thed escription “ People with clear, written goals, accomplish far

more in a shorter period of time than peoplewithout them could ever imagine.”  Brian Tracy

hen I was growing up I was an avid schoolboy footballer.

I remember vividly my very first pair of Kenny

Dalglish Silver football boots made by Puma.

I loved those boots which gave me such confidence on thefield .

What I loved even more, though, was the thrill of hitting the back of the net.

The exhilaration. The roar of the crowd. The feeling of elation.

I must admit I still have that feeling whenever I hit a majortarget in my life.

I guess I am just very results driven, a source of muchdiscussion between Judy and I.

So how do we hit those targets? How do we score those goals?

 We simply have toG.R.O.W.

for it!

However, it has to be theright goal; a goal which isaligned with not just your

head but your heart.

SMART goals are greatbut they can be WRONG!

G. is for my Goals

‘  Are they SMART but wrong? ’

I agree completely with Einstein’s quote linking a happy life with a goal as opposed to people or things.

However, it has to be the right goal; a goal which is aligned with not just your head but your heart.

Think for a minute.

How many people do you know who expended a lot of energy

getting to the top of the corporate ladder only to realise that itlacks the fulfilment andpersonal satisfactionthat it promised.

SMART goals can  be great but they

can also be wrong if they are not aligned  with exactly what youdesire.

So, make sure that your goals are the right ones, completely

aligned with who you are and what you really desire.

 R. is for my Relationships

‘  Are we growing in the same direction? ’

I think John Paul Getty must have been on to something whenhe concluded that:

‘ I'd rather have 1% of the effort of 100 men than 100% of myown effort ’

Of course you can buy otherpeople’s help but they

won’t be fully committed untilthey want to follow

you on a journey  because they believe

in you not becausethey believe you will pay.

And this highlights the importance of relationships.

It is through relationships that we connect with people andcapture a place in their hearts. It is here they allow us the timeand space to insert an idea into their minds by painting apicture of a better future.

It is only then that they will truly o pen their hands to help.

…lots of opportunities.

If there aren't, you make them

If you know where tolook, you will always see

opportunities!

O. is for my Opportunities

‘  Am I making the most of them ?’

In 1985 UK pop band The Pet Shop Boys, released a songcalled Opportunities (Let’s make lots of Money ). There is apart of the song which went like this:

Oh, there's a lot of opportunities

If you know when to take them, you know?

There's a lot of opportunities If there aren't, you can make them Make or break them

The song, written as a satire of the mood of the eighties

where it was all about making money,  was a bit of a ‘send up’

of ‘ yuppie’ culture andconspicuousconsumption.

Even though timeshave changed

opportunities still exist.

Today at the start of the ‘teenies’ (not sure if that’s what it’scalled ), with austerity being the name of the game, there arestill plenty of opportunities.

If y ou know where to look, you will always see opportunities!

Just ask Mr Proctor and Mr Gamble, , Mr ‘IBM’ or Mr ‘FedEx’or at least their current shareholders. These companies were

all started in economic downturns.

…there must be forethought, system, planning, intelligence, and honest purpose, as well

as perspiration.

„The only place you will

find success before work is in the dictionary!‟

W . is for my  Work

‘Am I doing what’s required?’

Vince Lombardi, an American Football coach famously saidthis; ‘T he only place success comes before work is in the

dictionary!’

  We need to work

at our goals and

  be focused onour growth.

However, just working hard may not be

enough. Thomas Edison gave us this insight:

‘  Being busy does not always mean real work. The object of all work is production or accomplishment and to either of these

ends there must be forethought, system, planning, intelligence, and honest purpose, as well as perspiration. Seeming to do is not doing. ’

In other words we need to work SMART. But as mentionedearlier, we also need to work RIGHT (from the heart).

– Achieved his goal

f you have ever been to the cinema, listened to LP’s in

their heyday or come home after a long day and flicked

your light switch, then you have Thomas Edison to thank

for those experiences.

Thomas Edison was known as an inventor, a scientist and a

business man who is credited as being the father of the

Research Laboratory Industry. He revolutionized the way

scientific research was done by industrializing the process.

In fact, at the time of his death in 1931, he had over 1,000

inventions credited to him.

Edison’s focus on a goal seems to have been legendary.

The mostcommon story

that exists

about him is

that it was on

his 100th attempt

that the light bulb

 worked.

„If I find 10,000 wayssomething won't work, Ihaven't failed. I am notdiscouraged, because everywrong attempt discarded isanother step forward.‟

I don’t know how true this is but it does not seem that

inconceivable.

In Edison’s own words:

‘  If I find 10,000 w ays something won't work, I haven't failed.

I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt

discarded is another step forward.’

Edison was truly a great example of growing for goals.

He was clear about the goal at hand. He inspired and

motivated others to help towards it. He wasn’t afraid to seize

the opportunity and certainly was not afraid to work hard to

see his goal achieved.

  Are you like ‘Growing’ Thomas or that other Thomas;

‘Doubting’ Thomas?
