ENERGY EFFICIENCY WATER CONSERVATION WASTE MANAGEMENT GREEN SPACES COMMUNITY WELLNESS NORTHWOOD’S COMMITMENT
From the beginning, the original developers of Ballantyne, a nationally renowned, 2,000-acre community, recognized the importance of creating environmental sustainability within the office environment as well as amongstcustomers and the community. Over two decades ago, Ballantyne’s master planners began their commitment to creating a strong infrastructure from family farmland.
Long stewards of the environment, Northwood Office remains committed to sustainable business practices. Home to more than 2.5 million square feet of LEED® Gold-certified office space, Ballantyne dedicated large areas of open space for healthy living including 16 miles of sidewalks, bike paths and numerous parks and ponds.
Northwood not only epitomizes responsible development but also engages in comprehensive sustainable business practices. Northwood also drives community outreach by encouraging sustainability awareness through its annual Earth Day Event, Native Bird Nesting Program and ongoing recycling efforts throughout the year.
Ballantyne continues to rise amongst the ranks as one of the most environmentally sound, mixed-use communities in the nation. Incorporating sustainable site development measures, water and energy conservation, materials re-use, waste reduction and indoor environmental features help continually evolve the Ballantyne community. The result is that workers in Ballantyne, residents and visitors alike enjoy a healthier, cost-efficient, comfortable environment that creates an inviting place to live, work and recreate.
If you would like to learn more about our sustainability efforts in Ballantyne or want to share suggestions or feedback, please email our sustainability team at [email protected]. We are always interested in discussing ways we can further enhance our practices in Ballantyne.

IRRIGATION & STORM WATER / CUSTODIAL SERVICES
Northwood selects native and drought-resistant plants to further reduce the amount of water needed for irrigation.
Monthly and weekly audits of irrigation systems help locate leaks and make timely repairs to reduce water loss.
Rain sensors are used to reduce irrigation during periods of natural rain fall.
Northwood implemented a storm water management plan to reduce water pollution and remove pollutants from storm water runoff, simultaneously eliminating 85% of total suspended solids within the soil on-site and preventing contamination in local drinking supplies or natural ecosystems.
Northwood captures and retains storm water in detention ponds, which is then reused as irrigation water for landscaping.
Northwood recaptures

Lawn clippings are never bagged. Instead, they are mulched and broken down into the lawn.
The 18-hole PGA golf course was certified by Audubon International in 2010 .
Plant material is selected based on its growth habit for the Charlotte region. All plants on the Ballantyne campus are viewed as native plant species to the area. This helps with water conservation and reduces ground maintenance efforts.

NORTHWOOD’S ONGOING COMMITMENT
Northwood strives for continuous improvement in sustainability and is the benchmark for responsible stewardship of all the resources we manage within our portfolio. Northwood continues to research ways we can be more efficient as an operator and steward of the land, as well as provide a healthier environment for our tenants and the greater community. The entire team is motivated to work more efficiently and explore new ways to strengthen sustainable efforts. If you have any feedback or suggestions, please contact [email protected].
Northwood is continually working torward being more sustainable. The Northwood team takes the extra step to keep the community clean by adopting a nearby street and stream. In the office, employees use mugs rather than disposable coffee cups. Recycling stations are positioned throughout the office and printers are set to print both sides of the paper while employees are encouraged to print only when necessary. To further help minimize waste, all employees have a mini garbage can made from recycled plastic on their desks.
