From the Principal’s Pen…Mrs. Colleen Winkler: It has been an exciting beginning of the year! I am thrilled to see our students following
Chateau’s Community Values: Respect, Enthusiasm, Accountability, Leadership and
Community. (R.E.A.L. Community) Our faculty, staff and administration refer to the
values when we are praising and or correcting students. For example, a teacher might
say, “Dion, thank you for showing respect and opening the door for the student with all
of those books in his hand”. We may ask, “Cindy, are you showing accountability by
not completing your homework?” Our values help our students to recognize their
choices. We ask parents to support our school by referring to our simple but powerful
values at home. Together, we can help students to grow and to understand the choices
they make.
This year Jefferson Parish Public Schools embarked on a new initiative called Late
Take- In days. This initiative is a national trend and has helped to improve the quality of
teaching and assessing students. Late Take- In days are designed to provide time for
teachers to collaborate with one another to discuss each student’s needs and the lessons
teachers will teach to meet those needs. Our first Late Take-In day was a huge success.
Thank you to our parents for full cooperation. We appreciate your support! Our next
Late Take-In day is Sept 28th. Other Late Take-In dates include Oct 26
th and Jan 25th.
Thank you for your partnership and your support of this initiative.
Together we ensure all students’ needs are met in addition to planning quality
instruction and assessments to meet more rigorous state requirements.
Last but not least, please follow Chateau on Facebook and Twitter. We post pictures of
classroom lessons, celebrations, student achievements, school announcements and other
news that parents can read. Two celebrations that we posted last week were our
Students of the Month and our Teacher of the Month.
Congratulations to Coach Kitchen. He was nominated and selected as our Teacher of
the Month. Thank you for showing Leadership and Accountability to our school.
Congratulations to Brynnan Masters, Elementary Student of the Month
Congratulations to Nathaniel Morris, Middle School Student of the Month
Thank you, boys for upholding Chateau’s values of Respect, Enthusiasm,
Accountability, Leadership and Community. We are very proud of you!

Congratulations to Brynnan Masters, Elementary Student of the Month Congratulations to Nathaniel Morris, Middle School Student of the Month Thank you, boys for upholding Chateau’s values of Respect, Enthusiasm, Accountability, Leadership and Community. We are very proud of you!
The Latest Buzz with Mr. Kelt….. On August 18
th, we held our open house at Chateau Estates. Thank you
to all the parents who came to meet the faculty and support our school;
we had a great turn out. One of the highlights of the night was seeing
parents take pictures of the new bulletin boards throughout the school.
Displayed on the bulletin boards are students’ college applications and
some even have pictures of students in caps and gowns. Every day Mrs.
Winkler and I walk the campus and read some of the applications and it is great to know that we are developing
future doctors, police officers, artists, engineers, and scientists, to name a few.
The aforementioned bulletin boards are part of our new College Bound Initiative. Each classroom in the school
is now named after a college or university, and no longer do we refer to the grade the student is in, we call them
by the year they will graduate from a four year college. For example, the former 2nd
grade is now referred to as
the class of 2031!
The benefits of this initiative are twofold. First, naming each classroom after a college aligns with the
Conscious Discipline model that we follow at Chateau and our value of community. Students will develop a
sense belonging and pride to be a part of the classroom college they are in. Also, this initiative instills in
students the idea that being a college graduate and becoming whatever they dream of is in their reach. Whether
they finish from high school and go to Harvard, or start a career, they will be prepared and ready to be
successful citizens and life-long learners.
From the Dean’s Desk…Mr. Baker
Car Rider Morning Drop Off
It is the Chateau Estates School policy that all car riders need to go through the car rider line; gates open at 7:50
A.M and close promptly at 8:17 AM. The tardy bell rings at 8:20. If a student is tardy, the parent does need to
walk them into the office.
In the morning, only the right lane is used. Parents should move cars up as far as they can when going through
the car rider drop off line, so there are no gaps between cars. When the line stops and you are in the horseshoe,
please have your child get out of the car at that point. If you have a low vehicle, use caution when opening the
door, so that it does not hit the curb.
Car Rider Afternoon Pick-Up
It is the Chateau Estates School policy that all car riders need to be picked up in the car rider line. Pick up
begins at about 3:10. You may pull into the horseshoe as soon as the gates open; we use both lanes in the
afternoon. Please display the car rider signs as this speeds up the process. Please pull up as far as you can, but
try not to block the ramp crossing, where the pedestrians and bus riders cross.
Counselor’s Corner……Parents,
Welcome to our 2016 – 2017 school year! I am looking forward to working with you
and your child this school year. Counseling services are available to the students here
at school through the Early Intervention Program. These services are designed to
assist and advise both parents and children through individual and group counseling
sessions. Areas of concern are approached by helping the students positively resolve
both academic and/or behavioral problems.
Students may be referred for counseling services by the administration, parent, teacher, or student him/herself.
