The Rotary Club of Charlton are

proud sponsors of the Charlton

Community Newsletter.

WOW, what a big edition of the newsletter we have this

month. It's jam packed with lots of sports presentations and

sport reunion articles as well as a number of coming events.

August was a great month with my 2 boys having their

birthdays. Tyler had a whole week of celebrations. It started

with us going to the Circus, then a day at the Zone in Bendigo

where he got to play laser tag, go roller blading and have a go

at driving a Go Kart all by himself. He did a great job but

those corners just seemed to come from nowhere, hehe. He

was spoiled rotten on the day of his birthday but the fun did

not stop there! He had dress up day for book week at school

where he dressed up as his favourite book character Garfield.

Now I’m no sewer but I have to tell you as long as you have

super glue in the house you can make anything!!! Tyler also

played his first game of Saturday Minkey. He had the best

time and was even lucky enough to score a goal and win an

award. Go Tyler!

Now back to the newsletter. I really want to take this

opportunity to acknowledge and thank someone that makes it

possible to be able to produce a newsletter each month and

that special person is Jenny Pollard. Every month, Jenny puts

fantastic articles together and I am always very grateful to her

for allowing me to use them for the newsletter. I often call

upon Jenny to help me out and she is always more than

willing to do so. Thank you Jenny. Big thanks to everyone

else who has helped out this month, also to those who got

phone calls at the last minute. You never let me down.

This months front cover is inspired by Book Week, don’t the

kids look fantastic, great job everyone.

Happy Father’s day to all the dads out there. I hope you all

have a super day on Sunday.

Have a great month and take care

Chief Executive Officer of EWHS

Any person requiring medical advice or treatment after hours is

advised to contact the GP helpline on 1800 022 222 in the first

instance. At all times, if there is a medical emergency, phoning 000

is the first and most appropriate action

All EWHS campuses have an Urgent Care Centre which is attended

24 hours a day by our nursing staff. Urgent Care is not

independently staffed and our nursing staff also manage the

inpatients within the Hospital and in some campuses, Residential

Care as well.

The local health service in your home town can be contacted by

phone, or in person, for advice and treatment, regardless of which

doctor in the area is on call. Registered nurses at your local health

service will triage (assess) your needs and will consult with the

doctor on call if this is required. In many cases, orders for treatment

can be given over the phone, negating the need to travel to another

town. There are times when the doctor will request a consultation

with the patient, either in person or via video conferencing.

If transfer to another health care facility is required in an

ambulance, payment is the responsibility of the patient; not

EWHS.

As the hospital does not employ General Practitioners at the Urgent

Care Centres, the doctor on call will invoice the patient direct for

any consulting services provided at the Hospital. For this reason,

members of the public are encouraged to attend the Hospital only for

an urgent medical need.

If medical attention is not urgent, patients are encouraged to contact

their GP during business hours.

To the Editor,

I write to inform you of a matter hat has come to

my attention of the past weeks. The Charlton

Community Bus which was managed by the

Buloke Shire has been withdrawn from service

indefinitely. The bus that is used by many of

different community groups has been left/dumped

in a yard pretty much never to be used again and

with no intention of a replacement. This has

angered me greatly and I feel that the more know of

this situation then perhaps something can been

done to insure that we regain OUR COMMUITY

BUS.

I have done a bit of research and this is what I

found:-

The bus was delivered to Charlton on the

31/05/1995

It has been put off the road due to being too

expensive to repair.

It was labelled the Charlton Community bus

not just the shires.

The major sponsors of the bus were

Town of Charlton, Charlton Health and

Welfare Group, Shire of Buloke, Charlton

Community Health Centre.

It was a joint venture project between Veterans

Affair, Charlton Sub Branch RSL & HACC

Sporting Groups and many of the Charlton

Community hire it to avoid numerous car

loads.

Planned Activities Group used the bus

regularly and our now unable go anywhere due

to no bus.

It has also been brought to my attention that

over the years enquires were made on the

condition of the bus as well as its future but no

response was ever given.

So I ask the following questions:

If the shire couldn’t maintain the upkeep of the bus

why didn’t they ask the community to assist as it

was a ‘Community Bus”?

Why was the Community not warned or given

notice that we would no longer have a Community

Bus?

When the shire auction the bus off, who will get the

money?

Will the money go back into the community &

organisations that donated to it?

What is the future for another Community Bus?

Are there people out in the community to put their

hands up to fundraise for a new one?

I’m sure you all have many other questions you

would all liked answered regarding this issue. I

think it would a massive shame is the town was

never to have access to a community bus ever

again.

As a community I think we should speak up and

let’s get the Bus back on the road.

North Central Financial Services Ltd Chairman, Robin McRae has

announced that the Charlton & District Community Bank has now

commenced a Low Volume Market for the sale of its shares.

NEW WAY OF BUYING SHARES

NCFS Ltd has introduced the Low Volume Method of trading its

shares.

All companies have shares issued in them. These shares are able to be

traded, i.e. bought and sold by share traders, owners or any interested

parties at some stage in the life of the company.

The Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Community Bank® companies are

no different.

Shares are issued in the company and are able to be bought and sold

i.e. traded, subject to the share ownership restrictions in the company’s

constitution.

A Low Volume Market is an unlicensed financial market approved

and regulated by the Corporations Law (Low Volume Financial

Markets) Exemption Notice 2003. ASIC (Australian Security and

Investment Commission) is responsible for administering the Low

Volume Market exemption notice.

Characteristics that make a market in Community Bank® company

shares unique are:

* One shareholder, one vote constitutions.

