I t’s true that our industry is undergoing massive upheaval from the Affordable

Care Act and other unrelated regulation that will forever change the way health care is delivered and paid for in our country. There are many uncertainties … will the ACA work as planned? Will 32 million more Americans have health insurance coverage? Will the promise of increased access to preventive care ultimately save the system real money and improve overall health status? Will small, rural hospitals like ours survive? (See letter from Dr. Ruth Hoppe, Board Chairperson.)

But there are also many things of which I am certain.

I know for sure that at CAH, we have staff that genuinely cares for each and every patient coming here for care and we have a bright future.

I know that our physicians and nurses are among the best anywhere … delivering services with hometown attitude and world-class caring.

I know that CAH is an economic force in our region – with a payroll of over $18 million and over $54 million in local economic impact each year.

I know that with our focus on strategic planning and a facility plan to match, we will not only survive, but thrive into the future.

I know that with the support of the people we serve, CAH can continue to be a leader among rural hospitals nationwide.

Thank you for your continued use of and faith in our hospital.

— Lyn JenksPresident and CEO of Charlevoix Area Hospital

They say these days that if you work in the healthcare industry and you’re not nervous… you’re just not paying attention!

Dear Community Member:

On behalf of the Charlevoix Area Hospital Board, I would like to share with you our collective sense of enthusiasm and optimism about the future of our hospital. The last year has seen an incredible amount of creative activity directed at placing the hospital on a firm foundation for the changes coming to all American health care institutions over the next several years. Under the able leadership of CEO Lyn Jenks, we have worked together with hospital leaders, physicians, and staff to develop revised mission and vision statements, producing in turn specific strategies that will guide our work over the next year.

We have launched a board education agenda, striving to hone our skills to meet the rapid and complex changes that are coming. We have approved a long range plan for improvements to our physical plant. We have developed a plan of partnership with Munson Healthcare that maintains our independence, but which seeks to deliver “the right care in the right place” for all who see our physicians, at the outpatient venues we operate, and at the hospital itself.

Foremost, we understand that success in today’s changing health care world demands creating value for patients: the best possible care at the lowest possible cost. This means renewed focus on quality and efficiency, and we are calling on everyone to innovate toward this goal. All this, while maintaining the warm and compassionate care for which we are best known.

There is much more to come, but we are off to a fine start.

Sincerely,

Ruth B. Hoppe, MD Chair, Charlevoix Area Hospital Board

Foremost, we understand that success in today’s changing health care world demands creating value for patients: the best possible care at the lowest possible cost. This means renewed focus on quality and efficiency, and we are calling on everyone to innovate toward this goal.

From the BeginningE ach year, Charlevoix Area Hospital helps bring 200 newborns

into the world. For the Jacobs family, the birth of their son

Salem was both an exciting and terrifying experience. Throughout

Jacqueline’s pregnancy, everything was normal and proceeded

as usual. With a planned Cesarean delivery, Jacqueline and

Marc were expecting to have a healthy baby boy. Once Salem

was born, however, it was discovered that the baby needed

additional specialized care. Pediatrician Dr. Rod Tinney decided it

was necessary to relocate baby Salem to Munson Medical Center’s

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Salem was transferred to Munson Medical Center (MMC) by

ambulance. Marc made the tough decision to follow his son to

MMC while leaving Jacqueline behind at Charlevoix Area Hospital to

recuperate from her delivery. According to Marc, “It was extremely

difficult to leave Jacqueline. I wanted to be in two places at once. It

was by far one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.”

While Jacqueline recovered at CAH, she received many updates

from her husband. The nurses at Charlevoix Area Hospital also

tried to ease Jacqueline’s fear by explaining the changes that were

occurring with baby Salem. Jacqueline said, “The nurses were very supportive and understanding. It was an extremely

difficult time not being able to be at

Munson with Marc and Salem. Whenever there was an update, the nurses took the time to explain what was happening.” Once released from

the hospital, Jacqueline hurried to

Munson’s NICU where she was reunited

with her family.

Salem would spend a total of ten days in the NICU at MMC.

Through the collaboration, teamwork, and partnership between

Charlevoix Area Hospital and Munson Medical Center, the transition

from one hospital to another happened seamlessly, making a

stressful situation a little less so for the Jacobs family.

