.) We would love to see you there sometime during the event.

ASH WEDNESDAY/SEASON OF LENT: Today We invite you to join us throughout the Lenten Season on Wednesday evenings for supper and worship services. The meal will be served between 5:45 and 6:45 p.m., followed by Lenten Church Service at 7:00 p.m. Tonight’s supper will be Sloppy Joe’s sponsored by Parish Ed/Care Ministries. We look forward to seeing you here.

CLASS PICTURES TOMORROW!: Class pictures need to be purchased in advance; if you have lost your order envelope, more are available in the office. Individual portraits are also being taken; and you may order those from the proofs when they come back. Watch your students’ backpack for proofs & more details.

TALENT SHOW: WOW! I’m nearly speechless. I thought the Talent Show this year was exceptionally fine. Way to go, Students, in sharing your talents. Thanks to all who stepped up and to all those helpers that made it possible.

CHAPEL OFFERING: Our chapel offerings for February and March will go to “Stand for the Silent”—a non-profit that supports an agenda of kindness and gentleness and non-bullying. FLS has a Stand for the Silent group and they will help us as we promote this program.

AUCTION BEE’S: Worker Bees sought…our Spring Auction is only 50 days away and we have a few places we need some help. Can you drive? As donors are being contacted, we need a few volunteers to pick donations up and bring them back to the school. Do you know your ABC’s? We will also need help entering the donation information into our auction website for the Auction booklet. Do you know your numbers? As we get closer to the auction, we will need help grouping auction items for bidding. Finally, the week of the auction we will need help with set up, decorating, and clean up after the auction. If these are areas you can see yourself being a Helper Bee, please call or text Darleanna at 580-716-1057.

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Herard: Brr! It is winter after all! Works out well with our theme of the week being "Weather". We are having fun learning about rainbows, types of clouds, and so on. Our letter is "R" for robot. We are concentrating on skills to prepare for PK. Writing our names, cutting with scissors, letter and sounds, counting and recognizing numbers, and being good students (self-control, being responsible, learning patience, etc.). We are making good progress! Book orders due next week. Show and Tell will be next Th/Fri. Please give me feedback on the LOL pictures so we can decide if we will do it again next year. Class pictures will be this TH/F so come looking your best! Please join us for the Sock Hop in the gym Friday evening. It is always fantastic! God bless!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN - Mrs. Kelly: Tomorrow is Picture Day! Class pictures must be paid for tomorrow, they are $12.00 each. We will start our Give Me Twenty Reading Challenge on Monday, March 2nd! Look for more information in backpacks today. Book orders are in backpacks, and are due back to me or online by Friday, March 6th. Show and tell is on Friday. Mark your calendars, ECE will be going to the Wondertorium is Stillwater, on Friday April 17th. More information will come home later. Chapel offering for February and March will go to the "Stand for the Silent" organization. Please consider helping this program. Our Bible words this week are, [Jesus said,] "Learn from Me." Matthew 11:29 We are learning the letter "G" and the number 17. We have been learning the Sight words a, and, big, I, is, and the. As you are reading with your child, point these words out and see if they can "read" them to you. Have a Blessed week!

KINDERGARTEN - Ms. Miller: We had a very cold week! Our class is reading "Charlotte's Web" and the children are enjoying it! When we are done with the book we will watch the movie, just for fun! Please keep working on your child's "Monday folder" and their sight words. We are becoming great readers! Have a sensational week!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory for Friday - 1st Commandment. We will have show and tell on Friday. Also, Book It Reading Logs are due on Friday to get the Pizza Hut certificate. The children will be singing in church on Sunday, March 8 to start our

Page 3: Chatter 2 25 15

Lutheran Schools Week celebration, so mark your calendars to join us that Sunday! Remember tomorrow is picture day! Have a great week and stay warm!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: I was so proud of these amazing, talented second graders. Way to represent! You did so well at the Talent Show. Thanks to Mrs. Harland for all her hard work. Many of us need more help with memory work. Please, please be sure your child can say his or her memory work to you before coming to school on Thursday morning. And, several of our friends really need to practice facts. If your child isn't able to finish their facts in 3 minutes at home, you know they need to practice. Thanks. I know we can do this. We're really working hard to be ready for third grade. Blessings. . .

