purpose:• Making sure all traces of makeup are removed from the eye and lip

area will allow for a more thorough skin analysis procedure.• Educating guests on how to properly remove their eye makeup and lip

color at home, using Aveda products.

placement:Always remove eye and lip makeup from the guests skin after you have performed the opening ritual and just prior to cleansing the face.

procedure:During your consultation be sure to ask if the guest has particularly sensitive eyes or is wearing contact lenses. Offer a contact lens case and solution if the guest would like to remove lenses before the treatment.• Place a small amount of Aveda eye makeup remover along one side of

a pre-moistened cotton eye pad.• If the guest is wearing waterproof mascara, add a drop of Aveda

Beautifying Composition onto the pad.• Invite the guest to look upward while you gently slide the prepared

cotton pad under the right eye, product side up underneath the lash line.• Invite the guest to close their eyes and keep them closed during

this process.• Using another pre-moistened cotton pad, add a small amount of Aveda

eye makeup remover and Aveda Beautifying Composition, if applicable.• Anchor the pad underneath the right eye with thumb and middle finger.• Use the cotton pad to saturate the lash line with the removal product,

pause for a moment if they are wearing a non-Aveda mascara to assist in a more effective removal of mascara.

• Use gentle downward sweeping motions along the lash line. Do not rub side to side, as this may force product into the guest’s eyes.

• Remove makeup from the eyelids using a gentle outward motion and from the brow bone with a back and forth motion.

• Fold the bottom edge of pad underneath the guests eye, up and over the lashes, gently slide the pad outward toward the perimeter for removal.

• Use a clean, cotton pad pre-moistened with water to remove any final traces of eye makeup or remover.

• Dispose all soiled cotton pads after use.

aveda cleansing techniques

The purpose of cleansing the skin of the face, neck and décolleté is to remove makeup, surface dirt, oil, debris and other impurities. An effective cleansing procedure will prepare the skin for a complete and thorough skin analysis followed by a series of corrective skin treatments. It is important to thoroughly cleanse the skin without the possibilities of any over-stimulation especially during this process of the facial treatment. All cleansers to some degree or another create activity on the surface of the skin. To prevent any possible over-stimulation of the skin, we recommend a pre-cleansing application using an Aveda Composition. The purpose of the pre-cleanse technique is to:

• Allow the skin to slowly adjust to the activity of the cleanser.• More effectively remove a heavy makeup application.• Protect and nourish the skin during the cleansing process.

The jojoba oil base in the Aveda Compositions will begin to effectively break down makeup, surface dirt, oil, debris and other impurities on the skin in a gentle, non-stimulating way, allowing for maximum makeup removal.

The Aveda pre-cleanse technique is an effective technique and may be performed on all guests for maximum makeup removal. In particular, it is recommended for those guests who are currently using non-Aveda skin care products. Often times the guest may be using products made with synthetic aromas and other artificial ingredients which may cause a sensitive or sensitized skin state to occur. Aveda skin care products are effective, results orientated formulations designed to assist the skin in establishing and maintaining its natural integrity through the recovery and treatment of various skin conditions. It is important to approach the Aveda skin care product selection and customized treatment design keeping this in mind so an effective result can be achieved, especially for the first time guest who has not been exposed to using Aveda skin care products before. The concept of using an Aveda Composition prior to the application of another more “active” Aveda skin care product may also be effectively used prior to refinement when there might be a concern to minimize skin sensitivity and over-stimulation. It is an extremely beneficial technique to use whenever treating a guest with sensitive or sensitized skin no matter what the cause.

procedure:

aveda pre-cleansing application

• Select the appropriate Aveda Composition based upon the guest’s elemental nature.

• Use the palms of your hands to moisten the skin of the décolleté, neck and face by gently pressing warm water onto the skin. The water hydrates the skin and allows for an even application of the Aveda Composition.

• Dispense the appropriate amount of Aveda Composition to the palms of your hands and apply it to the skin of the décolleté, neck and face with light effleurage movements.

• Proceed with the Aveda cleansing application procedure.

aveda cleanser application

• Select the appropriate Aveda cleanser based upon the guest’s elemental nature.• If you have not chosen to pre-cleanse the skin, use the palms of your hands

to moisten the skin of the décolleté, neck and face by gently pressing warm water onto the skin, allowing for an even application of the Aveda cleanser.

• Dispense the appropriate amount of the Aveda cleanser onto the palm of your left hand. Be mindful that the amount of Aveda cleanser and the method of application may vary slightly depending on the specific Aveda cleanser being used.

• Using the pads of the fingertips of your right hand, remove a small amount of the Aveda cleanser from the left hand and begin to apply the cleanser with a light sweeping movement covering the entire décolleté area, beginning at the right axillary area and moving across the center to the left axillary area. Make sure to apply enough cleanser to each area to adequately cover the entire décolleté.