* Shareholder limit of 10% of issued capital for individuals and related

entities.

* 20% capping of available profits for return to shareholders via

dividend.

* Investors must posses a ‘close connection’ with the community

serviced by the company*.

* The number of shareholders in the Community Bank® company

must meet the minimum requirement for the company (Base Number

Restriction)*

There are many advantages to both the Community Bank® Company

and the investors in a Low Volume Market structure for trading shares.

Advantages to the investor:

* A more transparent process for investors trading in the market than

an informal ‘notice board’ system

* Shareholders have access to trade history and price details

of previous trades. This can help investors when determining a share

price for trading.

* Lower costs to shareholders trading in the market.

Professional brokers are not required to perform trades on the market.

However, investors may incur a cost if they wish to seek independent

legal or financial advice.

Advantages to the Community Bank® company:

* Reduced regulatory reporting obligations than those required

through a stock exchange which means fewer reports to be submitted

to regulatory authorities.

* Minimal cost to maintain which means that the Community Bank®

company is not spending large amounts of funds operating the market.

* The market framework is provided by the Corporations (Low

Volume Financial Markets) Exemption Notice 2003.

* The company has the protection of the Community Bank® model. A

company listed on a stock exchange is not permitted to have Base

Number provisions.

Mr McRae indicated that from now, anyone interested in purchasing

the company’s shares need to register online at the Community Bank’s

website - http://www.bendigobank.com.au/public/community/our-

branches/charlton

Commitment and dedicated service to Ambulance Victoria (AV) was

recognized recently with the presentation of milestone awards to

Harry Brinley (Charlton and District Ambulance Team Manager) and

Cr. David Pollard (ACO – Ambulance Community Officer).

The Charlton and District Ambulance Auxiliary AGM provided the

forum for Campaspe Group Manager, Kerry

Strachan to present twenty-year Safe

Driving plaques and twenty-year Long

Service Medals to both Harry and David.

On behalf of AV CEO, Greg Sassella,

Kerry acknowledged the contribution which

both men have provided – not just to

Ambulance Victoria, but to the

communities serviced by the ambulance.

“These awards are well deserved, and I

congratulate you” said Kerry.

In responding Harry said he felt privileged

to be working in such a good community

and with such a great team.

“They’re a good, reliable crew” Harry

said, “and it’s a real pleasure to be

working with them.”

Harry also acknowledged the extensive and unselfish contribution

which Cr. Pollard has given over the years, saying that he thought

they were probably both aiming for a forty year medal!

McCallum and Lynne Nicholson who are both quilters and will show

their Poppies Quilt made for the Gallipoli Centenary. There are also

artworks displayed from the younger schoolchildren. Drinks and

nibbles are available during the evening and supper will be served

with the night concluding around 10.30pm.

photography works, purchasing if something takes their fancy; all

people attending are encouraged to vote for their favourite piece in the

Exhibition. Light lunches and morning/afternoon teas are available.

All Charlton Rotary members will again be selling raffle tickets for the

event – this year’s major prize is an award winning pastel “Goulburn

Article by Jenny Pollard

Remember how your mum used to tell you to share your toys?

Well, that’s exactly what forty exhibitors and collectors from near

and far did at the two day “Big Kids Toys” (BKT) exhibition held at

the Charlton Shire Hall and Rex Theatre last weekend.

The event, which featured a range of collectables and unique

creations, is the brain-child of local business owner, Geoff Coote of

Gallery 79.

This year’s event, run in association with the Charlton Tourism

Committee, has also included a partnership with the Rex Theatre, in

an effort to expand the venues and boost the scope of presentation.

2014 has also seen an increase in the number of participants, which

speaks well for the future growth of this project.

“Last year we had thirty-five exhibitors and this year there are more

than forty” said Geoff, “so we are gradually building our numbers.”

And the thing is, this show is much more than just putting a lot of

well-loved objects on display.

“I had a lot of people come into my shop and talk about their

collections or hobbies” said Geoff, “but they had no outlet for sharing

all these things with other people. That got me thinking, and the idea

for “Big Kids Toys” developed.”

Aside from showing their collections, the value of the event has a

number of much deeper benefits.

Due to the nature of many hobbies people can end up working in

isolation. Geoff said that one of the great things to come from the

inaugural show last year was the interaction between exhibitors as

they talked with others about their interests and collecting habits.

“We also see this event as a way of providing people with

alternatives to sport. Not everyone can play sport, or has an interest

in sport, but giving collecting and hobby based activities validation

can give people another form of meaningful recreation - and in our

small communities that’s very important.”

While BKT is unashamedly geared towards men, it has already

provided an obvious impact for some of the exhibitors.

“There are a couple of participants who have shown a new lease of

life from being involved in “Big Kids Toys” said Geoff. “We are

very mindful of the need to address men’s health issues, and we

believe that this show is one way of achieving those goals. The ladies

tend to already have outlets and networks for sharing and showing

their hobbies, and we wanted to establish a vehicle for men to have

those same opportunities.”

An inclusion in this year’s show was the Lego building activity –

primarily geared towards the kids. While it allowed the younger fry

creative freedom, it also encouraged them to then appreciate the skills

which the adults had on display.

“Last year many of the older men were really impressed with some of

the collections the younger boys had put in, so the benefits of this

show works two ways and offers something for all ages” said Geoff.

The participation of Men’s Sheds from Wycheproof, Wedderburn

and Charlton was also seen as a big plus for this year’s event.

