Choosing a Wine

When it comes to matching food and wine the possibilities are endless. To have a great meal, the wine and the food should complement one another. A basic rule of thumb is “light food with light wine, heavier food with heavier wine.” Soups, salads and light dishes will taste best when accompanied by light (usually white) wine. More robust foods with fuller flavors can handle bigger, stronger wines.

FishMany wines can overpower the delicate range of flavors to be found in fish. Try something light and fresh that will let the flavor of the fish shine through. Sauvignon Blancs are particularly good since they are light, zesty and lemony. Richer fish dishes call for bolder wines like chardonnays.

MeatMeat’s more robust flavors call for hearty wines. Red Wine is a classic partner for red meat. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah/Shiraz, are excellent choices. Red and white wine can work equally well with pork. Aim for a lighter red like Pinot Noir, or softer reds like Merlot or Malbec. A wide variety of wines work with poultry, particularly Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, and Pinot Noir.

PastaWith cream and fish sauces, lean towards white wines like Pinot Grigio and crisp Chardonnays. With red sauces, meat sauces, and lasagna go with a hearty red. Any Italian will do as will Zinfandel or Syrah/Shiraz.

Ask your Kingfish server for recommendations choosing a great wine to go with your meal.
