Contempo-rary red paper-covered boards ruled in gilt, red calf spines lettered and decorated in gilt. Partly with some foxing to the text but the plates are clean and bright.

First edition of a very charming and attractive work on China with the most wonderful illustrations engraved after William Alexander, a British artist. Illustrated with por-traits of emperors, mandarins, ladies and soldiers from dif-ferent regions. Other illustrations depict palaces, temples, fortresses, the Great Wall, military posts, barges, pheas-ants, arms, audiences, etc. William Alexander (1767–1816) travelled to China as draughtsman with Lord Macartney’s embassy to the Emperor 1792–94. 2. [ART NOUVEAU / JUGEND]Meubles – Referenzen. Saison 1903/1904. [A custom-er book with original upholstery patterns painted in gouache]. Germany 1903–4. € 4 500A folder comprising 51 mounted plates with original designs for furniture fabrics executed in lavish gouache colours, all in typical Jugend style. The motifs are clearly inspired by natural forms and structures, particularly the curved lines of flowers and plants. The pattern sizes vary from 30–36 cm x 38–53 cm. Bound in original half cloth boards, spine with some damage, paper label titled “Meubles Referenzen. Sai-son 1903/1904” pasted on upper cover.

We assume that this unique design catalogue was used by a furniture store or upholsterer who provided products made to order. The beautiful colourful patterns are preserved in an exceptional condition. An impressive and very rare sur-vival of a customer book of this kind.

First edition, limited to 615 copies, this is no. 151. A spec-tacular work devoted to the avant-garde theatre in Europe, Russia and United States. Illustrated with numerous pic-tures of costumes, set designs, staging details etc. used in the most ground-breaking performances of the previous fif-teen years. Includes photographic illustrations and brightly coloured pochoir images. Designers include Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger, Alexander Rodchenko, Alexandra Exter, Enrico Prampolini, Norman Bel Geddes, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and directors Vsevolod Meyerhold, Erwin Piscator, Max Reinhardt, and many more. A delightful Art Deco work on the technique of pochoir and batik illustrated with brightly coloured patterns after drawings by Geerard Johan Lerven. A Dutch edition was published in the same year.

As issued, uncut and partly unopened, in original blue printed wrappers, spine with some loss. Copy of John Lawson.

The work starts with brief descriptions of the twenty-one mission stations followed by a “Brief account of the trans-lations and printing the Scriptures at Serampore, to June 1814”. At end a list of books which had been distributed from the Serampore Printing office. The Serampore Mis-sion Press was established in 1800 by William Carey and other British Baptist missionaries for the initial purpose of publishing translations of scripture. BIRD, ISABELLA LUCY (MRS. BISHOP) (1831–1904)Popular British lady traveller and the first woman to become a member of the Royal Geographical Society in 1892.

Isabella Bird did not begin her travelling career until rather late in life having been occupied earlier with the care of her parents. Suffering from depression and from a spinal complaint, she was recommended to travel by her doctor. Travel became an addiction, leading to jour-neys all over the world. Published at home and abroad, her books became immensely popular and were reprint-ed many times over. Robinson p. 82–3.

Publisher’s decorated blue cloth, spine faded. Old inscription on half title. Isabella visited the Rocky Mountains in the winter of 1873 on her way back to England from the Sandwich Is-lands. She travelled from San Francisco alone by horse to Lake Tahoe, the Rocky Mountains and Colorado. Robinson p. 82.

Old ownership signature. In a few places some insignificant staining but overall a very clean and fine copy.

Fourth edition which is a reprint of the first (1880). Isa-bella travelled extensively Japan. She went north of Nikko into remoter parts where she was the first European to be seen. She accurately describes the inner life of Japan and the characters and habits of the people in a country which had long been closed to the outside world. Her work also in-cludes an interesting account of the Aino of Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. Cordier BJ 631. Theakstone p. 23.

Her vivid and interesting account of the country and its people, traditions, politics, etc. provided a reliable source of information on a rather unknown coun-try in Europe at the time. This narrative deals with her travels in China in 1897 along the Yangtze River from Shanghai visiting Hangzhou (Zhejiang province), Yichang (Hubei), Wan Hsien (Hebei), Nanjing (Kiangsu), and several places in Sichuan province. Her book is based on her letters and diary notes, and the illustrations are mainly taken from her own photographs. A lovely copy. Cordier BS 355. Yakushi (1984) B170.