Geoff was keen to acknowledge the attendance of collectors and

hobbyists Rod Featherston from Ballarat, Bob Mackey from

Melbourne and Johan and Anneke Verbove from Mt. Macedon, along

with the specially collated exhibition of wooden toys made by local

John O’Brien.

“John has done so much for so many in the Charlton community over

the years, that we wanted to repay that contribution in some way, and

this is the largest collection of John’s hand- made wooden toys

gathered” said Geoff.

.

No it’s not the Wizard of Oz, or Doctor Who with his time machines – it’s

co-ordinator Geoff Coote who has been a passionate driver of BKT.

Geoff’s own speciality is Steam Punk creations two of which he holds in

the photo.

What better way to enjoy toys than playing with them! Andrew Wright (3rd

right) worked with members of the Charlton Men’s Shed to help create this

racing car track, which was the centre of attention for budding racers

during the “Big Kids Toys” exhibition. Pictured with Andrew are (l-r) wife

Paula, with daughter Ruby, son Harrison, and daughter Georgia and

friends Ben and Emily Glover.

Winner of the Most Popular Exhibit for Juniors is Jordan Start pictured

with his Lego 4-wheel drive vehicle. Jordan also exhibited an historical

replica of a delivery truck.

September 2014

With the larger vehicles and machines on the forecourt of the Shire

Hall, inside was full of eye-catching displays ranging from

spectacular model aircraft to exquisite miniature model railway lay-

outs.

Restored children’s cars, wooden toys, a huge slot car track, button

accordions, farming equipment, miniature models, and Men’s Shed

displays all offered a captivating look at people’s interests, incredible

skills and collecting passions.

Having the chance to talk with owners about their collections was as

important a part of “Big Kids Toys” as the displays.

Everyone had a story to tell about how their particular interest evolved

and what they loved about it.

As the crowds rolled through on Saturday Geoff was keen to

acknowledge the support of BKT committee members Frank

Cinquegrana, Carolyn Olive, Andrew Wright, and Virginia and Lewis

Winter, who assisted with the 2014 event.

Along with funding from the Foundation of Rural and Regional

Renewal (FRRR), and Charlton Community Bank, the input of

volunteers Alan Bird, Ken Lugton, Pauline Brookes, Joy Freeman and

Kevin O’Dea has also been crucial to the running of the event.

With contributors already confirming their commitment for next year,

Geoff said the committee would be keen to see beyondblue become

involved in the future, but in the meantime they will continue exploring

a range of avenues for increasing the potential “Big Kids Toys” for 2015 and beyond

purchased in South Carolina in 2008, John spent five years bringing the

bike back to this pristine glory.

Maybe it was the football ghosts of the past who willed Charlton to an

unexpected victory over Wedderburn on Saturday – we will never

know. However the past players and supporters who rallied behind

the Navy Blues were quick to claim some credit for inspiring the

current senior team to a last kick victory in a game which provided

drama and entertainment to the final siren.

The reunion commenced with a luncheon in the social rooms at

1.30pm where several speakers reminisced about different aspects of

football in the 70s.

Assistant coach Ron Field spoke glowingly of Leon Grose (coach of

the premiership sides) and his ability to extract the best from all

players. He was a teacher and mentor and highly respected throughout

the N.C.F.L in his 7 years of coaching.

Peter Hillier spoke on behalf of his father Alan, President of the

C.F.C for 9 years, and his brother Wayne (Serge) who was a player

for 6 years. Both were an integral part of the 73/74 premierships.

Sadly, Leon Grose and Alan and Wayne Hillier are no longer with us,

but they were not forgotten throughout the weekend.

Alan McGurk provided a number of humorous anecdotes and some of

his views on where the game of football is going wrong in the 21st

century.

At 2.30pm the large marquee became the venue for taking in an

entertaining game of country football - many expressed the opinion

that North Central Football has not lost its atmosphere and

community support – a fact we sometimes take for granted.

Although Charlton had been unsuccessful in its bid to win the much

coveted inaugural Woosang Challenge Cup in Round 2, it certainly

showed ‘the Burn’ are not invincible as the finals crank up.

Following a magnificent roast dinner provided by the Junior Football

Club, the evening began with a presentation of numerous past

Charlton Netball teams who were also celebrating premiership

successes. The crowd was then treated to an insight into the recruiting

and organisation required to underpin onfield success, by former

player and C.F.C. secretary of 7 years, John Campbell, who now

resides in Lockwood. John also spoke highly of Leon Grose,

describing him as a born leader, and his president in many of those

years Alan Hillier, who was an enthusiastic and tireless worker for the

club.

John’s father Jack was also acknowledged for his support, in

particular of N.C football with his manually operated time clock on

the back of an old Ford farm truck attending finals for more than 20

years.

The contributions of the late Barry Cossar and Brian Walsh as

selectors were also acknowledged.

The strength and depth of football in our league was highlighted by

John when he referred to the success of our interleague team which

won the 1974 Country Championship Division 1. Charlton was

represented by Grose, Hindson, Sait and Evans in a team captained by

local legend Maurie Wood and coached by the inspirational Frank

Tuck.

The players were then presented to a large crowd of appreciative

Navy Blues supporters, many of whom commented that the ravages

of time (40 years) had been relatively kind to this group of football

tragics.

Kevin Sait, who won three Charlton Best and Fairest awards as a

teenager, and was runner up to John Boyle of Watchem Corack in the

Feeny Medal, looked fit enough to be still chasing the air conveyance.

He went on to play 13 Senior games at Footscray, followed by a host

of appearances for Yarraville and Williamstown when he left

Charlton, winning a V.F.A Best and Fairest along the way.

