Personal Profile
Hello! My name is Charlie Richardson. I am currently a second year studying Industrial Design at Northumbria Univerity (BA Hons) Throughout this course I have completed several live projects for Philips Lexus and British Airways, Whislt working for smaller companies like OLEV.
I have been interested in Industrial / Product design from a young age and have been lucky enough to attend the Royal Grammar School which only broadened my horizons. After achieving awards in design for two consecutive years my thirst for further achievements increased.
Skills
My experience with design has allowed me to develop my skills in the folloowing areas, I am awlays working on and developing these skills to the highest standard possible.

Lexus Senses
When beginning this project, I started by bringing forth thoughts from the past, things that have stayed in the for front of my mind through out my life thus far. By combining my experiences with those gained form others through research I
have devised the Lexus Seasons Range.
LexuSummer When you think of Summer....What comes to mind?
This design also has the cabability to combat the effects of S.A.D(Seasonal Affect Disorder)
The Leux Summer Air Freshener will recreate all of the key aspects associated with summer. As you open it, the smell of Freshly Mown Grass will greet you as you are transported into this summer Utopia.
On the Inside...
As you peer into the lush, green texture encapsulated within. You will be transported into a summer wonderland.
LexuSpring
On the Inside...
As you open the delicate Bud of Spring you will be met with a overflowing mix of bright and woderful colours, truly placing you within the season of harmonious growth
With Spring in your hands, there will certainly be a spring in your step...
As the user opens this delightful product they replicate the theme of the delicate flower petals opening and releasing their intoxicating aroma
The Initial Sketches provided me with the basic shape and understanding of
what I believed customers needed from the product,
whilst still inkeeping with the idels of Lexus.
The smoothness of the design associates the product with more of a ‘high class’ and
quality ensured feel that Lexus strives for
Philips
This project allowed me to work with Philips to develop a product and service
that would appeal to a teenager. Getting the younger generation
interested in a product is very important for a company’s growth as brand loyalty
would increase as their age does.
A company collaboration that would benefit both parties would be the ideal solution, combining the humor appeal
of Lynx, and the Sense and Simplicity of Philips.
Father Son Experience
Interviewing male individuals of the public, 80% stated that their father had an influence on their first shave whether that was through
guidance or the technique to shaving or simply purchasing their first shaver/razor for
them.
Current Relationship
Interviews regarding the ‘First shave’ was carried out and provided many insights for us. Although for some, their father was not present to introduce them to manhood, it did not affect their relationship with their
father.
To achieve a flow of dialogue and not set out a sense of direction, we merely asked:
‘Could you tell us about your first shave.’
Embarrassed to ask father due to little hair
Eventually copied his father who has
Traumatic experience with shaving at age 7
Peer influencesMedia influencesElectric shavers cost too much for students
Mum told him to have a shave/start shaving
Introduced to shaving at age 13/14
Initial Research
The Proposal
In order to target the younger generation and introduce the brand of Philips at an earlier stage, I would propose:
- a collaboration with Unilever’s Lynx
- most dominating brand for young male cosmestics
Young Generation
Lynx
Philips partnered with them in America
Fun young brand
Unilever; not major competition
Advertises what young guys enjoy
Humourous/memorable
Men’s grooming products have leapt in popularity in recent years as increasing numbers of men worldwide have incorporated grooming into their routine. But proving just how much impact this has had, new research from Mintel reveals that beauty and personal care launches* specifically
targeted at men have increased globally by 70% over the past six years (2007/2012).
The US market increased almost 20% over the past six years (2007 – 2012), to reach $3 billion in
2012, up from $2.5 billion in 2007.
Meanwhile, the UK market grew by 12% over the same period, from £512 million in
2007 to £574 million in 2012.
Mintel’s research reveals that up to 74% of British men are defined as keen shoppers when buying personal care products. Indeed, 19% of
them say they look for haircare products designed specifically for their gender and some 42% use facial moisturisers. Furthermore, one in five
(21%) men in Britain today claim to use hand and nail products.
Fun Theory
To gain and develop an idea for fun theory I contacted Herdley Bank Primary
School in order to ‘live a day in the lfie of’ a Primary School pupil.
Through a fun survey I was able to identify a re-occuring problem within the
school.
FUN THEORY // ARC LIGHT // DEVELOPMENT
To make monotonous tasks fun for children to endure and complete. In this case to increase motivation to hang up coats, hats and other personal belongings on their chosen
Pegs
Primary Objective -
Inital Research - I was able to establish that the most mundane task that the chidlren seemed to dislike was ‘peg time’
and cleaning. (Peg Time - hanging jackets on pegs during lessons)
Key Quotations - After Interviewing each child I found that‘I dislkie Peg Time’
‘I don’t like making a mess during Art because you have to do more tidying than Art’
‘I don’t like it when my coat falls on the floor
Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3
Product - The Light Arc becomes active when the child places a coat or bag on the peg. The weight
causes the peg to move down, which in turn, completes the circuit allowing the LED tube to
light up and the Arc to come into purpose.
DEVELOPED CONCEPT
The Completed Arc - the corridors become brightened in colour, which in turn, stimulates the childs creativity, and productivity
Street Furniture
In a city that is under constant development, the need for more contemporary design is always in
request. Through this project I have developed a more, modern, aestheticly
pleasing Bus stop. Evolved from the classic Design.
They say the city never sleeps...
INITIAL CONCEPTS // BUS STOP // SKETCHING
Research to consider :
- The base of the bus stop must be elevated from the ground to allow for waste and leaves to blow through the bus stop, rather than creating a build up where people sit / stand
- The bus stop will obviously need shel-ter to ensure that the people using the bus stop are safe from all weather for all seasons while waiting
- There will be at least a three person seat to allow space for the elderly waiting for their bus.
The Key Objective was to create a new and innovative design for a every day use Bus Stop
FINAL CONCEPT // BUS STOP // SKETCHING