• Transition to the left side of the neck area, applying more cleanser with a light sweeping movement across the entire length and width of the neck.

• Beginning at the center of the chin, apply more cleanser in an outward and upward sweeping motion to the left and then the right sides of the jaw area.

• Continue to apply the cleanser to the cheek area, using an upward and outward gentle sweeping movement beginning at the right cheek area and then the left side of the cheek area.

• Continue to apply the cleanser up along both sides of the nose and onto the forehead.

• Finish your application of cleanser on the forehead area with a light sweeping movement.

• Evenly distribute the remaining cleanser to the palms of both hands and transition your hands to the resting position on the décolleté where you will begin the Aveda Cleansing Manipulations.

aveda cleansing manipulations

The Aveda cleansing manipulations are designed to effectively spread the Aveda cleanser while breaking down and removing makeup, surface dirt, oil, debris and other impurities from the skin. Light effleurage movements are used to prevent any over-stimulation of the cleanser on the skin. To ensure this important aspect of the procedure avoid any pressure that would move the skin more than is necessary to properly manipulate the cleanser over the surface of the skin. For a thorough and effective cleansing process, each movement may be repeated as many times as is necessary to properly cleanse the skin. A minimum of three repetitions of each movement is best.

1. décolleté circles• Position the palms of the hands flat, at a slight angle, at the center of

the décolleté forming the shape of a “triangle” with the thumbs resting lightly in the hollow of the clavicle and the index fingers lightly touching.

• Effleurage across the décolleté from the midline out to the corners of the shoulders, pivot the hands slightly gliding back to the midline along the little finger side of the hand, following the hollow of the clavicle returning to the beginning position.

• This fluid movement creates two large oval circles that will adequately cover the entire décolleté area.

commonly asked questions

1. What is the purpose of cleansing the skin and why is it important? The purpose of cleansing the skin of the face, neck and décolleté is to remove makeup, surface dirt, oil, debris and other impurities. An effective cleansing procedure will prepare the skin for a complete and thorough skin analysis followed by a series of corrective skin treatments. It is the first process in a facial procedure preparing the skin for all other skin care treatments.

2. What is the purpose of an Aveda pre-cleanse technique? The Aveda pre-cleanse technique is an effective technique and may be performed on all guests for maximum makeup removal. In particular, it is recommended for those guests who are currently using non-Aveda skin care products. It is an extremely beneficial technique to use whenever treating a guest with sensitive or sensitized skin no matter what the cause.

aromatic steam towel

Aromatic steam towels are used on the face when the skin is not overly sensitive. Aromatic steam towels: • Soften Skin • Open follicles • Soften dead surface skin cells, making refinement easier • Increase circulation to the skin tissue, bringing more oxygen to the tissue • Feel soothing and relaxing to the guest • Are customized with the guests aroma preference • Are an Essential Aveda Spa Ritual in every Aveda facial treatment

• Dispense 15 to 20 drops of the guest’s chosen Aveda aroma into a basin of warm water; the amount will vary depending on the Aveda aroma collection you are using and the number of towels you are preparing. Make sure the aroma is completely dispersed throughout the water before submerging the towels.

• Completely submerge a folded towel into the aromatic water until it is completely absorbed with water and aroma.

• Begin rolling the towel on the side of the basin to remove excess water.• Continue squeezing and rolling until you have rolled the entire towel.• Squeeze once more to remove any excess water.• Continue to repeat this process until you have enough towels to fill the

hot towel warmer or with as many towels as the treatment requires.• Fill the hot towel warmer with all the prepared towels; check to make sure

the warmer is set at the correct temperature.

aveda aromatic steam towel preparation technique option 2• Dispense several drops of the guest’s chosen aroma directly onto a

pre-moistened warm towel prior to application. The area of the towel that will rest underneath the guest’s nose is the most effective location for the aromatic drops.

1. Position both hands under the aromatic steam towel leaving your thumbs exposed, begin at the midline of the forehead.

2. Use a light pressure while moving bilaterally across the forehead toward the temples until the entire forehead is complete.

3. Transition your thumbs underneath the aromatic steam towel for a more effective use of the towel as you continue the bilateral movements progressing down the rest of the face using a clean part of the towel as you transition to another area, complete along the jaw line behind the earlobes.

4. Drape the aromatic steam towel over the décolleté, transition your hands to the resting position and perform several firm stationary circular movements.

5. Pivot your hands to the axillary regions and perform several circular movements, follow with a shoulder press.

6. Grasp the towel with your left hand and firmly secure the folded edge of the aromatic steam towel between your right index and middle fingers.

