TEACHER NOTES:

After reading the objectives and going over the learning activities sheet, have the students turn to the Anticipation guide.

Read through the directions:

BEFORE READING -This is a side view of the offset press. Try to label the 6 parts of the offset press system. Think of what each part

AFTER THE READING -This is a side view of the offset press. Try to label the 6 parts of the offset press system and write down what they do.

They have the rest of the period to finish the Anticipation guide, it is due today.

After they are finished they can work on the Ch. 20 vocabulary or their projects.

After reading Ch. 20, answer the following questions:

1. What is a sheetfed offset press? is an offset press designed to print a single sheet of

paper at a time.

2. What is a webfed offset press? is a press that prints with one long continuous web

of paper fed from a roll.

3. What is a perfecting offset press? is a press that prints on bothe sides of the paper

at the same time.

4. Look at the teachers examples, can you see a difference between sheetfed, webfed, and

perfecting? It doesn’t seem like they are that different.

5. What is the purpose of the dampening (fountain) solution? The dampening unit moistens

the nonimage areas of the plate with fountain solution so ink does not ad-

here to them.

6. How does the Dampening Unit work? The fountain roller transfers a thin film of

fountain solution either to the ductor roller or directly to the form rollers. If a

ductor roller is used it transfers the solution to a distributing roller and onto

the form roller.

7. What is in the Dampening (fountain) solution? water is the main ingredient and a small

amount of concentrated acid.

8. According to the book, figure out the correct ratio of concentrated acid to water: 1 or 2 part

concentrated acid to 15 parts water.

9. If our fountain solution needs 12 ounces of solution per gallon of water, how many ounces of water

do I need? 128

Therefore my ration is: 12: 128 ounces

Now reduce it to its lowest terms: 3 : 32

10. Describe the use of pH strips and conductivity meters to monitor dampening solutions to

maintain print quality? Printing quality and press performance depend on the

proper mixture of ingredients, therefore a pH strip helps monitor the acidity

in the fountain solution.

antisetoff spray: a powder made from fine starch particles sprayed on the surface of printed sheets to prevent setoff.

gripper: a metal tab or clip located on an impression cylinder, a transfer cylinder, or an-other device of the feeding system that grabs a sheet of paper and feeds it through the printing press.

double sheet detector: a printing press device used to detect when multiple sheets of paper are bing fed at the same time.

jogging: the squaring and aligning of sheets before loading onto the feed table or in the de-livery pile.

feedboard: a conveyor platform that uses a set of rollers, balls, or brushes to peress the sheet to the front guides at the head of the platform.

night latch: a handle provided for lowering the rollers against the plate and lifting them out of contact with the plate.

ductor roller: the first roller in the inking system that comes in alternate contact with the fountain roller and the firs oscillator. The roller is the roller in a dampening system that transfers the solution to a distributing roller.

sheet separator: a springy steel finger extend-ing over the lead edge of the pile of paper in the feeder.

fountain keys: screws on a conventional ink-ing system used to regulate the ink at the ink fountain.

skeleton wheel: an adjustable disk on the de-livery cylinder that holds the sheet as it travels. The disk is a paper-guide wheel.

TEACHER NOTES:

I usually have the students take the pretest on a Thursday.

Unfortunately, review game zone only offers to keep track of the students scores if you pay for it. So if you want to just walk around and observe who is doing well and who isn’t. I just write down a list of students that need to do more to understand the material.

Then on Friday, the students that needed more I have them fill out the study guide while watching the video presentation on the chapter.

The students that need enrichment get to play a game to earn candy.

Directions: Using the book, read Chapter 20 and answer the questions below.

Know your vocabulary terms.

Know how to read a job ticket.

What are the three cylinders used on an offset press? know the definition for each. PLATE - the part of an offset press holding the printing plate. BLANKET - the part of an offset press holding the rubber blanket that accepts images from the plate. IMPRESSION - the part of an offset press carrying the stock through the printing unit and forcing it against the inked blanket, where the image is transferred to the stock.

What is the difference between a sheetfed, webfed, and perfecting presses? sheetfed press: an offset press designed to print a single sheet of paper at a time.

webfed press: a press that prints with one long continuous web of paper fed from a roll.

Perfecting press: is a press that prints on bothe sides of the paper at the same time.

What are the six main operating systems of an offset press? know the definition for each.

Feeding Unit: the system on a press that transfers the paper or other substrate from a stack or roll to the registration unit.

Register Board: a platform that accepts a sheet from the feeder unit and inserts in in register, ready for printing.

Printing Unit: the part of the printing press where printing takes place. This unit contains the plate cylinder, blanket cylinder, and impression cylinder.

Dampening Unit: a press system that moistens the nonimage areas of the plate with fountain solution so ink does not adhere to them.

Inking Unit: the portion of the press consisting of the ink fountain and rollers that control the feeding of the ink.

Delivery Unit: a system on offset presses and duplicators that delivers the printed

Why is maintaining the correct pH balance in fountain solution important? Printing quality and press performance depend on the proper mixture of ingredients, therefore a pH strip helps monitor the acidity in the fountain solution.

What is the ratio for water to fountain solution, if it is 12 ounces solution per 1 gallon water. (hint: convert gallons to ounces, then reduce to the lowest terms) 12:128 = 3:32
