Jennifer Vaughan at 580-716-1931 or [email protected], and be sure to like us on Facebook: Chess Club - First Lutheran School.

PRINCIPAL - Mr. Birnbaum: Joke of the week - What did the one snowman say to the other snowman? Answer - (Sniff, sniff) Do you smell carrots? New Year's Resolutions - Children need to spend more time with their fathers, especially boys. Dads/granddads -

make a New Year's Resolution (and keep it) to come eat lunch with your precious child at least once this semester or take them out to eat if you have enough time. This is a fleeting moment in time but a memorable experience.

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Herard: We welcome Austin Vap to our classroom! He has only been here a couple of days but he already fits right in. Watch for forms in backpacks for the Stephen Fite concert. It's not until April but space is limited so registration and money must be turned in early. Please turn in by Jan 27. There is no school on the 18th to allow for P/T conferences. If you would like to schedule a conference, let me know asap. Book order is due this Friday. The purchases you make allow us to get wonderful educational items for our classroom. Thank you so much! This week our theme is "Space" (always one of the favorites of the year). God bless you this week.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN - Mrs. Kelly: Happy Birthday Jane! We had a great time with our Dads last Friday! Thank you Dads for coming! Report cards came out last week; if you haven't returned your signed envelope, please return it tomorrow, thank you! Our 100th day of school will be Thursday, January 28th. Look for the notes in backpacks today. ECE will be having a food drive to help out the church's food pantry. Our goal is to collect 100 food items, by the 100th day of school. Our January book order is due back to me or online by Friday. We will not have school on Monday, January 18th. Look for the note about conferences in backpacks today. ECE will be going to the Stephen Fite concert in April; notes and permission slips are in backpacks today. Please return those with your money by Wednesday, January 27th.Our Bible words this week are, I trust in You, O Lord. Psalm 31:14 We are learning the letter "K" and the number "12" this week. Have a blessed week!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Flaherty: Reminder no school on Monday! Parent teacher conference notes will go home in backpacks today. This week we are working on the letter "Qq" and weather. Bible words this week our "I trust in you,O Lord." Psalm 31:14. Thank you to all the families that brought in snack items.

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Our class would like to wish Caylee (1-11) and Relic (1-12) a very happy birthday! A fun game of sight word bingo can be found at www.abcya.com and several other fun items the children like! Please, look for a field trip paper in your child's backpack today. Also, a paper about the 100th day of school (Jan, 28th) ECE food drive. Next week on Monday are parent/teacher conferences and if you would like a conference please call me (580-716-8185). We do not have school on that day. Have a sensational week!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: Memory for Friday - For God so loved the World that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16. I still have a few report cards that need to be signed and returned. Coming home today are book orders and a field trip note and form. Book orders are due next Thursday, Jan. 21. Field trip money and form are due back on Wednesday, Jan. 27. Have a great day off from school on Monday!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: SAVE THE DATE! The second graders will be singing at First Lutheran Church on Sunday, January 24 at the 11:00 service. I know I'll see ALL of you there. We're working hard and learning many new things. Nearly every child knew the first commandment and meaning when they arrived at school last Thursday. Thank you for checking to be sure your child knows memory work. Each child will need a shoe box for Valentine's Day. We'll make our boxes February 1. Enjoy your long weekend! Blessings!

THIRD GRADE - Mrs. Steichen: Wow, I am so pleased with how everyone has come back to start the quarter. Thank you! If you haven't already done so, please sign and return your child's report cards. This week: This is review week - that means review spelling words, review worksheets, and a paper. Everyone is super excited about our Pop Rock paper. Please ask your child about it. A.R. goals have been set and we are working our way to a game day. Thank you to Mrs. Ware for our pizza party from last quarter. Singing in Church: the second and third graders are singing in chapel Sunday, January 24 at the 11 a.m. service. Please meet us at the church at 10:45. We hope you all can join us! Have a wonderful week! Remember no school on Monday, January 18th.