7. Using the palms of your hands, perform circular movements across the décolleté moving from right to left, wipe around the left shoulder and end behind the left ear.

8. Loosely twist the towel and continue focused on the base of the neck sliding upward underneath the jaw line, progressing from the left side of the neck to the right.

9. Complete the Aveda aromatic steam towel removal procedure by cleansing around the right shoulder, ending behind the ear.

It is important as an esthetician to become familiar with other methods of skin care product removal. The use of removing product with pre-moistened cotton mitts is a very effective approach when a towel removal technique is not appropriate or needed. When the skin is showing signs of sensitivity or if you need to remove any excess refinement or treatment masque, the use of cotton compress removal technique is most effective and efficient. As part of your treatment preparation, it is best to prepare several 4 x 4 pre-moistened cotton compresses made with water, squeeze out the excess moisture and place them loosely rolled in a separate bowl. Prepare as many compresses as you think you will use during a facial service. They can be covered with a moistened cloth to keep them moist throughout the service. Make sure to remove any excess moisture before using them on the skin to prevent any dripping on the guest. It is important to prepare mitts for both of the hands in order to perform the removal technique correctly. You may use several compresses for this removal technique depending on how much product you need to remove from the skin.

pre-moistened cotton compress preparation• Immerse several 4 x 4 cotton compresses into a bowl of water. The

temperature of water is determined by the guest’s elemental nature and the appearance of the skin at the time of use.

• Remove the cotton compresses from the water, squeezing out the excess moisture and leaving enough in to make them effective in removing product from the skin.

• Separate the cotton compresses and loosely roll them one at a time, placing them in a dry, sanitized bowl.

• Cover with a moist cloth to maintain the moisture level during the length of the treatment.

mitt preparation• Lay one pre-moistened cotton compress lengthwise across the palm of

one hand, tuck the top of the compress over the index finger securing it with the middle finger.

• Tuck the bottom end of the compress between the ring and little finger.• Turn the hand over and tuck the loose ends under the middle finger.• Repeat the same method by making a mitt for the other hand.

procedure:1. Position both hands at the center of the décolleté and begin to gently

sweep bilaterally across the décolleté out toward the axillary area, reposition the compresses to a superior area on the center of the décolleté and continue the bilateral movement until all product has been effectively removed from the entire décolleté region.

2. Transition both hands to the base of the neck, use an alternating, upward hand over hand movement from the base of the neck up under the jaw line, cover the entire length and width of the neck including the area in back of the ears.

3. Progress upward to the face by sweeping from the midline of the chin toward the earlobes along the jaw line, continue to progress up the face from the midline sweeping outward until the product has been removed from the entire facial area.

4. Finish by pausing at the temples.

Sometimes it is better to wipe the toner across the skin on a cotton compress instead of spraying and blotting. For example, when you want to make sure all of the previous product (such as a cleanser) is removed from the skin. This method is also easy for guests to duplicate at home with a cotton ball.

1. Dampen two cotton compresses with Aveda toner.

2. Create two cotton compress “mitts” by folding the compress into thirds. • Lay the cotton compress over the palm of the hand and tuck one end

over the index finger.• Secure it with the middle finger.• Wrap the other end of the compress between the little and ring fingers.• Secure the loose end underneath the middle finger.• Any excess compress that extends over the fingers can be tucked

underneath the middle finger.

3. With “mitts” in both hands, lightly sweep bilaterally across the face, neck, and décolleté.

commonly asked questions

1. What does toner do for the skin? The purpose of toner during the Aveda facial treatments is to hydrate the skin and to better prepare it for accepting moisturizer.

2. I have two options for applying toner to the guest’s skin, the spray method and the cotton-compress method. How do I know which one to use?The spray method is best when you want to transfer the most hydration to the skin tissue. Use the compress method when you want to make sure you have removed all the active ingredients from previously used products.

3. Which toners work best with each Elemental Nature? The Aveda Skin Firming Toning agent goes with Infinity and Air natures; the Aveda All-Sensitive Toner works best for Fire natures; and the Aveda Toning Mist works best for Water and Earth natures.

4. How do I create the “mitt” that I use to apply toner?Create two cotton compress “mitts” by folding the compress into thirds, lay the cotton compress over the palm of the hand and tuck one end over the index finger and secure it with the middle finger. Wrap the other end of the compress between the little and ring fingers, secure the loose end underneath the middle finger. Any excess compress that extends over the fingers can be tucked underneath the middle finger.

5. When should I tone the skin? You should tone the skin after cleansing, exfoliating, applying the treatment masque, or whenever hydration is necessary. Pay particular attention to toning for Infinity and Air Nature skin states.