This account covers Bird’s two-year journey through little-known parts of Persia and eastern part Asia Minor. She joined Major Herbert Saw-yer of the Indian army on a rough journey from Baghdad to Tehran. After visiting the Bakhtiari tribes of south-west Persia and she continued her journey north through Kurd-istan, Azerbaijan, to Trebizond (Trabzon) on the Black Sea coast of north-eastern Turkey. An important account of the campaign against the Otto-mans by the Princes of the Holy Roman Empire under the Emperor Leopold I, and of the Imperial army in Croatia and Transylvania. Contemporary half red cloth decorated in gilt and black, rebacked with red morocco, spines ruled in gilt with five raised bands and title-labels. Recased with new end-papers. Occasionally some staining and a few leaves with dog-ears. First edition.

Lady Anne Blunt was the granddaughter of Lord Byron and the wife of the famous Arab scholar and poet Wilfrid Scaw-en Blunt. The couple travelled extensively in Arabia and the Middle East from the late 1870s normally without guides or the usual caravans. During this period Lady Anne became fluent in Arabic and she gained insights into the people and their customs. Her journals give a comprehensive view of desert life. Robinson p. 6.

Second edition (first Maulmein 1852) which was revised and rewritten by F.D. Phinney who states in the preface that he has altered the style of the work and “rewrit-ten the Romanised Burmese words as closely as possible in accordance with the Hunterian system”. Comprises accounts of life and works of the renowned Czech animators Jiri Trnka, Karel Zeman and Hermina Tyrlová. The appendix shows a table of international prizes won by Czech puppet films and a detailed index. A rare and important document of film history. € 460

DAVID-NEEL, ALEXANDRINE (1868–1969)A distinguished scholar on Tibetan Buddhism.

A French-born adventurer and devoted Buddhist who spent a great part of her life travelling in the East. She was the first western woman to reach the forbidden city of Lhasa. She studied all aspects of Tibetan society, mas-tered the language and sought to investigate the prac-tice as well as the philosophy of Buddhism.

First edition, simultaneously published in London and Paris in 1927. Alexandrine spent several years in prepara-tory study of Tibetan customs and language before she started out on her adventurous journey to the holy city of

Lhasa in 1923. She disguised herself as a Tibetan nun by darkening her hair with Chinese ink and lengthening it with black yak braids. She rubbed a mixture of cocoa and crushed charcoal into her face, and dressed in a coarse woollen Tibetan robe. Together with her young compan-ion Lama Yongden she crossed the wild, unexplored parts of Tibet for four and half months before she finally entered Lhasa which at the time was closed to women. Text volume partly with some light marginal staining and title with some offsetting from frontispiece. The second title page somewhat dusty with remains of original cover at in-ner margin. Second edition, the first was published in 1826 with a second issue in 1838.

A momentous work giving a new approach to the education of deaf-mute children. Czech’s system of communication combined elements of the tonal speech technique devel-oped by Heinecken with the sign language of the famous Abbé de l’Epée. The beautiful plates depicting numerous objects and actions were designed by Czech to provide an effective, simple method by which the teacher could com-municate complicated ideas to the student. Lady Florence (1857–1905) was a Scottish writer, feminist and traveller. In 1881 she and her husband travelled to South Africa to cover the First Boer War. She was the first official woman war correspondent and interviewed the Zulu king Cetshwayo who was being held in detention by the British. Robinson, Wayward women, pp. 65–6.

With some wear, a few with small paper loss. Housed in original pictorial paper covered box, worn, later paper pasted on inside of the lids. Size: 17.8 x 17.4 cm. Text in German, French and English on the back cover. Over-all a very charming game evidently with an educational purpose.

The pieces create six different puzzles: a painting with a ro-mantic theme in oriental style; a front facade of a mansion; letters of the alphabet and symbols; numbers and calcula-tions; different geometric patterns; and b/w images of ani-mals, flowers and people.