FOURTH GRADE - Mrs. Sibley: We are back into the swing of school. Keep practicing math facts and concepts. This helps to ensure that we have speed and accuracy for more difficult math problems. Keep reading for AR & Book It. If you wish to have a parent teacher conference, please contact me so we may set one up for Monday afternoon, otherwise you should have received a conference paper in your child’s mail. God’s Blessings on your week! Make sure that we are working on our book report/project (that information was sent home last Friday). Feel free to ask any questions about the book report/project to have best success. Have a great week working for the Lord!

3 Growing up Into Jesus, Reaching Out with Jesus, Walking Together in Jesus

FIFTH GRADE - Mrs. Schatte: Brrrr!!! I hope everyone is staying warm! God is so good to us....even though it's cold we've received much welcomed moisture, and the sun is shining again. Often I think I'm like the Israelites...I complain about the weather way too much. Tests this week include spelling and reading on Friday. Tuesday we took math test 9 and Thursday is social studies test 4. Please help your child review for these tests, especially the social studies. The children have an excellent review sheet. It would really help if you asked your child questions from it. Thanks! Blessings on your week.

MIDDLE SCHOOL 1/27 7:30 FLSCA

Student Council – Mrs. Goll: What a great dance we had Friday evening! Many thanks to Max Jackson for being our DJ. And thanks to Mrs. Jackson, Mrs. Harland, Mrs. Heitman, and Mrs. Warnecke for helping with decorations. Also, thanks to our clean-up crew and parents, the Jackson’s, Lee’s, Warnecke’s and Harland’s. Also, thanks to all StuCo members and parents who provided goodies for the evening. Our students are truly blessed to have such loving, supportive families.

Mrs. Goll: We’ve had a great start to third quarter. We’ll be testing in almost all levels this week and early next week. Please ask your student what he/she is studying. Parent/teacher conferences are scheduled for Monday. Please contact me if you’d like to visit about your child’s math progress. Blessings as you serve the Lord this week and always.

Mrs. Harbeson: Hello, First Lutheran Family! I hope you all are doing well! We sure have a lot going on right now...a big thanks goes out to our student council members, their parents, and to Mrs. Goll for hosting our winter dance last Friday night! We had a great turnout, the kids looked spectacular, and a fun night was had by all. Our basketball teams and cheerleaders are knee-deep in games right now. Something you might want to put on your calendars...we will be recognizing our 8th graders during our games on Thursday, February 4. All 8th grade basketball players and cheerleaders will be receiving information about this special night in the next week or so. We are also gearing up for the Topeka tournament in February. If you have not made room reservations, you need to call Topeka West ASAP because rooms are going fast. You can find the hotel's number on the FLS Basketball Facebook page. With all these activities going on, I know it can be challenging to juggle everything. Please remember to spend time with your family. Also, please don't let your assignments and grades fall behind. It is always easier to stay current than to catch up. I also want to remind you to hand in your assignments on time. Starting this quarter, I will be closely following the school's late work policy. Assignments handed in one day late will receive a score with 10% off, assignments handed in two days late will receive a score with 50% off, and any assignment handed in after two days late will receive a 0. I hope you all have a great week! Blessings to you all!

Mrs. Hanson: Last week was a great first week! I saw dramatic improvement in focus and productivity. I pray that this lasts into the semester so we can end this school year with a bang!

7th grade: the sign-up sheet for the 5th grade basketball tournament concessions. Please sign up as soon as possible.

8th grade will be performing dissections next week and we have been practicing and preparing with virtual dissections.

6th grade has organized their science folders. These need to be kept organized. All paper are expected to be kept the entire semester in preparation for the final. Binder checks will be graded with every test.

The middle school will be performing in a musical this spring. Preparations will begin in the next couple weeks. Students will be memorizing songs and lines starting next week. All students are involved and expected to be at all performances on April 29, so please mark this day in your calendar.

Mr. Covert: Our first week back is in the books! We had a good start to the third quarter, and we’re looking to continue in that this week as well!

In 8th grade, we’re examining how the cultures of the North and South differed just prior to the Civil War, and how those differences split the country. In 7th grade, we’ll finish up South America this week, and hop across the pond to look at Europe next week. The 6th grade is still discussing Rome, and their influences on our country.

I pray that God blesses us this week as we continue to learn about Him and the world He put us in!
