• At age five, Charles moved to Chatham.

• At age ten, his family moved to Camden, London.

• He worked in a blacking factory while his father went to prison for debt.

• While he worked, he thought ideas for many of his novels.

• Charles did not like working and wished to stop working.

• Then he finished the school and he became a journalist.

• He loved the style of the 18th century picturesque or Gothic romance novels.

• He is famed for his depiction of the working class, his intricate plots and his sense of humour.

• Dickens wrote numerous novels.

Oliver Twist• It is one of the most popular English novels.

• It is the first book whose protagonist is a child, Oliver Twist.

• Oliver is an orphan boy, he is 12 years old. He goes to London and he goes with a band of thieves, they force Oliver to steal. Mr Brownlow catches Oliver stealing and rescues him from the band. Then the leader of the band is hanged and Mr Brownlow adopts Oliver.
