It is surrounded on three sides by bodies of water. To the north is China, the world’s most populous country. Japan, another populous East Asian country, is located to the southeast. The Korean Peninsula is divided into two small and compact countries. North Korea occupies the northern half of the peninsula, while South Korea is located on the southern half. North Korea is slightly larger than South Korea—46,609 square miles to 38,022 square miles. But South Korea’s population is greater, about 47 million people to around 21 million in North Korea. Both countries are mainly mountainous. The map below shows the location of the Korean Peninsula in East Asia and its physical relationship to its neighbors, China and Japan.
