Introduction

Empirical data using questionnaires has been collected from four major

stakeholders of B-Schools: students, faculty, and recruitment executives (Executives

working in hiring departments and line managers) in companies and heads of departments

in B-Schools in Karnataka in to ensure a holistic approach to the study.

Quantitative data has been collected from 568 students, 140 faculty and 190

recruiting companies. This chapter presents the demographic profile of all three

respondent groups. Where ever appropriate cross tabulations between two demographic

variables have been analyzed. Chi square test is used for certain relationships between

demographic variables.

Qualitative data has been collected through structured interviews with heads of

departments of B-Schools. Nine heads of departments have been interviewed. This

chapter provides the complete demographic details of all four types of respondents.

4.1 Profile of Students (Respondent Group I)

There are three types of B-Schools in Karnataka: Autonomous, University

Departments and Private Colleges Affiliated to Universities. Here an attempt is made to

analyze the composition of the sample according to the type of B-Schools, age, gender,

course fee, qualifying examination, etc. The sample size consists of 568 students of B-

Schools in Karnataka by using non probability judgment sampling covering all three

types of B-Schools using a structured questionnaire for data collection. The data has been

collected trough personal interview with students of B-Schools in Karnataka.

The table 4.2 depicts the cross tabulation of age of the respondents and type of B-

School. Maximum number of students of Autonomous B-Schools, University

Departments and Private Colleges Affiliated to Universities belonged to the age group of

“21-23 years”, followed by the age group of “24-25 years”. While University

Departments have 7 percent of students in the age group of “26-27 years”, Autonomous

B-Schools have 4.9 percent of students in the age group of ‘above 30 years”

Inference 2

There is a significant difference in the age - group composition across the

different types of B-Schools. Only Autonomous B-Schools have a minor percentage

of students in the age group of ‘above 30 years’.

4.4 Profile of Heads of Departments/ Directors of B-Schools

Nine heads of departments/ directors have been included in the sample. Three

from each type of B-School: Autonomous, University Departments and Private Colleges

Affiliated to Universities.

Conclusion

The demographic profile of B-School students (Respondent group I) varies across

the three types of B-Schools. Autonomous B-School students and students of Private

Colleges Affiliated to Universities pay a higher course fee as compared students of

University Departments. Autonomous B-School students and students of Private Colleges

Affiliated to Universities qualify for the MBA programme through CAT and MAT

examinations, where as University Department students qualify through PGCET

examination. The cut-off percentages for admission in the autonomous B-Schools are

higher than cut-off percentages in Private Colleges Affiliated to Universities and

University Departments. Faculty Profile (Respondent group II) reveals that composition

and qualifications of faculty do not vary significantly across B-Schools. Recruiting

companies profile (Respondent group III) reveals that the highest recruiters of B-School

graduates are the IT and BPO/KPO sectors. Companies which have been operating for

longer duration have recruited lesser number of B-School graduates, in comparison with

younger companies. Most companies have recruited less than 100 B-School graduates in

2006-2007. Medium sized companies have recruited more number of B-School graduates

than large or small sized companies.