Gray on South Aus-tralian animals, amphibians and reptiles.

”In 1839 Eyre made two expeditions, from Adelaide to Lake Torrens, and from Port Lincoln to Streaky Bay. In June 1840 he set out on his most notable expedition, westward from Adelaide along the Great Australian Bight, with one white companion (Baxter) and three natives. Baxter was mur-dered by two of the natives, and Eyre and the remaining Aborigine reached Albany only after a desperate journey. First edition. Étienne Fourmont (1683–1745) was one of the first European scholars to write grammars of the Chinese language. Supported by official patronage he published the ’Meditationes sinciae’ in Paris in 1737 and five years later this work. They were the first works printed with Chinese characters in Paris. Fourmont based his works on Francisco Varo’s ’Arte de la lengua mandarina’ published at Canton in 1703 and more importantly on Joseph Henri-Marie de Pré-mare’s ’Notitia linguae sinicae’ still in manuscript form at the time (first published in 1831).

”Fourmont’s interpretation of Chinese appears to be in-fluenced by the perception of the Orient prevalent at that time, and fostered the European interest in China. Four-

mont linked the study of languages to the understanding of the origin of human civilization when speculating about the 214 Chinese radicals found in the Chinese dictionaries he examined in Paris: he read the sequence of the radicals as revealing the dawn of Chinese civilization. Intrigued by the classification of characters in Chinese dictionaries, he concluded that this system reveals that the alleged ’inven-tors of the Chinese language’ proceeded in a philosophical way attributing to each character a component indicating its ’rang d’être’ (rank in the category of being). Fourmont considered each character as manifesting the essence of what it signified but also as painting the sound and speak-ing to the eyes. Even though this interpretation proved to be original, his explanation of syntax and morphology was mainly copied from Chinese grammars written by mission-aries. By applying a ’philosophical reading’ to the Chinese characters, and by continuing to use Latin to describe Chi-

In 1832 the British East India Company sent a commercial mission along the northern coast of China with the aim of opening up new markets for Britain. Lindsay was in charge of the expedition and Gützlaff was the interpreter. The reports give a description of the situ-ation in the northern ports on the China coast and Korea. The mission showed that the right to trade could only be permitted at Canton. The reports by Gützlaff (pp. 7–15) and Lindsay (pp.16–106) are here published for the first time. He is known for compiling scientific works on the Herero language. British Library has one work titled “Omahongie uokuleza Motyheren…” published in Gütersloh in 1861 (perhaps the first part of this primer ?). We haven’t been able to find any library copy of this work.

The first serious work devoted exclusively to Chinese snuff bottles compiled by Henry C. Hitt, one of the earliest west-ern collectors of these objects. The book describes different kinds of bottles with details about date, material, work-manship, colour, size, etc. together with hand-drawn illus-trations. Arranged by different materials: jade, quartz, am-ethyst, hair crystal, carnelian, agate, coral, many different kinds of glass, amber, ivory, ceramic and porcelain. Eight additional pages printed on black paper with descriptions of more bottles (not found in the book) are loosely inserted. A charming and impressive handmade work which seems very rare. A reprint was published in 1945.

31.5 x 23.4 cm. Several wormholes, mainly in margins not affecting the illustrations. Original decorated paper wrap-pers, worn and with wormholes, silk ties. Title label pasted on front wrapper (missing on the first volume). A fabulous large-sized contemporary manuscript of a collection of 100 flower arrangements of Ikenobo rikka style. Two different kinds are mentioned; Rokkakudo and Takada Anryubo. The beautiful illustrations are finely drawn and painted in lovely delicate colours, all well preserved.