Men of the moment - reunion co-ordinator Greg McGurk (l) is pictured with

the President of the Charlton Football Club Terry Fitzpatrick (centre) and

guest and former Club Secretary John Campbell (r) following the team

presentation.

Ron Field pictured at last Saturday night’s celebrations, holds the original

ball used in the 1974 Grand Final which was passed onto him by coach Leon

Grose. Ron, a participant in both the ’73 and ’74 premierships, was also

assistant coach, and earned the respect of the players in his role of

supporting Leon with midweek training sessions. Story continues on next page

Des Hindson, the gentle giant, played several seasons with Geelong

west, and then in the W.A.F.L. with Perth and Claremont. He also

coached Kalgoorlie to two flags. Ron Field was a tower of strength in

these successful years, and John Giblett a match winning onballer.

Ian Rapkins and Ian Cossar both travelled from Queensland, Des

Hindson from Adelaide but the longest trip undertaken was by Mark

and Carmel Cadzow who have lived in New Zealand for over 20

years.

Apologies from Alwyn Grose, Russell and Joan Evans, Robert Muir,

Ken Sutcliffe, David Snell, Leon Fanning, Daryl Minster and an

extremely disappointed Barry Roberts who was a late withdrawal due

to a 24hr bug, were read out.

At the conclusion of proceedings, President Terry Fitzpatrick thanked

all those who assisted with the organisation of the reunion. He

reiterated how important sporting clubs are to establishing and

maintaining lifelong family ties and friendships.

(Postscript: Acknowledgement for the success of the weekend is due

to the work of the Reunion Committee comprising Greg McGurk,

Ric Walklate and Geoff Thompson).

At its July Annual General Meeting, the Charlton Forum

honoured Lauren Riley for her dedication to producing the

Charlton Community Newsletter with a Volunteer Recognition

Award. A new initiative from the Forum, the award will be

given each year during Volunteers Week to highlight the

achievements of volunteers in the community who may not

otherwise be recognized for their contributions through Life

Memberships etc.

Note from Lauren: Thank you to

the Charlton Forum for this

award I feel very honoured and

proud . I love putting the

newsletter together each month

but its not just about me, without

all the people that contribute

each month there would be no

newsletter, so thank you to

everyone for their support.

Also there has to be some

benefits in being the editor, I did

not like the photo of myself with

the award so I swapped it for

one with my son Tyler holding it, hehe

While the Charlton Football Club celebrated their 73 / 74 Premiership

wins last weekend the Charlton Netball Club twinned their own

reunion into the same event, recognizing the unique situation of

achieving the ultimate prize during years ending in the number four.

1974, 1984, 1994 and 2004 yielded Premierships to the U 14’s, A

Grade, U 18’s and U 13’s.

(It will be interesting to see if the trend holds for 2014!)

MC and Club Life Member, Kim Fitzpatrick welcomed the large

crowd at the Charlton Club rooms, before introducing the coaches of

each of the successful teams.

All coaches had made the return trip and were happy to extoll the

strengths of their respective teams and place value on the “team

efforts” and the club’s “winning culture”.

Jan Cossar, coach of the 1974 premiers, was the first to take the floor,

saying. “It was a big year for the fellas, but it was also a big year for

the girls.” She spoke of the “exceptional young women, who were so

skilled and so enthusiastic, and who would go on to build the club. It

really was the renaissance of the Charlton Netball Club” said Jan.

The next group – the 1984 A Grade premiers - were fortunate in

having all but one member and coach, Barb Toma, present for the

reunion.

Barb emphasized the preparedness of the girls to be open to new ideas

and changes which she brought to the club, saying that she believed it

was the “winning culture” which resulted in Charlton winning the

premiership against Birchip that day.

Carmel Fitzpatrick then took up the story as coach to the 1994 U18

premiers. “I think we went down in history, as it was the only year the

North Central Netball Association had an U18 side, so we were the

one and only!” With only eight girls for the whole season, the Grand

Final was against Donald and played at St. Arnaud – “and when we

won, we partied like there was no tomorrow!” Carmel said.

The final presentation - the 2004 U13’s premiers – saw coach Tessa

Burton praise her charges saying they remained undefeated for the

entire year, winning the grand final against Donald at Birchip 28 – 15.

Surrounded by displays of memorabilia, past and present players had

plenty of opportunities to talk over past times and re-live the

successes.

The Charlton Netball Club is looking towards 2015 as a big year of

celebration with recognition of four 1975 Premiership wins – one in

each level of the game.

There it is again – that persistent number 4!

Charlton Netball Club held its 2014 vote count and presentation night

following the first semi. Those attending knew on arrival they were in

for a special evening as the venue was superbly lit and decorated in

the navy and white colours. When welcoming all present, President

Andrea Peverill acknowledged the highlights and events of the season

including fielding a full compliment of teams for the first time in a

number of years; Pink Day for Cancer awareness; Casserole tea;

Italian night; raffles; National netball day; Netball Nation Grant

recipient; relocation and upgrade of bench sheds. A beautiful meal

was enjoyed and all counts were extremely close with two grades

having joint winners making it a very exciting night.

Kate Burton won her third consecutive A Grade Best and Fairest,

taking her tally to five. When presenting the Lucy Fitzpatrick

Memorial Trophy to Kate, Fitzpatrick family representative, Shane

acknowledged that the Charlton club has been extremely lucky to

have a player of the caliber of Kate willing to come back and play for

them for such an extended period of time. Runner Up in the A Grade

was Teagan Lawry, Spectators Award went to Kate Burton and

Georgia Haw was awarded the ‘Have a Crack’ trophy from the

coaches. In the B Grade, Best and Fairest was won by Kirsty

McKenzie who finished three votes ahead of Runner Up, Sabrina

Thompson.

