LOCATION: RUSSIA

Location:

It is on two continents – Europe and Asia.

Russia is almost landlocked (surrounded by other countries with no access to major waterways, such as oceans and seas).

The permafrost, or permanently frozen land blocks access to the Arctic Ocean.

Russia shares borders with 15 other countries.

St. Petersburg is one of a few cities in Russia with access to major waterways for trade with other countries.

How would Russia’s location impact its ability to trade with other countries?

Trade with Russia is difficult, but possible, especially with the 15 countries Russia shares of border with.

There is little access to major waterways.

Permanently frozen land is difficult to travel over.

CLIMATE: RUSSIA

Climate:

Russia only has two main seasons: winter and summer.

July is the hottest month and January is the coldest month.

Much of the land is permafrost, or permanently frozen.

Most of Russia is extremely close.

There is a much warmer climate around the Black Sea and Baltic Sea.

How would Russia’s climate affect where people live in Russia?

Very few people live on the Asian portion of Russia because it is too cold.

Most people live on the European portion of Russia because of the better climate.

NATURAL RESOURCES: RUSSIA

Natural Resources:

Russia is rich in many natural resources.

Those resources include: timber (wood), gold, aluminum ore, coal, and iron.

Russia is a leading producer of gold.

How would Russia’s natural affect where people live?

These natural resources must be extracted (removed) from the each. Extracting these resources provides jobs for citizens of Russia.

The natural resources found in Russia also supply product manufacturers with materials to make products.

How would Russia’s natural resources impact its ability to trade with other countries?

Being rich in natural resources allows Russia to trade their natural resources with others are well as supply major manufacturing industries with materials to make products

Most people live on the European portion of

Russia.

Why do people in Russia live where they live?

Most people live on the European side of Russia

because of the better climate, access to natural

resources, and location for trading with other

countries.

LOCATION: UNITED KINGDOM Location:

The United Kingdom is located off of mainland Europe.

The United Kingdom is made up of 4 countries: England, Wales, Ireland, and Scotland.

These 4 countries make 2 huge islands with access to water all around them.

It has many ports for goods to be shipped in and out of the country by boats.

The English Channel separates the UK from France.

Easy access to the Atlantic Ocean.

How would the United Kingdom’s location impact its ability to trade with other countries?

Being an island surrounded by water is great.

Ships can get in and out to pick-up and deliver goods all around the world.

There are also major airports, such as Heathrow Airport, in London to welcome travelers and ship goods in and out of the country.

CLIMATE: UNITED KINGDOM

Climate:

The United Kingdom has a mild climate.

A good amount of rainfall throughout the year.

Warm water and wind from the Gulf of Mexico affects the climate of the UK.

The movement of warm water and wind from the Gulf of Mexico, across the Atlantic Ocean, protects the UK from harsh, cold winters.

The climate is good for farming and raising livestock (farm animals).

How would the United Kingdom’s climate affect where people live in the United Kingdom?

Because the climate in the UK is mild, it allows people to live comfortably throughout the UK.

NATURAL RESOURCES: UNITED

KINGDOM

Natural Resources:

The United Kingdom is rich in many natural resources.

Those resources include: natural gas, petroleum, iron ore, gold, limestone, lead, tin, gypsum, and potash.

Fishing and farming are also natural resources in the UK.

How would the United Kingdom’s natural resources affect where people live?

These natural resources must be extracted (removed) from the each. Extracting these resources provides jobs for citizens of the UK.

The natural resources found in the UK also supply product manufacturers with materials to make products.

Automobile and steel manufacturing are big industries in the UK.

How would the United Kingdom’s natural resources impact its ability to trade with other countries?

People live spread throughout the UK, however,

most people live in large urban (city) areas, such

as London.

Why do people in the United Kingdom live

where they live?

Most people choose to live in large urban centers

(cities) because of the availability of jobs to earn

money.

LOCATION: GERMANY Location:

Germany is located in north-central Europe.

The European Plains runs across Germany.

Germany is surrounded by several European countries, including Poland, France, Austria, and Switzerland.

The Baltic Sea and North Sea are to the north of Germany.

It is very densely populated, especially in urban (city) areas.

The Rhine and Danube Rivers run through Germany.

The Alps run along Germany’s southern border.

How would the Germany’s location impact its ability to trade with other countries?

Because Germany is located in the center of Germany, it has a good location for travel and trade with other countries.

Germany has used the flat lands of the European Plain to create great roads and highways to make transportation of goods easier.

CLIMATE: GERMANY

Climate:

Germany has a mild climate.

Germany’s climate is affected by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream.

Coastal areas have mild winters, and warm, dry summers.

Mountain areas have cold, wet, and snowy winters and humid subtropical summers.

How would the Germany’s climate affect where people live in the Germany?

The long, cold winters in some parts of Germany make trading difficult.

Natural Resources:

How would the Germany’s natural resources affect where people live?

LOCATION: ITALY Location:

Italy is a peninsula (a landform surrounded by

water on three sides).

It is shaped like a boot.

The Alps Mountains form the northern border.

It is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.

Italy has many ports.

How would the Italy’s location impact its ability

to trade with other countries?

Being surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea makes

it easy to trade because ships can easily access ports

to ship goods and in and out of the country.

CLIMATE: ITALY

Climate:

Italy has a mild climate

Coastal areas have mild winters, and warm, dry summers.

In the mountain areas, the climate is colder, wet and snowy in the winters. The summers are humid and subtropical.

How would the Italy’s climate affect where people live in the Italy?

Most people live in the coastal, flatter areas of the country.

Natural Resources:

Italy has many natural resources including coal, zinc, potash, oil reserves, farming land, fishing, and natural gas.

How would the Italy’s natural resources affect where people live?

The natural resources found in the Italy also supply product manufacturers with materials to make products.