In Japan the custom of placing flowers on the altar (kuge) began when Buddhism was introduced from China and Korea in the sixth century. Subsequently the Japanese de-veloped a more profound tradition of flower-arranging. In the 15th century a Buddhist priest Ikenobo Senkei cre-ated the first form of ikebana, called tatehana or “standing flowers”. The Ikenobo style of ikebana was founded in the 16th century by the Buddhist monk Senno Ikenobo at the temple Rokkakudo (Chohoji) temple in Kyoto. He compiled a manuscript titled “Senno Kuden” (1542) including new ideas for his disciples. He claimed that Ikenobo is not only the mere act of appreciating beautiful flowers, it is more im-

portant to observe the inner spirit of the plants and express their natural form. The successor Senko Ikenobo II created a more refined style called rikka, in which the beauty of a natural landscape is expressed. Rikka became popular not only with monks, aristocrats and warriors but also with wealthy townspeople. Later the need for a more simplified and dignified style of ikebana arose, resulting in formalisa-tion of the shoka style. This is a manuscript copy of “Shin-sen Heikazu” (1698) including rikka drawings mainly by Senyo Ikenobo and his disciples.

The Smithsonian has one volume (the first) but otherwise we haven’t been able to find any copy in a western institu-tion.

Size: 30.4 x 24.7 cm. A collection of beautiful and interesting paper samples from the 17th century up to the 20th century from Echizen, part of modern Fukui prefec-ture. An orihon folding album with the samples mounted on 20 double pages of blue attractive paper on card board with Uemura’s handwritten captions and notes. Bound in cotton and silk brocade and kept in cloth covered box, both hand titled. Uemura Rokuro (1894–?) was one of the most influential scholars of traditional dyeing techniques of both cloth and paper in Japan, and wrote several signifi-cant books on the subjects. This album compiled by Uemura comprises many different kinds of paper including plain dyed colours, decorated papers, suminagashi marbling, etc. Several of them have captions and annotations in beau-tiful calligraphy by Uemura. Apart from being a scholarly guide this is a beautiful piece of art. In perfect condition.

With descriptions in Japanese. As issued with double folded leaves in the orien-tal style within original decorated paper covered boards, title labels on upper covers. Housed in original worn cloth folder. A very attractive set with brilliant images in fine im-pression and subtle colours.

During the Ming and Qing dynas-ties it formed the basis of elementary education. The text is arranged in three-character verses for easy memorisa-tion. Original paper covers, decorated front cover, worn. Pub-lished jointly by the famous printing house Unsodo and the Kyoto affiliate of the department store Takashimaya. The rather large-sized book depicts wonderful creative flam-boyant patterns sweeping the length of the kimono clearly inspired by motifs from nature with images of plants, flow-ers, trees etc. No records in OCLC or Japanese library da-tabases, so perhaps this is the only volume ever published.

Tyra Kleen (1874–1951), Swedish artist and author, was edu-cated in Germany and Paris and spent many years travel-ling abroad. She illustrated her own travel accounts. This work devoted to temple dancers in Bali describes the differ-ent kinds of dances (Legong, Tjalong Arong and Djoged), their history and background, the costumes and the music. The text is accompanied by plates depicting clothes, head garments, dancing movements, and musicians. Including twenty-one beautiful plates of dancers with exquisite col-ourful adornments.

The first work is written as a diary dealing with Louis Des Hayes’ stay in Denmark and his preparations for a diplo-matic mission to Moscow regarding a commercial treaty for the Baltic Sea trade. Includes descriptions of various parts of Denmark, Schleswig-Holstein and the Baltic countries. The second work recounts the journey of Quiclet to the Levant in 1658. He visited the cities of Ragusa, Sarajevo, Belgrade and Andrianople (Edirne). At end a description of Constantinople. It was published posthumously by Jean Promé. Blackmer 1360. Weber 317 (Quiclet).

One of two editions dated 1814 printed at Serampore by the Mission press. (The other edition has fewer pages, only 317 lvs). Marshman’s grammar is often referred to as the ’Clavis sinica’, which appears on the half-title. It is a ground breaking work, based on the idea that the grammar of the

Chinese language should be sought in the ’purest works’, such as the Confucian classics, rather than in colloquial us-age. Marshman’s previous publication “Dissertation on the Chinese Language and Character” (1809) was the earliest known printed work with romanisation of the Chinese for English speakers.

Serampore, a historical city in the state of West Bengal was part of Danish India under the name of Frederiksnagore from 1755 to 1845.

The Mission Press was established in 1800 by the Serampore Trio; the British missionaries William Carey, William Ward and Joshua Marshman. It was the foremost press in Asia at this time and printed more than 200 000 copies of books in forty different languages between 1801–32. The important achievement of the Mission press for Chinese works was the preparation of the movable type of Chinese characters.

