Status of Industries in Jalgaon District
5.1 Introduction:
In previous chapter we have studied the general agricultural land
use, production and productivity of industrial crops, Concepts of general
land use Classification of land use , Tahsilwise general land use, Tahsilwise
per capita net sown area, Land use efficiency , Changing industrial cropping
pattern, Tahsilwise trends of production in various crops. In this chapter we
will study the status of industries in Jalgaon district, general distribution of
industries, types of industries and their spatial distribution, location pattern
of industries. Large, medium and cottage industries in the study region
performance of major industries in Jalgaon district.
The industries of Jalgaon district are divided into four groups on the
basis of economy size and location and their spatial distribution is studied by
taking Jalgaon district. In the fourth part location pattern of the
manufacturing Industries (Factory and S.S.I.) of the study region are
analyzed by grouping them into major groups and taking taluka as a unit.
Then through a few S.S.I. units are registered under factories Act location
pattern of factory industries and S.S.I units are analyzed separately by
taking major group of industries mainly because of two reasons. First SSI
units are very large in number as compared to factory industries and second
their location pattern is slightly different from that of factory industries.
The distribution and location of manufacturing industries are certainly
governed to a significant degree by environmental factors including physical
as well as human factors of cultural environment.1 Natural environmental
factors are usually of greater importance in the choice of an industrial site
while the cultural environment is of greater importance in the distribution
of manufacturing industries as human factors plays a very dominant in the
distribution of industries in any region. It is also important to note here that
162
once industries are established in a particular locality they tend to be come
stable.2 and create external economics which attract more industries to the
same locality. This means that the choice of site for a industry is an
important decision. Of course industry attracts industry. This is well known
and frequently attested formula Jalgaon is the best example of such formula.
5.2 General distribution in Industries in Jalgaon district:
In 2010 Jalgaon districted 4129 industries and 166119
Industrial workers out of total industries, manufacturing industries are 857
and investment of that industries is Rs.16491 Lack in the Period 2010-11
and maximum workers are engaged in manufacturing industries. Thus the
entire industrial landscape of the region is mainly dominated by the
manufacturing industries. General distribution of the present manufacturing
industries of the region is not uniform. It gives a very complex
controversial picture. Because most of the manufacturing industries of
Jalgaon are concentrated in the Jalgaon, Bhusawal and Chalisgaon . This
uneven distribution of manufacturing industries of the Jalgaon is due to the
geo economic factors which vary from tahsil to tahsil. In geo- economics
factors geographical factors have greater importance. Further these factor
will be discussed in detail while emphasizing the spatial distribution and
location of manufacturing industries.
Talukawise distribution of manufacturing industries and persons
employed in Manufacturing industries during 2010-11 are shown in Table
no. 5.1. That the spatial distribution of Manufacturing industries and
manufacturing employment in the region is highly uneven. This spatial
variation in distribution of industries is due to several factors in which a
mention may be made of uneven distribution or required raw materials
government policy, influence of Jalgaon city. Infrastructural facilities and
enterprises that are concentrated in main towns of the Jalgaon district Year
wise trend of units registered from 1985-86 to 2010-11. In table no. 5.1 the
year 1985-86 there are only 47 units was registration and only 342

5.3 Types of Industries and their spatial distribution:
There are different types of industries. In General there are four
clearly distinguishable types of Industries, based on their economy, size and
location they are as fallow.
1) Large scale Industry.
2) Medium scale Industry
3) Cottage and village scale industry (SSI)
4) Handicraft Industry (SSI)
1. Large scale Industry: Those industry which have investment of above
Rs. 5000000 they called large scale industry.
2. Medium scale industries: Those Industries which have investment. of
Rs. 1000000/- to 500000/- They called medium scale industries
3. Small scale Industries: Those Industries which have investment of up
to Rs. 1000000 they called Small Scale Industries
4. Handicrafts Industries: Is local industry. In Jalgaon district there is
636 units of large scale Industries. There are 456 medium scale
industrial and 516 small scale industries in Jalgaon district during the
period of investigation table no. 5.2 shows Tahsilwise distribution of all
industries.
1. Tahsilwise distribution of large scale industries in Jalgaon
district:
Table no. 5.2 revealed that Tahsilwise distribution large scale
industries in Jalgaon district during the period 2010-11 Jalgaon Tahsil had
the largest number of units (440)& and the 69.3% of shares in the district
goes to Jalgaon Tahsil . It means that Jalgaon Tahsil is very important for
large scale industry in the region. Then Dharangaon Tahsil 34 units and
5.3% is the total district share in large scale industry. Lowest large scale
industries share had recorded in the Muktainagar (04) and percentage (0.6)
% Amalner and Bhadgaon tahsils there are 06 units in both tahsils and 0.9
167
% share in both tahsils. Pachora Tahsil also importance in large scale
industry there are as large scale industries are registered and 4.4% share in
the district Chalisgaon Tahsil 20 units also Registered and total large 3.1 %
Pachora tahsils had a 28 units registered and 4.4 % shares there are mainly
large scale industries are growing smoothly (Map 5.1)
2. Medium Scale Industries:

handicrafts and small scale industry. It can be distinguished by its nature and
location. The district feature is its location in the native places of the
persons and not outside geographical location is Rural3 an industry is
carried on wholly with the help members of family and not hired labour.
This industry does not require modern machinery.
Cottage and village industries are widely scattered in the Jalgaon region.

different from the cottage and village industries. The chief characteristic of
these industries are that the crafts man buys his raw materials manufactures
his articles and himself sells them. within the Jalgaon region the handicrafts
industries vary from tahsils to tahsils5. It is evident from the tahsil of
Jalgaon. Handicraft industries are concentrated in a few tahsils such as
Jalgaon , Pachora, Erondol and Bhusawal, Chalisgaon tahsils. A
Handicrafts industry is wholly based on local resources and man power. It
improves the economic status of regions. Handicrafts industry has the
highest employment potential in relation to capital employment 6. These

5.4 Location Pattern of Industries:
We have seen that at present there are various types of industries in
the Jalgaon region in which each has a different types of distribution and
location pattern. But here for analysis of spatial distribution and location
pattern all two manufacturing industries (Particularly factory industry) as
well as SSI units of Jalgaon region have been classified into nine major
groups based on combining original standard industrial classification
common natural resources consumed by manufacturing industries and final
products of manufacturing industries. These nine major group of
manufacturing industries are agro based, forest based, textile, leather, paper
products and printing and miscellaneous and allied, non metallic, mineral
products, chemical, engineering and miscellaneous of these nine major
groups of industries, Agro based industries has the largest number of units
followed by engineering industries plastic industries . Now we shall discuss
location pattern of industries by taking each major group of industry.
5.5 Agro based Industries:
This major group includes wide range of industries those are
concerned with manufacturing of food product beverages tobacco product
also. Largest number of Agro based industries (160) are in Jalgaon tahsil
followed by Pachora (34) near about 42% Agro based industries are situate
in Jalgaon tahsil. It is highest number and the lowest number of Agro based
industries are recorded in Muktainagar and Yawal tahsil (05) total of 1.3%
in the study region. Pachora tahsils share is 8.9% Dharangaon share is
7.6% and all other tahsils are below 7% share of Agro based industries.

This major group comprises production of inorganic and organic.
Chemicals, fertilizers, Pharmaceuticals, pesticides and dyestuff and several
other products such as perfumes, cosmetics, so of paint etc. However this
group does not comprise of coal and petroleum rubber and plastic
manufacturing industries.
Table no. 5.5 reveals that the total chemical industries are 133 in
Jalgaon district during the period of investigation out of them 76 chemical
industries are situate in the Jalgaon tahsil it means that total Chemicals
industries out of 57.1% share was only Jalgaon tahsil in this industry the
lowest units of chemical.
Are shown in Bodhwad, Chopada and Muktainagar (each one units)
and there is no single chemical industries in Bhadgaon and Parola tahsils
during the period of investigation. Chalisgaon tahsil had a 9 units of
chemical industries its share is 6.9 % of the district total and Bhusawal tahsil
had 7 Chemical units and its share was 5.3% of the district total above table
5.5 shows that the Jalgaon tahsil is important in the Chemical industries due
to some positive reason. This variation in distribution pattern of the
Chemical industries in the region is due to the uneven distribution of various
Chemicals and other required raw material skilled workers, markets
and banking facilities modern technology, hugh capital, skilled workers,
various types of Chemicals and abundant supply of water all these factors
are required for the establishment of Chemicals and Chemical products
industries. Above mentioned basic factors are available in Jalgaon tahsil due
to this largest number (76) of Chemical industries are concentrated in