Sabrina was the choice of the spectators. The Coach’s award went to

Chloe Walsh. Chloe being a junior player who has played up in B

Grade and become an integral part of that team, showing great

improvement over the season.

The C Grade count was truly exciting with Lizzy McGrath and Ellie

Rae finishing on equal votes to be joint Best and Fairest winners, just

one ahead of Runner Up Melinda Jardine. The Spectators award went

to Melinda Jardine and Kasey King was given an Encouragement

award.

The coaches of the 16 & Under teams acknowledged that getting the

two teams on court each week with low numbers and injuries was a

real juggling act and thanked the players for their willingness to quite

often play six quarters in a day. In the 16 & Under A, Danielle

Campbell was named Best and Fairest with Phoebe Thompson Runner

Up. Danielle was also the spectator’s choice. The Coaches award went

to Emily Patullo for improvement and leadership ability.

The 16 and Under A side played in the first semi on

Saturday however weren’t able to progressive any

further. Best in Finals was awarded to Danielle Campbell.

The 16 & Under B, Best and Fairest winner was Megan

Peverill who started and finished the season strongly.

Runner Up was Danielle Campbell. The Coaches Award

went to Melina Jablonka.

The count for the 13 and Under was another extremely

exciting affair, with the three more senior players all

vying for votes throughout the season. This grade was

decided in the last round, where Xanthe Fitzpatrick and

Claudia Lee tied for the Best and Fairest on 17 votes a

piece. Runner Up went to Lara Thompson. Claudia Lee

was the spectator’s choice. Zara Jenkyn was recognised by the

coaches and awarded most improved over the season in the A team

and Rose McGeown, from the B team was acknowledged as the rising

star. Morgan Sullivan was also given an encouragement award. The

13 and Under team also played in the first semi on Saturday and while

not successful put up a great effort. Best in Finals was awarded to

Claudia Lee.

The Club announced Sabrina Thompson as its Rising Star for 2014.

Sabrina is an important member of the Senior Squad playing in both

the B and A Grade sides. She was also selected as a representative of

the North Central Netball 17 & Under team this year. Some of her

achievements over the years include 2010 CNC 13 & Under Best &

Fairest, 2012 CNC 16 & U A

Best & Fairest, 2013 NCNA

16 & U Best & Fairest and

2013 C Grade Premiership player. Sabrina has the potential for great

things with her netball.

The final award of the evening was the Claire McGrath Memorial for

Best Club person. Lizzy McGrath, granddaughter of Claire, presented

the award to Shane Fitzpatrick. Shane is always willing to help around

the club whether it be working bees, fencing, concreting, erecting

sheds, gazebos or cooking barbeques. This year he was integral in the

relocation and upgrade of our bench

shelters.

Another year is over for the junior footballers, as they won’t be

competing in finals this year. Charlton Junior Football Club President

John Cossar said “Whilst we haven’t made the finals, as a club we

should be proud of the success we have had. We have managed to

field two junior teams, who have been competitive and shown

improvement. We are fortunate that we have a great group of families

who recognise the difficulties with declining population and they

encourage their children to participate and fulfil the many duties

required to keep a club functioning” One family that has three boys

involved, is the Tauli’i Williamson family, the publicans of the

Cricket Club Hotel. Grandparents Rose and Bernie recently ran an

Interactive Trivia Night and they donated the proceeds to the junior

football club. The winners on the evening were Geoff and Kim

Thompson, Marea Judd, Leon Fanning & Andrea O’Gorman and John

and Kaylene Cossar, in a tight battle that came down to a sudden

death question. John said “It never ceases to amaze me of people’s

generosity to support the youth of the town. We have fantastic

sponsors that help us encourage players with weekly awards, help

reduce the costs to the kids and enable us to provide opportunities to

every junior player. The Tauli’i Williamson donation is another great

example.”

This year the club introduced a policy of first year players in the under

16 competition being required to wear helmets. John said “As a

committee, player protection and safety first has always been our

philosophy and as evidence increases of long term damage to players

suffering concussion we have tried to be proactive”. The club have

recently received a $3000.00 grant from Vic Health- Active Club

Grants to purchase additional helmets. “We are grateful that Vic

Health has provided us with this vital funding, and we thank Alex

Holt from the Wedderburn Football Club and Bruce Hando from

Sportfirst St Arnaud for assisting us with research into the most

efficient style of helmet, he said”. “This enables us to have helmets as

a club asset, reducing the need for each player to incur the cost, he

explained”.

The Junior Club season will conclude with a vote count on Sunday

21st at 10.30 at the social rooms.

The Charlton & District Carers’ Support Group met at the Charlton

Bowling Club on Tuesday 12th August 2014. Although our numbers

were down the members present enjoyed playing Indoor Bowls. For

some members this was their first attempt at the game and found

staying on the mat a challenge. Thank you to Elsie & Lyle Hunter

and Isabel Roberts for showing us the finer points of the game.

On Tuesday 9th September there will be a free information session

in Bendigo on “Talking About Dementia”. This session is for any

person in the community who would like to know more about

memory loss, dementia and ways to reduce the risk of developing

dementia.

On Wednesday, 17th September a “Mingle” for carers will also be

held in Bendigo. The Mingle is a time for carers to nourish their

minds, bodies and spirit – relax, unwind and learn about improving

their wellbeing. Further details from Anne 54911673

The branch August meeting was Vice Presidents day” and was held at

Bernice’s home. We used the occasion with luncheon to also celebrate

“Association Day”. Vice Presidents Jan and Marj coordinated lunch

and entertainment. We enjoyed a slightly Christmas like lunch (even

though it is August, not July) with appropriate table settings for the

occasion.

