Paper-cutting is a verypopular folk art in China, each region having its owncharacteristicstyle.Mostofthemarehandmadebypeas-antsandfolkartiststodecoratetheirownhomesandpa-perlanterns,andothersusedforembroiderypatternsetc.

Thepasticcio“WalzerausWien”arrangedbyErichWolf-gangKorngoldandwithmusicbyJohannStrauss(fatherandson)wasfirstperformedat theViennaStadttheaterin 1930. The following year it was restaged in Londonas “Waltzes fromVienna” andaFrenchversionentitled“Valses deVienne”was produced in Paris. The success-fuloperettawasbasedontherivalrybetweenStraussthe elderandStrausstheyounger.Wehavenotbeenabletofind any Swedish performance but this set of drawingslistingSwedishartistsindicatesthatsuchaplanexisted,even if itwas never implemented.We don’t knowwhomadethedrawingsbuttheKaufmannlabelssuggestthatthey used to belong to them. Theaterkunst HermannKaufmann, founded in Berlin 1907, became theworld’sbiggest costumehouse for theatre, opera, and later alsofilmproductions.Inthe1930sthecompanyexpandedin-ternationallybutin1936HermannKaufmannhadtosellitduetopoliticalpressure.

The fabric is beautifully roll-er-printedand/orblock-printedincolourfulfloralandgeometricdesigns.Analbumwhichused tobelong toaFrench cotton mill for upholstery, curtain and apparelfabrics.Contemporarymarbledboardswithclothspine,

printedpaper label “Coton 1825–30” to spine (partly re-moved),bindingrubbed.TheWesterntextileindustrywasdeveloped in theearly 18thcenturywhen theadvancedtechniquesofprinting andpaintingclothwere import-edfromIndia.Bythebeginningofthe1800’sEuropeanmillswereproducingtensofthousandsofpatternsayearusing the roller-printing process. In France (after 1760)factoriesfortheproductionofprintedcottonsopenedinNantes,Rouen,andLyonsbutthemostfamouscentrewasatJouy-en-JosasnearParis(“ToiledeJouy”).Thiskindofledgerorpatternbookisanannualorseasonalrecordofatextilemill’sproduction.Wedon’tknowwhoownedthisparticularbookbutweknowithasbelongedtoaFrenchcottonmanufacturer.First two leaves creased and somesampleshavedarkspotsinthecornersduetothepaste,otherwiseinverygoodcondition.Thisspectacularalbumcomprisingavarietyofcolourfuloriginalcottonsamplesisaninvaluablerecordofdesignhistoryaswellasasourceofinspiration.

Alovelyandimpressivewallpapercataloguefortheseason1925/26with striking patterns in contemporary Frenchstyle.IncludesboldgeometricalandstylisedpatternsintypicalArtDecostylebutalsosomemoretraditionalflo-ralandornamentalpatterns.The1920sareknownastheGoldenAgeofWallpaper.DuringtheArts&Craftsmove-ment, led byWilliamMorris, wallpaper became an af-fordable,mass-producedalternativetoexclusivesilkandtapestrywallcoverings.Departmentstoressetupstudioswhichemployedthebestartistsanddesignerswhocre-atedcustomerpatternbooks,ofwhichthisisagoodex-ample.ThecompanyGillet&Filswasfoundedin1920andchangeditsnametoGillet-Thaonin1935.

Both letters were sent to Constantinople addressed toMarcoBembo,aVenetiannoblemanandmerchantwhoatthetimewasbasedinPera,byhisbusinesspartnerFranc-escoZilberti. The letterswerewritten at Foça (close totoday’s Izmir) on theAegean coast ofAnatolia. Zilbertireportsaboutthenegotiationsforpurchasingacargoofalum, a valuable commodity used as amordant for tex-tile dyes which for centuries had been imported intoEuropefromtheByzantineEmpire.AftertheTurkscap-turedConstantinoplein1453,alumbecamemoredifficultto acquire.A decade later large quantities of alumwerefoundinthevicinityofTolfa,asmalltownnotfarfromRome.ThemineswereownedbythePapacywhichwasdeterminedtoensuremaximumprofitsfromthissource.ThePapacy formed cartels ofminers, bankers, refiners,and traders, and thereby tried to create amonopoly onaluminEurope.However,theVenetians,havingsignedapeacetreatywithMehmetIIin1479,continuedtotradeinTurkishalum,ignoringthreatsofdeportation.

In the first letter Zilberti explains that a dispatch of acargoofalumhasbeendelayedbecausethelocalpashaisawayobservinga local religiousholidaybayram.Zilbertidescribes in detail the negotiations concerning his dif-ferencesofopinionwiththepashaandvariousnotarieson theweighingof the cargo,noting the variationsbe-tweentheTurkish,VenetianandGenoesecantara(aunitofweight).FurtherheinformsBemboaboutthequalitiesofsacksbestsuitedfortransportingalum,observingthatthose they brought with themwere considered unsuit-able,smallerhalf-sizesacksoftight-wovencottonbeingbetter to prevent leakage through the cloth. He writesabout the locusts having ruined the cotton crop in the

threepreviousyears,barterisbeingpossibleinthevillagebelowas there isnocurrency incirculation,etc. In thesecond letterZilberti reportsabout thedifficultieswithdeliveringtherequireddocumentationtoGallipoli,withsomefurtherdetailsaboutthecargoofalum,andthathehassoldsomescarletyarnfromPaduatothepilotoftheship,Nochin,whouseditforthepurposeofransomingalocalslave,etc.ThepapersprovideagoodinsightintoVenetiantradecommunicationduringthelate15thcen-tury, especiallywith regard toOttomanalum importedfromAnatolia.