During the first two weeks of school, I went into each classroom to introduce myself as the school counselor
and my role. I gave each child a Counseling Permission Letter for you to read, check yes or no for your
consent, sign, and asked your child to return it to the teacher. Please know that giving your consent on this
signed and returned form DOES NOT mean that your child will definitely visit with me (the school counselor).
This form will be kept on file in my office for this school year – 2016-2017. IF A NEED SHOULD OCCUR
during this school year for me to visit with your child, I may do so with this consent form you returned.
Once again, we are striving for a positive school climate with implementation of our Positive Behavior
Intervention Support (PBIS) School Program along with our Conscious Discipline. We have MONTHLY
THEMES and we begin EACH MORNING with our DAILY WORDS OF WISDOM which help us make
GOOD CHOICES for ourselves all through the day. Our Conscious Discipline helps the students feel safe,
loved, and connected, allowing for a positive learning environment.
In September, the Coroner’s Office presented to our middle school students on “The Signs and Symptoms of
Suicide” and how to A.C.T. and ask for help. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a 24-hour toll-free
line for people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. The phone number is 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Notes from Nurse Kerri…… Phooey Phooey stay away Fluey…………… As we are heading into cold and flu season, we need to keep everyone as well as
possible. Let’s first understand how colds and flus are spread. Influenza (Flu virus)
and cold viruses spread mainly through tiny droplets made when people with the
virus cough, sneeze, or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby, or be
inhaled into the lungs. They can also spread by direct contact with infected individuals; or by contact with
contaminated objects (such as toys, doorknobs, books, pens, desks etc.) Since we don’t always know when
others are sick, we all need to be cautious in preventing the spread of germs. You may not feel sick, but you
may be carrying a virus!
TIPS
Maintain proper hygiene! Never sneeze or
cough into your hand. If you use a tissue, be sure
to dispose of the tissue immediately and wash
your hands right away. If soap is not available, use
alcohol based hand sanitizer. If a tissue is not
available, sneeze or cough into the crook of your
elbow. Also, avoid rubbing your eyes. Eyes
secrete fluids, which can also transmit viruses.
Always wash your hands after using the restroom and before eating.
Always stay away from people that are sick! Parents can help prevent the spread of germs in schools by
keeping sick kids home. If a student runs a fever or vomits, keep them out of school and away from others for
24 hours after their last fever, or last episode of throwing up, without the use of medication to suppress
symptoms. If a student runs a fever or vomits at school, they should not return the following day, as it has not
been 24 hours.
Maintain a healthy immune system! Adequate sleep and daily exercise are essential in staying healthy. Diets that
are plentiful in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, low-fat dairy, healthy fats, and more can provide a
wide array of nutrients and antioxidants that can help boost the immune system.
Stay well,
Kerri Glover RN, BSN School Nurse
Happening in Our Classrooms … Pre-K: Class of 2034
Pre-K is ready to begin the new year! The students are anxious and excited
about what this school year holds. We began the year learning about rules,
routines and conscious discipline. Conscious discipline helps the students to
feel safe and appreciated in their classroom. We aim to build classroom
community by inspiring our students to work as a team and encourage them to
participate in daily lessons. As teachers we strive to prepare them to become successful learners in their lifelong
journey. This year we are using the Frog Street curriculum. In the months of August and September we have
discussed senses and feelings; in the upcoming month we will be learning more math and literacy skills. We
appreciate parental involvement and want to work together as a team with both parents and students to make
this a great, successful school year.
Kindergarteners: Class of 2033
Kindergarten is excited to meet their teachers Mrs. Wilson, Mrs.Blanke, Ms.
Womac and Mrs. Guise.
Kindergarten’s first unit in reading is Chrysanthemum. "Chrysanthemum is
named after a flower," said Silas Naquin. "The kids didn't like her at her school
and made fun of her name. But I kinda like her name."
"Chrysanthemum is a mouse," said Shundrick Taylor. "My favorite part of the
story is when she goes to school."
Our kindergarten classrooms are college and career ready. Mrs. Wilson's room is
the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Ms. Womac's room is the University of Houston,
Mrs. Blanke's room is Columbia University Lions and Mrs. Guise is McNeese
State University Cowboys! We can't wait to graduate as the class of 2033!
First Graders: Class of 2032
The First Grade teachers and students are excited about the 2016-2017
school year! Our First Grade Team this year includes: Ms. Morvant, Mrs.
Wooley, and Mrs. Riccardi. We are so excited to teach your children and want
to welcome you to our team. Together we can help each student thrive. We look
forward to a great year.
The students are jumping right into learning and making a community with
each other. Last year our first grade team was awarded through Donors Choose
ten math and ELA centers. The students are really having a good time with
hands-on learning through these centers.
Second Graders: Class of 2031
Greetings and salutations from 2nd grade, or as we like to call it, the Class of 2031! We are so excited to start
the adventures of second grade! This year, our team includes Ms. Steve, Ms. Buras, Mrs. Whelen, and Mrs.
