    Appreciation Day

    Chapter 984 Members,

PASSION! This describes how I feel about the Air Force SergeantsAssociation! I have been an avid supporter of this organization forthe past five years, but it did take me a while to really realize IT. Iwas first introduced to AFSA when I was a young Airman stationedin Turkey. I dont even remember how I became a member, but Idid join. I would try to make meetings but some I couldnt. At

times within my first couple of months of being a new member I justdidnt feel like I was a part of the team. I let my membership lapseand never renewed while I finished my tour in Turkey. Years laterand couple of bases after my first experience with AFSA, I decidedto give it another try. Maybe with a change of scenery or just beingpart of a new chapter, maybe things would be different. But afterattending a couple of meetings at my new base it was the sameexperience I experienced before. Yes, I believed that theorganization was doing great things for the Airmen and theirfamilies, as I was one reaping the benefits AFSA was fighting for. I

just wanted to be a part of this great fraternity. It seemed like people

were in these positions for the wrong reasons. So again as asergeant I wasnt a very active member and again I allowed mymembership to lapse. As I was on and off from AFSA since mytime in the Air Force there was a moment where I gained thepassion for this organization, which grows each and every day.

Services. When the House of Representativespassed H.R. 1960, its $638 billion version of the FY2014 National Defense Authorization Act, by a vote of315 to 108, one provision included in the bill wouldrequire all branches of the U.S. military to share thesame camouflage uniformsinstead of the 10 patternsin use todayby October 2018. Variations would stillbe allowed in the shared uniform to adapt to differentenvironments such as desert or jungle. The provisionwas sponsored by Rep. William Enyart, D-Ill. PASSION! Continued from the Presidents Corner:

I realized that instead of letting the problem continue,be the one to help change it. Be a part of the greatwhat this organization is really about, not about the

folks who only think AFSA is for people wanting toget promoted or for the people that have their ownagenda for personal gains. This organization is somuch bigger than any of that; its bigger than any ofus. When I talk to Airmen who arent members, I getall kinds of responses, but I just wish I could pass mypassion to them to see what I see in AFSA. But, noneof this would have ever been possible if I would havegiven up after my first experience with AFSA. I am soglad I didnt and continue to give this organization thechance it really deserved. Again I am humbled and so

passionate about AFSA. Thank you for allowing meto serve as your President for Chapter 984. Chapter984 leads the way!!!

    Oklahoma Clothing Drive

    TEAMWORK!

On 20 May 2013, a tornado tragedy struck close to oneof our brother chapters in Division 3, Chapter 985,Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. A tornado ripped throughthe city close to the installation leaving scraps andhomes damaged nearby. On 31 May 2013, anothertornado struck again causing more damage after thefirst.

Chapter 984 watched the news of this tragedyhappening in Oklahoma and decided to help our

brothers and sisters at Chapter 985. CP Melenkacontacted CP Turner to first check on the safety of allin that area and also what we could do to assist themrecover from the destruction created by these twomassive tornadoes.

Chapter 984, executive council decided to conduct aclothing drive for Chapter 985 and the nearbyOklahoma community that was affected. But beforeChapter 984 could get the clothing drive off the groundthe fundraiser request to solicit clothes had to beapproved through the base. It took several days but

finally Chapter 984 got approval for the clothingdrive. Within minutes of the first email going out tothe membership, MSgt Matthew Fritz from the 55AMXS squadron jumped on board to lead this greatevent. He recruited more than 10 POCs from differentsquadrons on Offutt AFB for support.

Within 6 days the POCs collected over 117 boxes ofsupplies, which estimated to be over 5.3K lbs ofclothing. Once Matt finished the clothing drivecontact was made with 985 CP Terry Turner where he

informed us a lot of places they were assisting havestopped taking donations because of the greatcontributions around the world to assist with thistragedy. MSgt Fritz did not stop there as differentoptions came across the table but he still believed helpwas needed in Oklahoma. He then put a teamtogether to conduct research ofother Oklahoma citiesthat were affected by these tornados.

Within hours of research they found a place inneed. They reached Pastor Delawna Newcomb

in Oklahoma City and found they have ope

and sponsored a disaster relief site at TrueBaptist Missionary Church in OklahoCity. That was the place the team decided

bring the donated clothes too. MSgt Fcontacted U-Haul Truck Company who donatetruck for our event. On 14 Jun he teamed up wSSgt Scott Lowery from Air Force WeatAgency and SSgt Ashley Iverson 55th MOSpack the truck tight and head south to deliver goods. They made it to the location on that morning and helped unload the donated clothe

the church and headed back to Omaha. Melenka had the pleasure to speak to PaNewcomb who said her town was blessed by help of the men and women from OfAFB. She also said within days of the donagoods were received that over 60 families h

been helped from. She believes with the clotdelivered could help another 150-200 neefamilies in the months to come.