The sides of the Bust Stop will allow ample room for advertisments and community boards depending where the bus stop is situated.
The several gaps at the base of the bus stop will allow any leaves or litter to vacate the bus stop and blow through to ensure that there is not a build up on any side.
The roof of the bus stop is sloped facing the front to ensure it is weatherproof and is more than capable of protecting the people using it
The bus stop has only one enterance / exit to ensure an orderly queue is formed when entering / exiting the bus. The four walls also provide room for people to wait / lean. There is also ample room for seats to be placed to form a waiting area for elderly passengers.

The Lego Man
The Lego man was created in a 3:1 scale. Designed from three different
materials, he was a precise and exact replica of the standard Lego figure...
Only larger...
Scale 3:1The lego man was created from MDF, Jelutong, and pink Modelling Foam
Fig 1 shows the precise, exact measurements taken with a 3x scale increase.

Plastics Innovation
The Plastics Innovation Challenge allowed me to conceptualize a
commonly used metal object that could be replaced by a plastic. This would
identify a possible field in which a greener world could emerge.
Could the average Reinforcement Bar used in Construction be replaced?
The Problem...
- China is currently buying masses of stock in steel, the replacement of these steel rods would not only relieve world resources, but save
incalculable amounts of money due to the quantity needed.
The Dachaoshan dam in Yunnan provinceWall Height 111m
Manwan Dam, Mekong, Yunnanwall height 132m
- Creating the foundation structure of the reinforcement bar can take many hours of hard labour, an easy and simple alternative would be ideal.
- Obviously with the application of plastics rather than metal, the weight of this structure would rapidly decrease and would therefore be a lot easier to create.
A Plastic Re-bar could not completely replace metal within these structures as metal used in pre stressed concrete is
vital. However, with larger structures, i.e Dams, plastics could replace the metal
much more.
Pre stressed plastic has smaller application rather than larger, more important
structures.
The Idea...Reinforcement bars are commonly created from rigid Carbon Steel.
They are required to take a variety of shapes and sizes depending on the structure they will support
‘Easy fit’ would remove most of the labour required to put these structures together before the
application of the concrete.
Implementing a snap together function which, with
the use of the right adhesive, would create stong bonds with the materials used.
The hooked mechanism would hold the arms in place together with the main
poles. After the Epoxy has been added, strong bonds would form holding the
design in place.
Specification
The strongest Polymer, which would be the key material to my ‘Easy Fit’ Re-Bars is Polyamide and glass fibre.
- This would make a material very resistant to wear and abrasion
- With the combination of Fibre Glass the material would also have the best Flexural strength with is crucial to the deisgn

A newly developed plastic from Duke Univeristy has been created to actually gain toughness
when stressed. This would make an ideal replacement for the current rigid carbon steel
used in Reinforcement bars.
‘Mechanophore’ has been added to compound plastics and under many tests has been proven to provide excellent durability when under large
amounts of stress and weight.
The Joining component would have to be amplified with a strong adhesive, as a simple lock mechanism would not
support the structure enough
E4 Semi rigid Epoxy is used in high impact resistance cases and is the best that the company
‘Smart Adhesives’ have to offer.
E1 rigid epoxy also creates excellent structural bonds for permenantly fastening rigid surfaces
Future Prospects ...
Genral Arrangement...
The connection cllips are foced onto the main body of the
reinforcement bar. This is coupled with the addition of the Epoxy to
ensure a firm and lasting grip between the materials.
The Application of EasyFit would undoubtably have a large impact on the enviroment and the future of Construction
The ease of use, the reduced cost, and saved resources would have a huge impact on the enviroment, elevating us to a
greener, more sustainable future
With this easy application for the reinforcement bars, many sizes and structures can be accommodated for in less time.
Easy Fit is a suitable solution to all construction needs.
Computer Aided Design
Through use of Solid Works and Rhino I have been able to develop some designs with pin point accuracy.
All watch compnentes were created using Rhino 5.
Rhino Scaled Watch
Through use of this program I was able to create a completed watch. Every measurement was created using exact measurements in order to gain understanding of what the watch
would look like upon completion.