Following lunch we proceeded to have quite a different format for our

meeting - around Bernice’s kitchen table, but never the less the

meeting covered all necessary business. Vice presidents day was

concluded with viewing a DVD provided by Marj. The DVD was a

summary of highlights from this year’s antiques roadshow programs

and we were enlightened by some great surprises and mysteries

revealed in the programs. We all contributed to Association Day

which is an annual occasion when every CWA branch holds fundraiser

to support general operating funds for the state association.

Our next meeting on September 15 resumes at the night time start time

of 7.30pm. Our competition will be something made by a member,

and the activity will be sharing of craft skills and preparing for the

Charlton show.

Twenty two ladies enjoyed delicious scones and wonderful

fellowship in August when two very inspiring young folk spoke to

us of a Youth Leadership Camp they had attended.

This is a camp over nine weeks at which the young people learn

skills including endurance, camping, communication and team

building.

The girls, Mary-Anne Pollard and Imogen Noone were selected,

with two others from the Wycheproof P-12college and attended

their camp at Marlo in far East Gippsland.

It was cold, often wet, and with lessons on how NOT to overturn a

Kyak, they quickly decided they would never let it happen again!

The girls then explained how they had set up a Community

Learning Project to raise money to buy water tanks for a village in

Africa- "Friends of Londiani."

They told us the devastating statistics of deaths, especially children,

from water born diseases- the women have to walk five kilometers

to collect impure water from a polluted creek and then return to

their village.

The girls hope to raise $ 1300.00 for the purchase of three 2000

lt.tanks.

Thanks to their enthusiasm and the generosity of those present at

afternoon tea, a collection of $ 157.20 was given to the girls.

They were truly inspiring and both are only 14! WELL DONE

girls.

Our interstate travellers are now home so numbers will swell again at

out next meeting. While they were away we held our monthly

meeting with our regular activities including footy tipping and

occasional jokes from Graeme Curnow and Beth Curnow would be

sadly missed if away as her funnies are just amazing and what a

tremendous almost never ending supply she has thanks Beth.

With reduced numbers we chose to focus our discussion on “

traveller’s tales” from any member who have at any time travelled

and have a story to tell. This is not only about those fortunate enough

to have travelled overseas but any member with a tale to tell and an

object related to that special and memorable event/ trip.

Marg Lamour brought a couple of rather unique souvenirs’ from a

trip to Greece and spoke of their time there. Some people brought

photos which included scenery family and friends and others such as

Marieta Doughty spoke of her travels as she has been a regular

traveller in the past.

There are many of course who

are shy and while they have

much to tell and prefer not to

do this by standing in front of

a group, they participated

anyway with questions and

comment.

Another a tale of a salesperson

in Nepal, Kathmandou to be

precise, who with his fellow

villagers worked hard at

producing lovely items of

pottery.

His Comment was “that the tourists come and look maybe take away

ideas, but unless they purchase something, and much of the work was

cheap by our prices, their work is for nothing”. These areas are very

poor and the lesson to learn for all of us who travel is that many need

our custom to survive. As an outcome the presenter bought an item

and encourages others to remember this point. If we are fortunate

enough to afford travel we need to be mindful of the needs of others.

A lovely meeting with much laughter and camaraderie .

It's fantastic to see that the girls are still practising their knitting

techniques.

At this stage we are trying to give a variety of activities so the girls

can continue making things with the skills they are learning.

We all made a little Angel and then made our own beading projects.

Bernice Kenny, Janet Stafford and Cheryl Kemp were the Cabbaritta

helpers for the session. Our usual side kick, Bev Coles was unable to

attend, but she is continually helping with supplies and support. Even

though Bronwyn Simpson couldn't attend the night, her beading

materials certainly aided our supplies as did the beads

Sue Walsh donated. We have also had donations of lace

and

other sewing materials from Annette Sheriff, a donation

from Naomi Fitzpatrick, knitting supplies from Janet

Stafford and yarn and other goods from Cindy Dowell.

We have had great support from other Cabbaritta

members, with atl east two helpers attending each

session. Thank you everyone for your support.

Just a quick reminder that we will each be making a

scrap book page in September, so please ensure you

have two photos in your junior bags and any other 'bits

and bobs' you think would look good. Let your photos guide you

when determining a theme for your page. We are looking forward to

learn this craft from Cherie Walsh.

The annual subscription fee is due in October. This $20.00 cost can be

paid at any time before November. If you have decided you do not

wish to participate in Cabbaritta Junior CWA, or if you would like to

be part of this group but didn't start when the other girls did, please let

me know by phone. Contact details:

September 2014

As the date approaches (September 13/14), those involved in the

Weekend at Brocky's are astounded at the interest and bookings so far.

The official website has had in excess of 2550 likes and it appears

that there are many "rev heads" that remember the golden eras that

involved Phil and his brother Peter (the King of the Mountain).

Phil is sponsoring the Weekend idea to remember the "good old days"

when he was co-driver with Peter, as well as driving in his own

right at Bathurst and other well known raceways around the country.

A Charlton local since 2012, Phil has many memories and is only too

willing to share these on the weekend.