Bahan.
So far, in Language Arts, we have been practicing our skills on finding our evidence in a text to support our
answer. We have also been reviewing nouns, and why they are important to understand. In math, we have
learned all about adding and subtracting within 20, and how to properly show our work to model our thinking.
We are so excited for what this year has to bring us! We will be working hard through every challenge that we
face. We are the Class of 2031!
Third Graders: Class of 2030
Third grade is excited for another new year of
learning! The students began by practicing
Chateau’s R.E.A.L. community values and
showing these values to gain acceptance into the
class of 2030’s three universities: Princeton,
Tulane, and Cornell. In ELA the third graders
have been diving deep into stories, learning how
to describe characters, and seeing how these
characters as well as key details contribute to the
story’s central message. In math, they are learning
a third grade favorite—multiplication! The
students are using strategies and fun chants like
rolling numbers to learn their facts. In Science,
they have begun exploring the scientific method
and applying it to their study of matter. There are
many exciting things going on in third grade, and
we’re just getting started!
Fourth Graders: Class of 2029
Our 4th graders are off to a great beginning of the school year! Students enjoyed filling out their college
application and learning all that college has to offer. In science class, students worked on measuring and
comparing matter. Our students completed a lab titled, “Does Changing the shape of an object affect the mass
of an object?” They used a pan balance to find the actual mass of clay in three different shapes. In Social
Studies, our students have mastered labeling all 50 states on the US map, the seven continents and oceans on a
world map, and they can describe the 5 regions of the US using landforms and climate. Students have started
their place value unit in Math and have been working on the 3 different forms of a number- expanded form,
standard form, and word form. In ELA, students are learning about hurricanes and writing descriptive essays.
We are looking forward to continuing a successful 1st quarter and school year with our 4th graders!
Fifth Graders: Class of 2028
5
th Grade is off to a GREAT start. We spent the first few weeks of school learning procedures and classes are
running smoothly. Students are aware of the expectations and are following our Chateau R.E.A.L. Community
Values. They have been working collaboratively to maximize their learning. The 5th
grade teachers are
impressed with the knowledge that the students arrived with and are looking forward to expanding on it.
Students have participated in team build activities to build relationships with one another and the teachers and
perform acts of kindness daily. Our most exciting activity so far has been the introduction of our college and
career initiative. Students were excited to take cap and gown pictures to be displayed in the hallway as well
completing their college application.
Middle School: Classes of 2027, 2026, and 2025 In ELA, sixth-graders have been working diligently in their exploration of natural disasters in relation to the
fiction novel Out of the Dust as well as excerpts from Zane and the Hurricane. Meanwhile, in social studies the
students have begun to explore the wonderful world of early civilizations. Students have begun their Social
Studies Fair Project for this year, and are required to pick a culture they would like to explore independently. In
6th grade math, students are learning how to be smart shoppers by determining what the better buy is! In
science, students are the scientist in a penny lab experiment by using the scientific method! Wednesday,
September 14, students made slime and were the real scientists in this scientific investigation!
In social studies 7th
graders have been studying colonial times while the 8th graders are examining cultural
regions of Louisiana. In English, students are focusing on reading novels and short stories while mastering
literary terms. In science, the students are learning about conducting experiments with safety, using the
periodic table, learning how to identifying elements, and mastering more and more vocabulary. Students have
also been creating Bohr models of atoms. In math, Algebra I students are solving inequalities, 8th
graders are
comparing scientific notations, and 7th
graders are learning about proportional relationships.
The Physical Education Department and Health Department are excited about the 2016-2017 school year! The
PE department, along with the rest of the school, will be implementing a new program called CATCH
(Coordinated Approach to Child Health). Chateau Estates School was one of eight schools in Jefferson Parish
that was chosen to participate in the CATCH initiative. The CATCH program provides a proven and easy-to-
implement action plan for:
Teaching children to make healthy choices
Creating a school environment that encourages healthy eating and physical activity
We are asking parents to help their child complete their Bingo board that goes home every 6 weeks. We would
like for all parents to encourage their child to eat healthy and participate in physical activity daily.
Our 6th -8
th graders recently met with Miss Jackie from The Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office. Miss Jackie
spoke to the students about suicide prevention and the effects it can have on everyone. They learned about signs
to look for and ways to speak to someone going through a difficult time. Thank you Mrs. Jackie for coming to
speak with us.
Latest News from Our Librarian…..
The library is open for business!
I am so excited to see all of my old friends back at school and anxious to get to know all of our new friends!
Classes and checkouts are in full swing. Students have learned how to treat our books and what treasures await
them in each section of the library. Parents, please read daily with your children. Discussing story elements with
them will heighten their understanding and help them develop a love of reading! Also, please help your children
remember to take care of our books, keep them in their backpacks for safe keeping, and return them on their
library day for new ones. I look forward to the rest of the year and all the adventures that await us within our