”The crucial new feature of the 19th century was the rapidly increasing flow of public information on the Chinese lan-guage. In the Danish colony of Serampore, India, the Bap-tist missionary J. Marshman produced a remarkable well-organised and thoughtful survey, his ’Elements of Chinese Grammar. Clavis Sinica’ (1814), which may be read with profit to this day” (Harbsmeier). Cordier BS 1661. The text is revised throughout, the preface expanded, and with an appendix (pp 159–66) not present in the first edition. It’s an important work about the history of the Manchu invasion and conquest of the Chinese empire in the first half of the 17th century.

Martini was an Italian-born Jesuit, historian and cartogra-pher who spent many years in China, travelling extensively throughout the country. A Chinese version of the official Communist Party transla-tion of the ’Communist Manifest’ produced at the height of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution in its centre of power. Beautifully carved woodblock printed edition care-fully designed in the manner of the very finest early Chi-nese books. The text is based on the 14th printing of the 6th letterpress edition of the “Manifesto” as it was issued by the People’s Publishing House in 1964. The work commences with the famous political slogan “Quan shijie wuchanzhe, lianheqilai” – Workers of the World Unite!

First leaf defective with some loss of text. Several leaves frayed at outer margin, paper is very brittle, a few leaves restored and some with clean tears (no loss), a few ink annotations in Tibetan. Contemporary wood covers. Provenance: Staf-fan Rosén, professor of Mongolian and Korean at Uppsala, Sweden.

Originally published in Mongolian in 1650, this is apparent-ly the second edition. The Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment or Complete Enlightenment is a Mahayana Buddhist sutra. It is arranged in twelve chapters as a series of discussions on meditation practice. Traditionally it is attributed to Bud-dhatrata, an Indian or Kashmiri monk who translated the work from Sanskrit in 693. However some scholars believe it to be Chinese in origin and written in the late 7th or early 8th century A.D. Rare first edition of the first Swedish printed work deal-ing with foreign travel. It is a Funerary Oration for Bengt Bengtsson Oxenstierna, also known as Resare-Bengt (Bengt the Traveller). Includes an appendix, with separate title, about his life and a description of his two journeys to the East based on his own diary notes. Bengt Oxenstierna, born into a Swedish noble family, was educated in Germany and later served at the Italian court. He travelled extensive-ly throughout Europe and made two journeys to the Orient.

The first tour, which started in 1613, took him to the Holy Land and during his second journey between 1616–1620 he travelled extensively in the Levant. He stayed in Constan-tinople for some time and later continued to Syria, Bagh-dad, Babylon, and to Isfahan where he resided for about two years. He travelled throughout Persia as far as the bor-der of India. On his return journey he went by foot through the Arabian desert to Egypt and continued by ship back to Europe. Oxenstierna’s manuscript of the second journey has been lost, and the only extant facts about the travels are to be found in the present work. Hierta 1135: “r.r.r.”. Warm-holtz 7408. The Nestorian Stele was erected in A.D. 781 in Xi’anfu and buried in 845 probably during religious suppression. It was rediscovered in 1625 by the Jesuits proving that the Chris-tian religion had made its entry into China already several centuries earlier. The stele with text in both Chinese and Syriac describes the existence of Christian communities in several places in northern China. Cordier BS 776–7. Löwen-dahl 1796.

An imposing work of this early production by the Russian exile and skilled wood engraver Jean Lébédeff. He spent many years in Paris where he became acquainted with many of the greatest artists of the day. The colouring is done by the pochoir-master Jean Saudé. The famous tales were written by the renowned poet Pushkin who is often considered the founder of modern Russian literature. Com-prises the tales: Conte du tzar Saltane; Conte du pope et de son ouvrier Balda; Conte de la prinsesse et des sept preux chevaliers; Conte du pêcheur et du petit poisson d’or and; Conte du coq d’or. An exceptionally well-preserved copy of a scarce and beautiful work.