For those attending the event a show bag will be available at

the theatre foyer, containing information about the local shops open

during their stay

The weekend kicks off with a show at the Rex featuring rare motor

sports footage from the 60's 70's and 80's and a couple of short

archival films made by Ford and Chevrolet in 1920. Enthusiasts will

more than be intrigued by the methods in how far technology has

progressed. The afternoon will finish with a wine tasting at the theatre

for those that attended with a selection of quality wines from our own

Wayne Litton, a well known connoisseur of the products on show.

Cost for the afternoon is $25.

The Golden Grains museum will be open during this interval of events

for an interesting look at Charlton’s history.

The evening session will be held at the Charlton Motel where many

visitors to our town have already booked in to enjoy a two course

meal (drinks at own cost) and be taken back to an era when racing

was a "life and death" occupation. Given the technology available in

motor vehicles today it will be interesting to hear the opinions of the

guests, including John McCarthy, who was the head racing mechanic

and was instrumental in Peter Brock's 1975 Bathurst win. John had a

great career with other race teams including Bill Patterson racing,

Alan Grice Racing and Roadways Racing among others. His forte will

be just how cars were designed, developed and prepared for the track,

long before the advent computers, and modern communication

between the driver and the pit. There are other top drivers and

mechanics from that era, who will be available over the weekend to

answer any questions. The evening kicks off at 6pm, and the price for

this part of the weekend is $50. An investment in the past, we would

think.

Sunday morning will be a viewing of the 2 ex-racing Toranas, that

won the Australian Touring Car Championship with both Peter Brock

and Colin Bond behind the wheels and a replica of Murray Carter’s

XC model Falcon race car that traversed Bathurst "all those years

ago". These will be available to drool over and take photos of from

9am, at The Travellers Rest. The Charlton Lions Club will be

providing a hot breakfast...again at user cost, but in our experience

with a local service club catering, those attending should not be

disappointed with what is on offer.

It is hoped, before our visitors leave Charlton they may take some

time to explore our retail strip and sample some fine coffee, cakes and

imbibe in some serious retail therapy, before departing on their

homeward journey.

Charlton Action for World Development Group (AWD) is pleased to present

Beatriz’s War at the Rex Cinema Charlton on Friday October 3 at 8 pm.

Beatriz’s War was made in a country with the smallest film industry in the world, yet

it shone in the country with the world’s biggest, winning the top prize in the

prestigious International Film festival of India.

After a sold-out season in Dili, Beatriz’s War was seen by over 100,000 people

across Timor Leste during the dry season, with a travelling outdoor cinema program.

The film has an epic span covering a 24 year period. It’s a bold reworking of the 16 th

century French ‘Martin Guerre’ transposed to Portuguese Timor during the

Indonesian occupation of the small colony.

The film focuses on the life women lived under the occupation, their struggles, fears,

loves and strengths. It’s been described as a ‘love story written in blood’ and is a

passionate story of one woman’s conviction to remain true to the man she loves and

the country for which she fought.

This astonishing film was made guerrilla-style by the very men and women who

fought in the armed resistance and the clandestine movement to achieve

independence.

After screening at home in Timor Leste Beatriz’s War came to Melbourne for a

limited season at The Nova in Carlton before travelling to the other capital cities.

Charlton AWD supported Dili Film Works in their setting up and is delighted to be

able to continue this association and to bring their first feature film to Charlton and

district. So mark Friday October 3rd on your calendar and come along and see this

award winning film.

Tickets are $15 which includes a supper of wine and nibbles.

Tickets will be available from The Circle 54911003 or Jo Russell 54911528

The first 2 sessions held have created great interest from the participants.

Sixteen attended the Men’s Shed artists talk, 8 at the Farm Site. The final talk is

on September 4th. 10.30am. at the Shire Hall Supper Room.

Through the series of artist talks and the creation of site-specific artworks

Rowlands introduced his practice to a

broad section of the community.

This engagement opened up new ways

of considering contemporary art within

the context of the rural landscape and

country communities.

We especially look forward to the

exhibition night on September 19th, the

culmination of the project.

The project was supported by Regional

Arts Victoria, Australian Government

Regional Arts Fun, and Charlton Arts

Inc.

During this term at Charlton College, the Grade 3 and 4 students have

been learning about caring for our environment. They have focussed

on how they can use the 3 R’s – reduce, reuse and recycle. Their task

was that they had to think about how they could reuse a soft drink

bottle. They came up with some wonderfully creative ideas.

Tyler Riley made a bird feeder; Charlotte Stewart made a flower pot

Thursday 24th July our Year 7 & 8 Badminton teams travelled to

Kyabram to compete in the Loddon Mallee Region Badminton

Competition. Although some students were a bit rusty going into

the day, all students did their best and came away with some

pleasing results. The Year 8 Boys and Year 7 Girls ended the day

on top and will now travel to Melbourne later in the term to

compete in the State Championships.

On Friday, the 8th of August, as part of the English program, Year 7 students attended the Bendigo Writers Festival. Students participated in

the following sessions; Never Enough Pears and Sheep and Wombats (with author Jackie French & Bruce Whatley), and Fractured Fairy

tales (with Keith Austin). Jackie French told the students stories of her wombats, including those of the famous Mothball, from her picture

storybook ‘A Diary of a Wombat’. She was enthusiastic in her delivery, and taught the students how to speak ‘wombat’! In the session with

author Keith Austin, students learnt how he used original dark fairy-tale in his own novels. Austin explained his love of the horror genre,

and how he develops characters based on real people and stories he has heard back. Students also participated in an interactive exhibition in

Dudley House with author-illustrator, Chris Kennett. They watched Kennet construct a character on Photoshop from recommendations of

the audience. This was a fantastic opportunity for the Year 7 students to interact with renowned authors and illustrators. Congratulations to

the Year 7 students for winning some great novels by Gabrielle Wong for our library. Miss Harrison and Mrs Fitz were so impressed with

the behaviour of the Year 7 students, we had a great day!

