“To be a successful leader, you have to have integrity. Your word has to be everything you’ve got.

You must have a moral compass, because as a leader, you are

exposed more to the people.”

“The King…shall not multiply horses for himself…nor shall he greatly multiply silver and gold for himself. Also it shall be, when he sits on the throne that he shall write for himself a copy of this law in a book…and it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the

days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law…that his heart may

not be lifted above his brethren, that he may not turn aside from the commandment

to the right hand or to the left.”

(Deuteronomy 17:14-20)

Page 8: CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP

• Moses knew the threat that power can have on a leader’s honesty and integrity:

• he warned about the danger of greed (by having too many possessions)

• he warned about the danger of pride

Page 9: CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP

Bible lessons on Honesty and Integrity:

• people will not follow dishonest leaders• the followers will not be honest if the leader does

not display honesty• the more responsibility a leader has, the more

visible is his integrity, or lack of integrity• in times of crisis, a leader’s integrity becomes

most evident• integrity has to be shown in actions, not in words• an organisation which has a code of integrity, will

always create honest leaders.• A leader should always lead with humility,

knowing that God is watching him.

TEAM DEVELOPMENT

“As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his

friend” (Proverbs 27:17)

A team = A group of individuals who may

have different needs and experience, but they are working towards a common, unifying goal

Page 11: CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP

1. The importance of teams

“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labour…and a threefold cord is not quickly broken”

(Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)

Page 12: CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP

“Therefore…I set the people according to their families…and half of my servants

worked at construction, while the other half held

the spears…and the leaders were behind

all the house of Judah.”

(Nehemiah 4:13)

“For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do

not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one

another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace

that is given to us, let us use them…”

(Romans 12:3-6)

how you manage them once they are doing the

Give the team clear instructions…

“Appoint elders in every town… an elder must be blameless…

not overbearing, not quick tempered… not pursuing

dishonest gain” (Titus 1:5-7)

Page 21: CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP

3. The power of teams, and empowering teams…

•Noah built the ark, with the help of a team•Nehemiah built the wall around Jerusalem with the help of a team•Joshua knocked down the walls of Jericho with the help of a team•And Jesus turned a small group of people with diverse backgrounds, into an effective team that would convert the world to their mission!

4. The Importance of Unity in a team…

“If you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one

another!” (Galatians 5:15)

“Your shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria; your nobles rest in the dust.

Your people are scattered on the mountains, and no one gathers them.”

(Nahum 3:18)

Page 32: CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP

UNITY is very important in team work

“All who believed were together, and had all things in common… and the

Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved”

(Acts 2:44).

Page 33: CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP

“For as the body is one and has many members… so also is Christ…

that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members

should have the same care for one another. And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honoured, all the

members rejoice with it”(1 Corinthians 12:12-27)

Page 34: CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP

Through unity, the team members can grow and develop in 4 main dimensions:

5. Delegation

Teams run best when the leader

can delegate tasks and authority

Page 36: CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP

“What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit?...The thing that you do is not good. Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves

out. For this thing is too much for you; you are not able to perform it by yourself…You shall

teach them the statutes and the law…moreover you shall select from all the people able men…

and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties,

and rulers of tens. And let them judge the people at all times. Then it will be that every

great matter they shall bring to you, and every small matter they themselves shall judge. So it

will be easier for you, for they will bear the burden with you. If you do this thing, and God

so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people will go to their place

in peace” (Exodus 18:14-23).

Page 37: CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP

In order to delegate…• You have to trust your team members

• Your team must understand their role and be able to perform

• Your team must be given specific instructions

• Your team must be encouraged

• A leader delegates according to the member’s readiness & experience

Page 38: CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP

For Titus…• “But as for you, speak the things which are

proper for sound doctrine: that the older men be sober…the older women…reverent in behaviour…admonish the young women to love their husbands…likewise exhort the young men…” (Titus 2:2-6).

For Timothy…• “Let no one despise your youth, but be an

example to the believers…do not neglect the gift that is in you…take heed to yourself and to the doctrine.” (1 Timothy 4:12-16).

Page 39: CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP

6. Effective Communication

“Tychicus, who is a beloved brother, a faithful minister… will tell you all the news about me. I am sending him to you for this very purpose,

that he may know your circumstances and comfort your

hearts”(Colossians 4:7-8)

Page 40: CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP

Lessons from the Bible on Communication

• To motivate others to reach your goal, you must constantly communicate your message

• Use a variety of communication methods: but the most effective is face-to-face

• Effective leaders communicate through meetings with individuals, small groups, large gatherings, and they customise their approach according to the audience they are meeting with.

• Leaders must share information, so that the followers do not hear incorrect information

• During meetings, listen carefully to people and show them that you have heard and will take action

Page 41: CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP

3. LEADERS MUST ALSO BE FOLLOWERS..

•Follow the process of spiritual growth…•Read and study your followers…•Help them develop to their full potential•Serve yourself by serving others

Page 42: CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP

Authority comes from the commitment to help others become

wiser, and more capable; it does not come from a title or position. Leadership

is born out of this helping relationship.

Page 43: CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP

A wise leader is like a coach who trains his followers to grow and become

better people

A coach is a ‘vehicle that transports people’. And so as a coach, you must

transport people to higher and higher levels of personal, spiritual, and social growth.