Six months later, Salem is a healthy baby boy. Jacqueline happily

shared, “I’m thankful that my son is healthy. You would never guess

he was so sick, looking at him now. The partnership between

Charlevoix and Munson made this experience less terrifying. They

worked together to help my son and I get better.”

Wellness Wednesday

C ommunity health and wellness are important parts of the Hospital’s mission. To do their part, the Hospital’s Director of Community Health Education, Kathy Jacobsen, created the Wellness

Wednesday program. Community members are able to have preventive screenings to gain a better understanding of their overall health. Registered nurses help individuals understand their wellness results while offering helpful suggestions for maintenance or improvement. Various tests offered during an individual’s visit include a total cholesterol check, glucose levels, body mass index (BMI) score, blood pressure, and pulse.

For one local couple, Wellness Wednesday was an eye-opening experience. Having heard about the program through the local health department, Jay and Patty Nowell scheduled a visit in January. In light of the holiday season, the couple knew they had not been eating well; however, they were both taken aback by their wellness numbers. Patty remembers, “I was extremely surprised by the numbers. It was very shocking to see the overview of our health. After seeing our numbers, I knew Jay and I would have to make several significant lifestyle changes.”

Since attending their first Wellness Wednesday in January, the Nowells have attended this program on three different occasions. As a result of simple lifestyle changes — small modifications to their daily meals, incorporating moderate exercise — both Jay and Patty succeeded in turning their health around by significantly reducing their cholesterol, BMI and blood pressure. For Patty, “The support we received from the nurses at Charlevoix Area Hospital was tremendous. It was wonderful to have feedback and have the pat on the back with our continued efforts. It has been a challenge and a game.”

The lifestyle changes that we have made are pretty significant. We have seen a huge improvement in our health and numbers as a result of Wellness Wednesday.

Walk with a Doc O ne of the remarkable qualities about living “Up North” is the close-knit feel of the

community. Where else would you get the chance to take a leisurely stroll with one of the doctors from your local hospital? Charlevoix Area Hospital physicians and other staff have started “Walk with a Doc” — giving residents the opportunity to meet people like the Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Craig Boss, and its newest general surgeon, Dr. Sarah Foster. The

event started this past September, when doctors from the Hospital and staff from Cardiac Rehab invited community members to walk a mile together around

downtown Charlevoix.

Cardiac Rehab’s motto, “Healthy Hearts Start Here,” promotes healthy lifestyle choices through exercise and eating correctly. Tina Foltz, Program Coordinator for Cardiac Rehabilitation and Wellness

notes, “We are taking our motto to the streets, making exercise fun and informative. Walk with a Doc is a great way for the community to meet different doctors and staff. People have the opportunity to ask questions about their health and have a casual conversation in a relaxed atmosphere.”

Community member Jane Zipp commented, “Having attended both Walk with a Doc events, I

enjoyed both tremendously. Both Dr. Boss and Dr. Foster were extremely

nice and welcoming. I appreciate all of the time they took to discuss my health related questions.”

Beginning in the summer of 2014, Charlevoix Area Hospital will host Walk with a Doc each month—come join us!

Kathy Jacobsen, Directory of Community Health Education, is “delighted that the School Nurse Program is a finalist in Jackson Healthcare’s Hospital Charitable Services Award Program. It is a great honor and privilege to have been selected.” Further Ms. Jacobsen is “extremely proud of our School Nurse Program and the accomplishments of our school nurses.

School Nurse Program is a Finalist for a National Award

T he School Nurse Program, sponsored by the Hospital, is a finalist in Jackson Healthcare’s

Hospital Charitable Services Award Program. This competition will evaluate the School Nurse Program on its innovative ideas and the measured successes of the program.

To participate in this competition, the School Nurse Program must demonstrate a clear vision of its future impact on the community; meet a well-defined, measurable community need; have a track record of measured accomplishments, and demonstrate the uniqueness of the program in comparison to other programs.

On February 4, 2014, the winner will be announced at the Hospital Charitable Services Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Through the dedicated work of the school nurses, students not only receive day to day care, but also have the opportunity to learn about healthy lifestyle habits that will last a lifetime.

The CAH School Nurse Program places registered nurses in nine local schools. Through the dedicated work of the school nurses, students have the opportunity to learn about healthy lifestyle habits that will last a lifetime.

