1 Dear Alumni, Greetings! I am honored to write to you as the principal of Charleston Catholic High School and proud to be an example of the profound impact and blessing that Charleston Catholic can have on a student’s life. In the last several months, I have had the pleasure of visiting with alumni from the classes of 1954, 1964, 1974, and 1994 as they gathered for class reunions. Several members of the classes toured the school building to reminisce and to get a feel for the present day happenings at Charleston Catholic. How entertaining it is to hear tales of chemistry class experiments, locker room hijinks, and class plays on the stage in the gym! What is most heartwarming, though, is to see the relationships and connections that still exist among these former classmates years and years after they graduated. Many are not in contact with each other regularly, but the ease with which they fall into the familiar rhythm of these relationships from their younger years is notable as they interject over one another to add details about what the nuns caught them doing. As we wander around the school building, I share tidbits of our current student body- 100% college acceptance, high rates of National Merit Semi-Finalists, the levels of extracurricular involvement and athletic successes, and the students’ commitment to community service. While outstanding, these statistics are not what sets Charleston Catholic apart. Our school is special because of the community that exists; a community created from the love of so many enduring relationships built in the halls of CCHS. Our young graduates eagerly return each fall to share stories of their successes and adventures with classmates and teachers; many show up at athletic events to cheer on former teammates. And our older graduates, 20, 40, 50, or 60 years after graduation, still want to gather together to catch up, reminisce, and renew friendships. No matter how far you wander or how many years you have been gone, you will always have a home at Charleston Catholic. May this newsletter find you in good health and happiness. SERVING OUR NEIGHBORS

Service to others is paramount to the Charleston Catholic community. Our students, staff, and families work togeth-er to provide for our neighbors in need in so many ways. 100% of our students are involved in community service.

Last June, led by Theology teacher Bill Mehle, students, alumni, parents, and friends of CCHS continued the tradi-tion of making homes in Clay County safer, warmer, and drier through the HOPE ministry. Preparations are under-way for this year’s Clay County Christmas Project. The CCHS community hopes to make this joyous season bright-er for 400 children, providing presents and stuffed stockings, and assisting the community with 250 family food box-es.

Special donations for the American Heart Association, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Youth Soccer Initiative, and Catholic Charities have been made in the last year. In addition, our students participate in benefit walks, serve at Manna Meal and Trinity’s Table, serve as camp counselors, and assist in church activities, among other notable acts. Students typically contribute over 11,500 hours annually outside the school day in service to the community.

IMPRESSIVE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

2014 was a fabulous year academically for Charleston Catholic students! May’s graduating class produced 45 graduates accepted by 65 colleges and universities. 11% of the graduates were National Merit Finalists, 65% quali-fied for the Promise Scholarship, and 81% of these graduates were offered $4.2 million in merit scholarships.

With 100% of seniors testing, mean SAT scores for the class were 578 for Critical Reading, 591 for Math, and 575 in Writing. The composite ACT score for the CCHS Class of 2014, with 89% of the senior class testing, was 26.4.

Advanced Placement scores for the Spring of 2014 were very impressive! A remarkable 63% of our high school students (grades 9-12) took at least one AP exam, with a total of 219 exams taken by CCHS students. Additionally, over 64% of the Class of 2014 took and passed an AP exam during their career. 100% of CCHS students scored 3, 4, or 5 on the Calculus BC test. 88% scored accordingly on the Physics Mechanics test, while 86% did so in Eng-lish Language. 72% earned those scores for English Literature while 88% did so in Art History. 42% of the Class of 2014 earned AP Scholar Awards which recognizes their performance of a 3 or higher on AP exams.

ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE

Charleston Catholic’s athletic program continues to be successful! 2013-14 marked the 6th consecutive year that the high school teams from CCHS won the Gazette Excellence in Sports Award (GEISA), setting a new record for “A” schools, winning the award for the 10th time in 18 years. Our teams’ successes reflect the hard work and dedi-cation of our students and coaches. CCHS students bring the same work ethic and standards of excellence to the sports arena that they display in the classroom. In addition to this recognition, the Irish claimed the state golf title and made state tournament appearances in volleyball, boys’ and girls’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ swimming, boys’ and girls’ track, boys’ and girls’ tennis, and cross country. Our Irish teams scored GEISA points in 12 of the 17 sports we play. It is a beautiful achievement. Our teams are off to a great start for the 2014-15 school year! In October, the CCHS golf team earned its fourth consecutive state title, a record for all classes in the state. The girls’ cross country team participated in the state meet, finishing seventh. Boys’ and girls’ soccer teams also earned state championships in early November. What a tremendous start!

Alumni Serve as Commencement Speakers

CCHS welcomed Ian Chillag (Class of 1996) as the 2013 commencement speaker. Ian is a producer on NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me. Previously Ian worked on NPR’s Fresh Air and The Bryant Park Project. He urged members of the Class of 2013 about the importance of saying “yes” to opportunities

as they presented themselves.

Major General James A. Hoyer (Class of 1979), Adjutant General of the West Virginia National Guard, served as the commencement speaker for the Class of 2014. General Hoyer graduated from the University of Charleston in 1983 and began his military career as a cavalry officer with the West Virginia National Guard. He served with the army Special Forces and led the development the Joint Interagency Training and Education Center and its Center for National Response, a national operation for infrastructure protec-tion and consequence response. General Hoyer urged the graduates to better the world.

Many Thanks

For 28 years, each morning, students at Charleston Catholic were greeted at the front door by the warm, welcoming, and kind smile of their principal, Debra Sulli-van. In June, Mrs. Sullivan retired from Charleston Catholic and is now beginning to write the next chapter in her life. Mrs. Sullivan, with Monsignor Sadie, built the Charleston Catholic tradition of excellence that exists today. They established high expectations for faculty and stu-dents which led to the remarkable programs that exist today– academic, athletic, faith formation, community service, and extracurricular. Mrs. Sullivan oversaw the expansion of the school’s physical facility. In 1994, a magnificent 3 story addition to the school building was completed including classrooms, laboratories, a computer lab, and a spacious gathering space/ lunch-room with a full kitchen. She led the renovation of the basement cafeteria into three large classrooms and a computer lab. In 2004, the Charleston Catholic Athletic Complex opened, an outstanding basketball, volleyball, and tennis facility complete with a competition basketball floor, two practice courts, and six tennis courts. Mrs. Sullivan’s most enduring legacy, however, is the kindness with which she treated the members of the Charleston Catholic community. She served as teacher, listener, cheerleader, counselor, and friend to many. We sincerely thank her for pouring her heart into the school, faculty, students and families of Charleston Catholic for those twenty-eight years, and we wish her well! Upon her departure, the Sullivan Scholarship was established in Mrs. Sulli-van’s honor, to be awarded each year to a deserving student. To contribute to the scholarship fund, please send a check payable to Charleston Catholic with Sullivan scholarship on the memo line or visit the school website at www. charlestoncatholic-crw.org.

school on Saturday, and enjoying dinner at Paterno’s at the Park on Saturday. So much fun was had, they are already looking forward to a 25th reunion in 2019!

SHAMROCK GOLF TOURNAMENT

The annual CCHS alumni golf tournament was held May 18, 2014, and was a huge success! Funds raised during the event helped support academic and extra-curricular activities for the current students. Thanks to Bo Dolan (Class of 1996) and Larry Pack (Class of 2000) for organizing the event, and to all of the alumni who participated. Preliminary planning for the 2015 event is underway. Watch for more information coming soon.

The year was 1951, and Junior Haid led the Charleston Catholic Fighting Irish to many victories as the football

team’s quarterback, a pitcher on the baseball diamond, and a guard in basketball. His athletic prowess earned

him a scholarship to Morris Harvey College. After college, he married his high school sweetheart, June

Burkhart, an attendant to Miss Fighting Irish in 1951. In 2013, Junior and June Haid celebrated 60 years of mar-

riage, 5 children, 9 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.