THIRD GRADE - Mrs. Steichen: Isn't the snow beautiful! I am so thankful for some snow and the moisture that it brings. This week: Memory: Matthew 28:19 due Friday. Reading: No test this week as we are starting our next chapter book: Amber Brown is Not a Crayon. Spelling: Review words test on Friday. Math: test next week. Social Studies: we have started an in-class project over Indian tribes. Please ask your child about this. Sock Hop: This Friday night is the Sock Hop; please bring a canned good and dance the night away!. Pictures: Please remember that Thursday is picture day. MIDDLE SCHOOL 3/9 Graduation Pictures for 8th Grade 3/10 8th Grade: Make-up Future Freshmen

Meeting, East Middle School Library, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

3/22 8th Grade: Deadline to turn in enrollment paperwork online for next years’ 9th grade at Po-Hi

3/24 Basketball/Cheer Banquet

CURRENT 8TH GRADE STUDENTS AND FAMILIES: If you missed last night’s Future Freshmen Meeting at the

High School, there will be a make-up session March 10 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at East Jr. High’s Library. This will be a time of course selection and Q/A. Enrollment time will begin March 10 and end on March 22. No changes will be available after the deadline.

TRACK: First Lutheran offers track for grades 6th - 8th. If you are interested in joining the track team, please have your child sign up for the 4th quarter track elective and/or let Coach Redwine know. Practice times will be Monday and Friday from 2:30-3:20 and Tuesday & Thursdays from 3:30-4:30. We will start track practice the Monday after spring break on March 23rd.

Mrs. Harbeson: Well, I'm beginning to feel better, and I appreciate all the prayers concerning my health. I also appreciate everyone who has been praying for my dad. We had to admit him to the hospital last Friday morning because he was unresponsive when my mom tried waking him up that morning. He was finally released today (Sunday), but he still has some ongoing health issues that are up in the air. If you would continue to pray for him, our family, and his doctors, I would truly be grateful. We're beginning to head into the final stretch of the 3rd quarter. I have spent most of the weekend catching up on grading, and I will be going over missing assignments (the ones that I can still take) with the students this week. Ultimately, though, it is up to each student to check his or her FastDirect and find out what needs to be made up. Please be working hard to get all assignments handed in. The week before Spring Break, we will be celebrating National Lutheran Schools Week. We will have some special dress up days, and on one of those days, we will be taking a field trip to the YMCA. On the last day of the quarter, March 13, everyone is invited to the gym to watch the 8th graders take on the teachers in a game of volleyball. This is always a fun time for everyone. Speaking of the last day before Spring Break, I will be absent. I have been suffering for several years with some foot problems, and I've finally decided to have it taken care of. I'll be having foot surgery that day, but I will be

Page 4: Chatter 2 25 15

back in school the first day after Spring Break. I'll be in some kind of boot, so if you see me, that's what's going on. That's all for now. I hope you stay warm this week! Blessings!

Mrs. Hanson: 6th Graders have learned the 3 laws of motion all on their own!!! We will now have a small independent project to show their full understanding of the laws and the application in their daily lives. Some work may have to be done at home, but most of it will be done in the classroom.

7th Graders are chuggin' along on their volcano projects. These projects are due Feb. 25. We will be presenting our visual reports in class.

8th Grade is being introduced to genetics, one of my favorite concepts in biology. We are going to put the power in the hands of the 8th graders to see what they would like to discover about this topic. They will be given a lot of facilitated freedom with this unit with which they are to explore a certain aspect of genetics that interests them.

Mr. Covert: Another week is upon us as God graces us with snow. While the white stuff can make driving bothersome, it reminds us of how we look to God, pure and unblemished, due to Christ’s sacrifice on the cross for us. It’s a great reminder of all we have to be thankful for.

The classes are moving right along. 8th grade has hit the start of the Civil War, as the North and South realize their differences are irreconcilable. In 7th grade, we will wrap up West Central Europe, and move on to Northern Europe. And in 6th grade, we’ve covered the fall of the Roman Empire, and now we move to Europe, where the Germanic tribes are working into civilizations that will shape the modern world.

7th grade parents, I still have a few families that I need a count from for those going along with their students to Washington, DC. It doesn’t need to be 100% set in stone; we’re looking for a ballpark figure to start finding the lowest rates for flights.

God’s blessings on the rest of your week! Mrs. Goll: Our Algebra students tested on Tuesday (the class average on the test was 88%; Go, Algebra

Students!) And that’s good because we’re getting ready to tackle the quadratic equation—always an interesting challenge. Pre-algebra students are continuing to graph linear equations; this chapter has covered a lot of ground. They’ll be testing next week—so extra study now would be helpful. (Ask them about the slope-intercept form.) Seventh graders are winding up their chapter on percents and proportions; we plan to test on Friday. Sixth-graders tested today over proportions. They’ll tackle some geometry next. God’s blessings on you and your family as you continue to seek Him first during this Lenten season.