Becoming a Doctor

A t a time when the need for primary care physicians has never been greater, it has

also become increasingly difficult to recruit these physicians. In an effort to attract and retain new medical students to rural health care, Michigan State University encourages their medical students to consider studying rural medicine. Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine recently expanded its Rural Community Health Program to include three new rural health care sites, including Charlevoix Area Hospital. This program is designed to help future physicians understand how care is delivered across a rural population as well as special challenges encountered by rural health systems.

Once selected for this program, MSU’s medical students will spend up to twenty-four months in the greater Charlevoix area. Students will learn clinical skills and also gain experience with the varied roles of a rural physician, from treating medical needs to providing leadership in public health and community health improvement.

The students rotate through the Health Department, the physicians’ offices, the emergency room, and numerous other departments throughout the Hospital. The Charlevoix Area Hospital Foundation, along with the Hospital, recently renovated a house for the medical students to use while they study in Charlevoix.

Dan Hanba, a medical student currently interning at Charlevoix Area Hospital chose the Rural Community Health Program because “there’s not a lot of chances for medical students to experience the medical field in a rural community. I’ve been allowed more hands-on experiences in comparison to many other medical students. The Rural Community Health Program has provided me with a unique medical education I may not have otherwise had.”

Dr. Andrea Wendling, MD, FAAFP, a Family Care Physician at Boyne Area Medical Center,

(a Charlevoix Area Hospital Affiliate), has accepted the position of Director of Rural Health Curriculum at Michigan State, a role she will fill while continuing to care for her patients at Boyne Area Medical Center. As part of her new position, Dr. Wendling has been working with MSU to develop the Rural Community Health Program.

“Ultimately,” Dr. Wendling said, “the goal is to highlight what our rural health care system already does well, and to teach the students how it can be done even more effectively. We have wonderful health care management providers and practices in place up here, we just need to focus on maintaining and improving these practices as well as attracting future rurally-minded health care providers so that all communities can benefit, and this program is a great place to start.”

One of the greatest benefits to the community and another major goal of the program is to eventually increase the number of rural physicians in Michigan and to improve the retention of physicians working in rural communities. Developing relationships with the staff of CAH as well as the patients of northern Michigan will foster a personal connection that hopefully encourages students to return north for their medical careers.

Chemotherapy and Infusion Center

T he Charlevoix Area Hospital Board of Directors has given approval for the building of a Chemotherapy Infusion Center. The Infusion

Center, opening late spring of 2014, will be a six-chair facility overlooking the tranquil, healing waters of Lake Michigan. This new service will provide treatment for patients requiring chemotherapy, blood products, antibiotics, hydration therapy and other support infusions.

Patients will no longer need to travel long distances to receive their infusions; rather patients can receive their infusion care closer to home. Each patient will enjoy the breathtaking views of Lake Michigan in a calming, private atmosphere. Dr. Craig Boss, Chief Medical Officer of Charlevoix Area

Hospital, believes, “We have the opportunity to provide personalized, quality care to the community in a unique atmosphere and, most importantly, close to home.”

This new state-of-the-art infusion center will offer patients the care they need with the compassion they deserve. Along with receiving necessary infusions, patients have the support of the Circle of Strength program. This support group offers emotional and financial support for individuals who are fighting for this cure. The Circle of Strength and the staff of Charlevoix Area Hospital offer assistance, care, and encouragement for each individual dealing with this serious illness.

Dear Friends,

For over ten years, the Charlevoix Area Hospital Foundation has worked to support the Hospital in meeting the health care needs of our local communities. In return, our big-hearted communities have contributed countless volunteer hours and donor dollars to support the Hospital’s mission.

Over the past year, our generous donors made it possible to: › Provide on-site medical resident housing for students involved in MSU’s Rural

Community Health Program

› Install equipment for minimally invasive spinal surgery

› Invest in enhancements and new equipment for the Imaging Technology Department

› Continue to promote Community Health & Wellness Programs such as Fit4Life, Wellness Wednesday, and the School Nurse Program (now in nine area school systems)

We are extremely proud of the Hospital and the Foundation’s efforts over the past year — work that could not have been accomplished without your continued giving. Looking to the future, the Foundation is taking the necessary steps to remain a strong supporter of the Hospital and the community — including strategic planning sessions, increased board engagement and a new Executive Director, Chelsea Townsend.

We are excited to see what the next year will bring! Thank you once again for your tremendous support and dedication.