The beautiful weather on the weekend of 30th & 31st August was ideal

for players participating in the Charlton Croquet Club’s Annual

Players from Boort, Brunswick, Essendon, Maryborough, Shepparton,

Swan Hill & Charlton competed over the 2 days.

Section 1 (Handicap Range from -3 to 5) was won by Josh Wilson

(Brunswick) with Ian Bassett (Shepparton) runner up. Both players

won 3 games but Josh had the better nett points.

In Section 2 (Handicap Range 7 to 11) local Charlton players were

successful. Anne Kenny was the winner with Barb Dalrymple runner

up. Once again both players won 3 games but Anne had the better nett

points.

The 2014/15 season opening day will be on Saturday, 6th September at

1pm. This year opening day will be held as a Charity Day with

proceeds going to the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Golf Croquet &

Association players are encouraged to attend and any new players

would be most welcome.

Golf Croquet has already commenced Pennant and had a good win

over Boort last week. Association Pennant will commence on 8th

September.

WWI—The Charlton Story: September 1914 WWI—The Charlton Story is a

monthly segment produced by the

Charlton Golden Grains Museum. It

draws mainly on reports and stories

from the East Charlton Tribune

detailing the impact of the war on the

Charlton community each month,

exactly 100 years ago.

On the Home Front As the war entered its second

month, the Charlton community was

still relatively untouched as life simply

became busier. In addition to normal

activities such as the Annual Charlton

Show and the local football finals in

which Charlton won the Wycheproof

District Premiership against Narraport,

activities relating to the war effort now

also played a part in their lives.

Patriotic fervour was still building

and fundraising efforts for the Patriotic

Fund were going strongly. Meetings to

raise funds took place throughout the

district as various concerts and rallies

were held. In addition to cash donations,

women began making goods to send to

the front and items were donated for

auction including pigs, cows, wheat and

whisky. The Charlton Shire donated £50

to the Patriotic Fund. Some councillors

wanted the Shire to commit £100 but it

was decided the cash strapped Shire

could not afford it. Novel ways of

raising funds were always popular and a

fancy dress football match proved to be

very entertaining.

By the end of September, funds and

goods totalling over £1200 were

donated from various sources including:

Horses £450 0 0

Charlton £457 10 0

Buckrabanyule £82 8 6

Lake Marmal £5 2 0

Charlton Shire Council £50 0 0

Granite Flat £52 6 6

Fort Cameron £43 11 6

Charlton Ladies £44 4 0

Yeungroon Ladies £9 15 6

A meeting was called to form a

Charlton Shire Patriotic League and a

moderate but enthusiastic attendance

was reported. Both ladies and

gentlemen were able to join for one

shilling and would be given a small

union jack to wear on their coat lapels.

The main aims of the league were to

help raise funds for the Patriotic Fund,

arrange farewells and receptions for

leaving and returning soldiers, maintain

correspondence with soldiers and ensure

that their dependants received assistance

from the Lord Mayor’s fund if needed.

Our Soldiers

Local Charlton men continued to

join the war effort and several more

were farewelled from the town. James

Anderson, Reg Fevin (an Englishmen)

and Mounted Constable Charles Trewin

all received enthusiastic farewells.

These often involved entertainment at a

local hotel or hall, the presentation of a

gift and a send off at the railway station

with the local band and school children

in attendance. Constable Trewin in

particular received a hearty send off as

he was held in very high esteem by the

local towns people. Some servicemen

returned home on leave from the

training camp and were often treated to

another hearty farewell upon leaving.

By the end of September the

Charlton and district men who were

reported as having enlisted included:

WAS Dunlop Cyril Tonkin

St. Martin’s - Our history

In Charlton there is a great goodwill and co-operation between the

Anglican and Uniting church congregations. This was especially

evident after the 2011 floods. But it goes back even earlier.

In January 1876 the Vicar of St. Arnaud ( The Reverend J.B. Start)

organised a meeting at Charlton to set up a Church of England

congregation in our town. He wrote to the Bishop of Ballarat (The

Right Reverend Samuel Thornton) and he attended and preached at

the first Anglican service in Charlton in the Presbyterian church!

We know that his text was John 1.36 “Behold, the Lamb of God” and

that he preached “in a very earnest and impressive manner” but we

don’t know what he said. Next morning the Bishop baptised twelve

children in the Presbyterian church.

Isn’t it great that there has been 138 years of goodwill between our

two denominations here in Charlton?

I have had in my possession for some years, 2 World War 1

medals belonging to Charles Albert Sullivan.

Investigating into his back ground, I found that he lived in

Charlton for some years prior to his death in December 1974 at

the age of 76.

At this time he was Caretaker of Charlton Park, and lived in the

Hut at the park.

I have obtained his war records which give his father as his next

of kin, and there is no next of kin on his grave here at Charlton.

He joined the army in Melbourne at the age of 18 in 1916, where

he put his occupation as a Groom. Charlie was only 160 cm tall

(5’4”).

His medals were found in a tobacco tin in the old Smithy on our

farm at Wooroonook in the 1980’s.

On returning to Australia in 1919, having been in England and

France, Charlie’s addresses were in N.S.W and in Stanhope

Victoria.

I would like to find out some more of Charlie’s time in Charlton

as I want to develop a history to put with his medals.

If anyone recalls Charlie, and can fill in anymore details, would

you please contact me on 54 911 308.