First edition, limited to 100 copies. Rare diary account of a voyage to Ceylon and India by Jean-Baptiste Robie (1821–1910), a renowned Belgian painter. Robie’s voyage went via Suez and Aden to Ceylon where he stayed for a while at Colombo and Kandy. He continued to India where he spent several weeks in the jungles of Uttar Pradesh. He visited Calcutta, Allahabad, Agra, Delhi and also several places in Tamil Nadu. The photos depict several famous sites and temples along the route and a few of tiger and leopard hunt-ing. We haven’t been able to find any auction record of this work since 1975!

An attractive catalogue presenting the art of artificial silk with illustrations of women in the latest high fashion. The Courtaulds were silk weavers from 1794 and by 1905 producing rayon or artificial silk, the first man-made fibre.

First edition of a scarce philosophical work by a renowned Bengali philoso-pher, poet and mathematician. The work is divided into three parts, dealing in turn with the knowledge of the true, the practice of the good, and the enjoyment of the beauti-ful. Dwijendranath was the older brother of Rabindranath (the Nobel prize laureate).

First and only edition of this comprehensive work devoted to the tea industry in India. Each map presented with a text leaf listing the tea estates in the area specifying acreage, nearest railway station, telegraph office, etc. Scarce, im-pressive study of tea cultivation in India at this time.

George Thin, British medical doctor who practised in China (mainly Shanghai) between 1866 and 1874. He also served on the Committee of the North China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. Thin’s account deals with the situa-tion of foreigners in China at the time, and describes the characteristics of the common people, mandarins and the imperial family. Bound in a contemporary Turkish binding made in the western style. Full mottled calf, spine with five raised bands, speckled edges, worn and hinges cracked. With beautiful Turkish floral endpapers (Çiçekli Ebru), one of the back endpapers missing. Scholary pencil annotations in a later hand on endpapers and titles. Con-temporary ownership signatures on title.

First edition of this Turkish grammar printed in the grounds of the French embassy at Petra where the French ambassa-dor Choiseul-Gouffier established a printing press in 1787. It was the first Turkish grammar to distinguish the use of ei-ther guttural or palatal vowels within one word. The Arabic types were originally designed at Zürich for the works of Hottinger in 1659. This time the types were supplied from Basel. Viguier was apostolic prefect at Constantinople from

First edition. This work comprises an English version of Ar-rian’s account of the celebrated voyage of Nearchus of Crete from the Indus to the Tigris in 325 B.C. Nearchus, a com-mander of Alexander the Great’s fleet, undertook several independent expeditions during Alexander’s campaigns across Asia. Arrian, a Greek historian and statesman during the Roman period, wrote about events that had occurred several hundred years before his time. “My purpose was not to translate Arrian, but to make him intelligible to an English reader, and to investigate a variety of subjects, his-torical, geographical and commercial” (preface). Uncut copy in original pink marbled wrappers, faded and rubbed. Housed in a special-ly-made half-morocco box. Two plates with small marginal tear, a few leaves with light minor staining but overall a fine and unsophisticated set.

Scarce first edition, a second edition in two volumes 8vo was published the following year. The book is devoted to the islands of Indonesia; Sumatra, Java, Sumbawa, Flores and Timor. The description of Polynesia and Australia, an-nounced in the title, is not included. A comprehensive work describing the inhabitants, their customs and manners, languages, religions, costumes, governments, agriculture, arts, trade, industry, etc. The plates depict costumes, views, weapons, music instruments and houses. Pp. 373. Publisher’s black cloth, rubbed, small tear to upper cover. Signature of Gunnar Brodin on front free end-paper “Dundee, Natal d. 6/7 1920”. With additional notation that he received the book from “J.E. N [orenius]”.

The Ebenezer press was started in 1901 as a part of the Church of Sweden among the Zulu. The initiator of the printing in Zulu was the Swedish missionary Lars Peter Norenius who arrived in South Africa in the late 1880s. The press printed religious and educational works as well as material for commercial purposes. In 1911 or 1912 the Church of Sweden decided to disengage from the press, and henceforth Norenius and later his successors managed it on their own. The press continued to print most of the publi-cations of the Swedish Mission and other cooperative prot-estant missions in the area. This copy belonged to Gunnar Brodin who most likely received it from Lars Peter Norenius brother, Johan Erik Norenius.
